Checked the site this morning on a whim, found out it was presale day, found I actually have a citi card (which I didn't think I did), got tix, am insanely psyched, my partner even moreso -- she called it a once-in-a-liftime event, and I'm inclined to agree.

I hit up a friend with a citibank card and had them buy some for me. I have no idea where I'm seated. I am somewhat unreasonably obsessed with finding out.
the last live stevie wonder show i remember was a $200 ticket at The Apollo that i simply couldn't afford at the time. I heard that show ran four hours and was a knockout. I promised myself never again.

i have a few minor quibbles (the tech was regularly fucked up and it's clear that stevie himself hasn't done much rehearsal) but that was fucking great

Yeah, it was annoying that his mic wasn't on multiple times, but he killed. "Superstition" was fucking transcendent.

how was it that they couldn't get the mics on for the female vocalists for the second half of "ordinary pain" FOR THE WHOLE SONG i mean come on
but the Sir Duke/I Wish doublepunch was very very very special to me and overall it absolutely delivered

agreed on all, mostly on the part about it being fucking great. technical crap aside, i thought stevie sounded amazing at the top of the show, then his voice flagged noticeably over the last few songs of the opening set (not sure he sang any of "pastime paradise" in the same key as the band), and then he came back full force for album sides three and four.

highlights for me: "contusion" (amazing fucking guitars), "village ghetto land" and "knocks me off my feet.

i liked india.arie but did she really need to hold a lyric sheet in her hand for the two verses of "have a talk with god" that she sang?

yeah this show was fucking amazing

stevie crying during "summer soft" and "joy inside my tears" was very contagious crying

Nailed it. This was a lot closer to my experience of the show than Pareles' Times review.

Well, it's official. I'm going to cry every single time I listen to "Joy Inside My Tears" for the rest of my life.

OTM! I was there, it was phenomenal. I don't think I've ever seen someone with such a presence; like I actually teared up when he first took the stage. And his band just destroyed! So good. Maybe this will convince him to tour the U.S. more often!

Yes to all of that. I don't like "Love's in Need..." much at all, and yet I was shuddering in my seat.

I've always been more of a Talking Book and Innervisions guy, but last night, performed live, every song on that record hit home for me. What the heck was that instrument he played during "I Am Singing"? That was one of the best solos I've ever heard. The only way the night could have been better is if he hopped on the kit for a song.

Yeah, Songs might be my least-favorite of his peak-era records, but I found myself freaking out to songs I didn't think I liked ("Contusion," for one).

I don't know what that instrument is either, and frustratingly, among the technical glitches at the NY show was that it was inaudible for the first half of the solo. But as soon as the audience could hear it, people were paying rapt attention in a way that I've never experienced before in an arena-sized crowd.

Apparently it is called a harpejji, and yeah that solo was unbelieveable.

I really wanted to include that in my review and I couldn't figure out what it was!

i got tickets for the oakland show and i'm hoping for an amazing finish to the tour (last show) and that all the bugs are ironed out by then. absolutely cannot wait.

I like your chances. The medley that he's doing is a recent addition and they did a brief version of "Fever" last night.

Chicago set was predominately bug-free. A couple mic upcuts but on the order of seconds, not minutes (or whole songs).

yeah, not understanding how you can get tickets with just a citi code. you still need a citi card for the purchase. i can confirm because it happened to me for the oakland 'songs in the key of life tour' back in december. i ended up having to borrow a friend's citi card to complete the transaction.

friend of mine did sound at his Oakland show. I was jealous.

I did get the Citi code to work with a Visa payment last October, so ... ?

Fun show in Baltimore last night. Not as many guests as Nashville, just a string section from Baltimore and Frederick Yonnet, a harmonica playing neo-soul local. Stevie loves to talk and joke and frequently took breaks between songs to do so. Songs in the Key of Life material sounded great. Somewhere in the middle, Stevie switched over to a small mini lap steel looking thing though and did Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" with India.Arie joining him on vocals. Then he grinned and went into "Tequila" from that. Unusual but still entertaining. His backup vocalists (including Ethiopian-American singer Wayna) are great. More powerful than India.Arie.

He started about 8:35 pm, took a 20 minute break in the middle and finished about 11:45pm

If someone had asked me, "What songs would you least expect to hear at a Stevie Wonder concert?" "Tequila" and "Nashville Cats" would be #1 and #2, respectively.

More tour dates announced, plus he's been doing free gigs in some towns. Played for an hour in DC Monday morning

Can't wait til he tours all the other albums of the '70s.

He made a surprise last-minute tour announcement just a few days ago, and this is clearly aimed at boosting Harris into the Presidency, with ten dates almost entirely in swing states: Pittsburgh comes first on October 8th followed by New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Greensboro, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Grand Rapids.

It's very last minute - barely any build-up and only two weeks out - so I'm not sure how to gauge the fact that only NYC and Philly was cleaned out today (first day of sale) while everywhere else is at best half sold-out. Except for Detroit where the closest seats are mostly gone, you can pretty much get a pair of tickets in any section you want for these remaining dates, and prices aren't nearly as high as you'd think - you can sit at floor level pretty close to the stage for $150.

(Grand Rapids and to a lesser extent Minneapolis have most of the closest seats gone as well, but maybe half sold overall as well)

Gonna see him again in Baltimore. Saw him there once , and back in the 80s in DC.
