Checked the site this morning on a whim, found out it was presale day, found I actually have a citi card (which I didn't think I did), got tix, am insanely psyched, my partner even moreso -- she called it a once-in-a-liftime event, and I'm inclined to agree.

I hit up a friend with a citibank card and had them buy some for me. I have no idea where I'm seated. I am somewhat unreasonably obsessed with finding out.
the last live stevie wonder show i remember was a $200 ticket at The Apollo that i simply couldn't afford at the time. I heard that show ran four hours and was a knockout. I promised myself never again.

Yeah, it was annoying that his mic wasn't on multiple times, but he killed. "Superstition" was fucking transcendent.

how was it that they couldn't get the mics on for the female vocalists for the second half of "ordinary pain" FOR THE WHOLE SONG i mean come on
but the Sir Duke/I Wish doublepunch was very very very special to me and overall it absolutely delivered

agreed on all, mostly on the part about it being fucking great. technical crap aside, i thought stevie sounded amazing at the top of the show, then his voice flagged noticeably over the last few songs of the opening set (not sure he sang any of "pastime paradise" in the same key as the band), and then he came back full force for album sides three and four.

highlights for me: "contusion" (amazing fucking guitars), "village ghetto land" and "knocks me off my feet.

i liked india.arie but did she really need to hold a lyric sheet in her hand for the two verses of "have a talk with god" that she sang?

yeah this show was fucking amazing

stevie crying during "summer soft" and "joy inside my tears" was very contagious crying

Nailed it. This was a lot closer to my experience of the show than Pareles' Times review.

OTM! I was there, it was phenomenal. I don't think I've ever seen someone with such a presence; like I actually teared up when he first took the stage. And his band just destroyed! So good. Maybe this will convince him to tour the U.S. more often!

Yes to all of that. I don't like "Love's in Need..." much at all, and yet I was shuddering in my seat.

I've always been more of a Talking Book and Innervisions guy, but last night, performed live, every song on that record hit home for me. What the heck was that instrument he played during "I Am Singing"? That was one of the best solos I've ever heard. The only way the night could have been better is if he hopped on the kit for a song.

Yeah, Songs might be my least-favorite of his peak-era records, but I found myself freaking out to songs I didn't think I liked ("Contusion," for one).

I don't know what that instrument is either, and frustratingly, among the technical glitches at the NY show was that it was inaudible for the first half of the solo. But as soon as the audience could hear it, people were paying rapt attention in a way that I've never experienced before in an arena-sized crowd.

Apparently it is called a harpejji, and yeah that solo was unbelieveable.

I really wanted to include that in my review and I couldn't figure out what it was!

i got tickets for the oakland show and i'm hoping for an amazing finish to the tour (last show) and that all the bugs are ironed out by then. absolutely cannot wait.

saw him do this show back in 2015 and it was the greatest concert of my life

seconded. i used to think SITKOL (slightly) lesser than the run of LPs that preceded it, but as the years wear on it becomes my favourite to play - there's just something so joyful and ecstatic and abundantly emotional about the second LP.

I don't get the presale option. How does that work? Do you need to get a member or something? (I don't go to big venue shows anymore so I've not done it before)

presale codes are pretty common in any size venue you usually get in an email if you are on a mailing list for the artist or venue or you have a certain credit card or whatever.

Looks like you have to be a live nation subscriber...

I was googling for presales and usually can find them (you just enter a code usually) but not seeing the tradional ones for Stevie Wonder shows in the US. I am seeing folks in Europe grumbling that the presale tickets for there went quickly

(The 2024 tour covered all the classic albums which was great. Innervisions is still my favorite, but that's splitting hairs, Talking Book-to-SITKOL is up there with any of the greatest four album runs.)

Managed to get two tickets for London, despite Ticketmaster and the O2 websites both crashing/kicking me out multiple times and accusing me of being a bot because I kept trying to buy tickets. Only been to one arena type show before (Leonard Cohen on his Old Ideas tour in 2012), not exactly how I’d choose to see any artist but I’m buzzing tbh.

don't know if Stevie's an equal to Dolly's social justice work or charitable works. I do know I don't think there's an artist whose discography compares to his.

Stevie has done lots of social justice work in his time. MLK holiday efforts, civil rights involvement. Maybe he’s not doling out money and books like Dolly but pretty sure he’s made some donations.

He’s made a career of philanthropy, too: working on AIDS awareness, anti-apartheid efforts, and fundraising for blind children and children with disabilities

Same here. It was so easy to get 2024 tickets, NY or LA took their time to sell out but everywhere else never did - some venues were only half full.

He could add some shows but I think he needs a full day between shows to rest his voice.

They didn't advertise anything about the 2024 tour except that it was going to be called the "As We Fix Our Nation's Broken Heart" tour. But they played SEVEN songs from SITKL, including the four big hits. FWIW, I kind of wondered if Stevie Wonder's lower profile may have meant he was now overlooked (this was in 2024), but I guess I was wrong. Reading his press from the 1970s - see the features Christgau wrote, which are hosted on his website - he was probably the most discussed and covered recording artist of that era. It's just a surprise to see his output slow to a crawl after 1980.

i saw him at the apollo in '05 in support of the voting rights act for whatever it was, fifty bucks or so. i didn't know whether to mostly expect speeches or what, but he wound up giving us like 90 minutes or so. it was wonderful and a great memory and i'm glad i don't have to deal with this madness.
