Liberty!

Tom, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a. confirm (or refute) 3-5
b. add yer own, i know there's more

mark s, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Warlocks (early name for the VU and the Grateful Dead plus countless others) 2. Fuel (seriously, how many bands named Fuel are there?) 3. All those bands that had to rename themselves (Dinosaur (Jr.), Wham (! UK), Charlatans (UK), The (Fucking) Champs, etc.

the case with Amon Duul should be excepted due to common members in all incarnations.

Andy K, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also, can someone explain to me the formatting issues on ILM?

ie, do you need to manually insert a <br> between all multiple list entries?

kthanxbye.

gygax!, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Destroy All Monsters

gygax!, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beat (2: one therefore renamed in US the English Beat)

Amon Düül get in cuz they made me think of the thread!

I guess there's also several cases where bands have split acrimoniously and difft members have toured as the "true" version, sometimes simultanously: eg Buck's Fizz

mark s, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(treat as HTML, gygax) (so yeah)

One of the New Orders is a The New Order, no?

mark s, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you're right about the the there, mark s.

Andy K, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mina Stars Moose Hood

I only know what AMG and Audiogalaxy searches tell me.

Curt, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After downloading some crappy dance track, I have a feeling there's more then one Eyeless in Gaza.

bnw, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously though...

  • Charlatans
  • Locust
  • The Frogs
  • Supercollider (see this thread)
  • Suede
  • Basehead
  • T Tauri
  • Godz
  • Felt
  • Giant Sand

The more interesting question is: who here proudly owns records by two different bands with the same name? (Amon Duul excepted)

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have albums by two different bands named Couch. They couldn't be more different, I don't think.

doug, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and forgot.... THE CHAMPS.

I should qualify some of these (as most of the same-name couples are separated by the Atlantic):

Charlatans and Suede have some stateside counterpart that's enforcing the copyright though long gone from any sign of public awareness...shrug

Basehead: same thing.. though change "stateside" to "UK".

Locust in the UK is the trip hop act/solo guy. Locust were the infernal 30-second noise rock group from San Diego. Locust UK's lawyers sent some nasty legal jargon to San Diego Locust, and thus the latter grudgingly changed their name to The Locust.

The Frogs, unfortunately, aren't necessarily our favorite sick and twisted due from Minneapolis.. but are also a Pennsylvania rock band that refuses to acknowledge the existence of the former... or their ways, mind U.

Supercollider: click the link above.

T Tauri... techno act.. and screamy Unwoundish rock band from Los Angeles.

Godz.. beer soaked Harley riding metal guys... and dissonant rock geniuses from New York.

Felt and Giant Sand both have unknown Orange County, CA bands with the same name.

Champs: "Tequila" performers... and mathemetallic types from Santa Cruz and Olympia.. (now the Fucking Champs)

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Back Street Boys was originally the name of (one of) Wayne/Jane County's bands.

Dave225, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I assume Air sticks "French Band" on stuff for reasons other than a mark of musical quality.

Curt, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, my poor html reality discounted both mentions of the fucking c4am95 and the charlatans.

i have two seperate LPs by couch (the galen-esque and the neokraut Kitty Yo-yos), Locust and The Locust (actually on my blog about 2 months ago, I had a Locust vs. The Locust battle royale)...

isn't there 2 bands named Sunroof... forcing the VHFers to go by Sunroof!?

if Amon Duul counts how about NEU! vs. La NEU!?

there were at least two Dr. Dre's in 80s hip-hop....

how many hardcore bands name Youth Brigade were there?

http://gygax.pitas.com, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There were two acts called Organized Rhyme, one a respected hip hop group from the US, and the other a really stupid Canadian group featuring...wait for it...TOM GREEN.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chemical Brothers were originally known as the Dust Brothers, until the real Dust Brothers heard about them and sked them ever so nicely to stop using their name. Apparently it was a homage and they didn't think they mind, like these guys have degrees and stuff...

Billy Dods, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's the soul-punk The Deadly Snakes and the philly hip hop Deadly Snakes (no "The").

fritz, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Douglas, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Check the OR, You like it so far? Check the OR, you love the OR. It's kind of catchy, I am forced to admit.

There were two bands named Bush weren't there? Necessitating the popular one to be known as Bush X in some countries?

static, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Crickets, Shadows, Supremes, Marquees. There are loads of familiar names attached to unknown regional acts, especially before national radio dominated in America. Early rock 'n' roll, doo-wop and that era are fertile grounds for this.

There was a reggae Donovan as well as the Dylan-for-idiots version. And has anyone mentioned The Beat?

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the monks (german vietnam vets/nice legs shame about her face). also, weren't the orb using the name orbital for remixes for a period?

James Annett, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Catherine Wheel

1) The Tampa Fla. band 2) The ones with the funny accents

Brian Gallagher, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One Basehead was in Maryland, whose the other?
Their is a rapper named Hurricane, I think a band named that and Hurricane #1 to go ontop of them all.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't there a couple Vagrants?

Andy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got records by two different bands with the names Catherine Wheel and Tunic. There also appears to be at least four bands with the name Tugboat, much to my irritation.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Squeeze yet. Wasn't there a US band that made the Brits label their LPs Squeeze UK here? Also, the Murmers.

nickn, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the Bangles had to change their name from the Bangs.

nickn, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Paragons (rocksteady and doowop?)
Ray Charles and the Ray Charles Singers (no relation)

michael, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's Swans (Gira and chums) and The Swans, who looked like a Scandinavian Soft Metal group on the only alb I've seen by 'em.

And wasn't there another Sea Horses before John Squire's dismal bunch?

Andrew L, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hated Slack Ida Liquorice Fortunately for Dan Littleton, there was only one Three Shades of Dirty.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kaleidoscope and Placebo.

helenfordsdale, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen several of my own rejected band name ideas turn up later.. Oslo, Caffeine, Angels vs Aliens... is there no such thing as an original idea anymore?

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The actual Fleetwood Mac and the phantom Fleetwood Mac!

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can think of two different bands named (The?) Woodies, one from Tampa, one from San Francisco (I think). I know of two different bands named Anodyne, one from 1984 or 1983. And I think there were actually three different Nirvanas.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron Wood's first band The Birds were particularly unlucky at choosing a name. They were originally called The Thunderbirds, but were forced to change to The Birds when they found that Chris Farlowe's band was also called the The Thunderbirds. Then, of course, The Byrds broke and there was a fair amount of animosity and legal fur flying between the two. The fantastic final Birds single "Say Those Magic Words" was produced under the name Birds Birds.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Experimental Audio Research (weird sound folk) or Audio Research (scratch dj/hip hop collective/label in Mtl). EAR came first--I'd really, quite frankly, like them to stake the claim and have a fight with the djs. That'd be a sound clash to remember.

cybele, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

LeMonte Young's Dream Syndicate and Steve Wynn's Dream Syndicate

Curt, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmie Rodgers ("Honeycomb" and "Blue Yodels 1 thru 97")
Electric Eels (Cleveland and Brit)

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

LeMonte Young's Dream Syndicate and Steve Wynn's Dream Syndicate

La Monte never called it the Dream Syndicate. That was Tony Conrad and John Cale's pet name for the Theatre of Eternal Music, much to La Monte's chagrin. Hence Tony's first public music venture post-La Monte: Outside the Dream Syndicate, with Faust.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
