Amon Duul II's "Marcus Leid" RFI, C/D

So I was listening to an excellent Barbara Manning show today and she covered this song. I forgot how dazzlingly, awesomely classic it is. I always heard that there was a drastically different version of this band that lived in England ("Amon Duul UK"), and presumably put this out. I have it on a sketchy "Greatest Hits" type thing that has nothing from (at least) the first five albums (looking on the unofficial ADII site it seems this collection only has the UK stuff).

When was this put out? On what album? (aforementioned site has no tracklist) Do diehard ADII purists dismiss this slice of genius?

what's this thing? i don't know anything about the ii except i'm disappointed in the one album some record store dude got me to buy; but I don't have anything with "lemmings" in the title...

That's it! Thanks. Now I know what it was originally on.

This band wasn't "really" Amon Duul 2, they only had one member. By all accounts their output ain't worth much, but I love that one song.

If you do not have AD2's Yeti then trust me on that one. Get the new version on Repertoire, it's remastered with bonus tracks. Seriously, one of the best records from that era (see various ILM "best Krautrock" threads for more votes). For my money it beats the two lemming albums by a long shot.

It was John Weinzierl and Dave Anderson wasn't it? Two members!

Dissenting opinion: the best Amon Duul II is Live In London. Start there, then look for Yeti, Tanz Der Lemmings, Phallus Dei, etc.

I stand corrected re: Dave Anderson. And I must investigate this Live In London record, if I can find it...

But what about the SONG? Nobody's really mentioned it. "Marcus Leid" doesn't sound like any other ADII stuff, or, for that matter, virtually anything else I've ever heard. It's this weird pop-psych epic tune (9 min.) about Joan Of Arc, for chrissake! Somebody here must have heard it enough to give their opinion.

Anyway, I say CLASSIC! Search that shit out! But don't expect "Yeti".

And no, I can't YSI until this weekend ;)
