stevie wonder tour rumours

is this bullhooks or has anyone else heard about it?

piscesboy, Monday, 7 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I saw him in August at the Apollo Theater, where he did a couple of shows in support of renewing provisions of the Voting Rights Act. There was a full band, with backup singers and everything, and they were well-rehearsed, so a tour wouldn't be out of the question. If he does tour, go see him. He was his flighty self, but in full command of his talent.

I read listing as something about Stevie Wonder having tumours. That was pretty disconcerting.

richat (richat), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't suppose his new album is any good?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

He needs to tour. I would spare no expense to see him live.

Yeah, definitely gonna try to go, but shit, only one night in NYC? One in Boston? Dude could sell out a week in each city.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 11 September 2014 16:39 (eleven years ago)

Got my tickets! Very fucking hyped about this!

Anyone with a tip on codes/scoring tickets, wd love the help. I'm very new to this game.

And increasingly aware that waiting until they're open to the public will result in instant disappointment.

thanks, forks, for the reminder that these are on sale! just got mine!

eric h: find someone you know who has a citibank credit card. the first six digits of the credit card number is the presale password. (and once you get past that, it looks like you can pay with any card.)

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:29 (eleven years ago)

:-/

I figured it was such.

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:36 (eleven years ago)

Checked the site this morning on a whim, found out it was presale day, found I actually have a citi card (which I didn't think I did), got tix, am insanely psyched, my partner even moreso -- she called it a once-in-a-liftime event, and I'm inclined to agree.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:44 (eleven years ago)

I hit up a friend with a citibank card and had them buy some for me. I have no idea where I'm seated. I am somewhat unreasonably obsessed with finding out.
the last live stevie wonder show i remember was a $200 ticket at The Apollo that i simply couldn't afford at the time. I heard that show ran four hours and was a knockout. I promised myself never again.

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

I think there might be a Facebook code available tomorrow? (Which means in effect they are available to the public tomorrow?)

I really hate that I'm not going to be able to go without paying a scalper. This is exactly why I don't do concerts.

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 17:22 (eleven years ago)

A quick search of a citi bank card code will allow you to buy them today. I have my pair and I can't wait!

DavidLeeRoth, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 18:01 (eleven years ago)

Dug around and found a code. Presto! 2 tickets!

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 18:34 (eleven years ago)

Is it too much to ask that Stevie tours every album from Music of My Mind to Hotter than July? Also he has to play Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants!

DavidLeeRoth, Friday, 19 September 2014 14:08 (eleven years ago)

I'd even buy tickets to that one.

a guy named Christian White who represents the typical white Christian (Eric H.), Friday, 19 September 2014 14:36 (eleven years ago)

Even? Especially!

DavidLeeRoth, Friday, 19 September 2014 14:57 (eleven years ago)

I thought that.. them writers and their free tickets, hey ho.

one month passes...

i have a few minor quibbles (the tech was regularly fucked up and it's clear that stevie himself hasn't done much rehearsal) but that was fucking great

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 November 2014 05:37 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, it was annoying that his mic wasn't on multiple times, but he killed. "Superstition" was fucking transcendent.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 7 November 2014 05:43 (eleven years ago)

how was it that they couldn't get the mics on for the female vocalists for the second half of "ordinary pain" FOR THE WHOLE SONG i mean come on
but the Sir Duke/I Wish doublepunch was very very very special to me and overall it absolutely delivered

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 November 2014 05:45 (eleven years ago)

agreed on all, mostly on the part about it being fucking great. technical crap aside, i thought stevie sounded amazing at the top of the show, then his voice flagged noticeably over the last few songs of the opening set (not sure he sang any of "pastime paradise" in the same key as the band), and then he came back full force for album sides three and four.

highlights for me: "contusion" (amazing fucking guitars), "village ghetto land" and "knocks me off my feet.

i liked india.arie but did she really need to hold a lyric sheet in her hand for the two verses of "have a talk with god" that she sang?

fact checking cuz, Friday, 7 November 2014 06:53 (eleven years ago)

yeah this show was fucking amazing

Nailed it. This was a lot closer to my experience of the show than Pareles' Times review.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 7 November 2014 20:31 (eleven years ago)

Well, it's official. I'm going to cry every single time I listen to "Joy Inside My Tears" for the rest of my life.

Eric H., Sunday, 16 November 2014 05:54 (eleven years ago)

Was anybody else at the Philly show last night? The only way that show gets topped is if he tours Innervisions. DJ Tick Tick Boom!

DavidLeeRoth, Monday, 17 November 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

Couldn't make it to the local shows, alas. When was the last time Wonder toured?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:08 (eleven years ago)

I think he did a larger tour than this one in 2008.

DavidLeeRoth, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:24 (eleven years ago)

Want to say I saw him at Taste of Chicago that summer, me and 300,000 others.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:29 (eleven years ago)

DJ Tick Tick Boom!

OTM! I was there, it was phenomenal. I don't think I've ever seen someone with such a presence; like I actually teared up when he first took the stage. And his band just destroyed! So good. Maybe this will convince him to tour the U.S. more often!

cwkiii, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:42 (eleven years ago)

Yes to all of that. I don't like "Love's in Need..." much at all, and yet I was shuddering in my seat.

Eric H., Monday, 17 November 2014 15:45 (eleven years ago)

I've always been more of a Talking Book and Innervisions guy, but last night, performed live, every song on that record hit home for me. What the heck was that instrument he played during "I Am Singing"? That was one of the best solos I've ever heard. The only way the night could have been better is if he hopped on the kit for a song.

DavidLeeRoth, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:58 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, Songs might be my least-favorite of his peak-era records, but I found myself freaking out to songs I didn't think I liked ("Contusion," for one).

I don't know what that instrument is either, and frustratingly, among the technical glitches at the NY show was that it was inaudible for the first half of the solo. But as soon as the audience could hear it, people were paying rapt attention in a way that I've never experienced before in an arena-sized crowd.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:10 (eleven years ago)

Apparently it is called a harpejji, and yeah that solo was unbelieveable.

cwkiii, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:15 (eleven years ago)

I really wanted to include that in my review and I couldn't figure out what it was!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)

I bought a ticket.

i got tickets for the oakland show and i'm hoping for an amazing finish to the tour (last show) and that all the bugs are ironed out by then. absolutely cannot wait.

sweaty palms, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:32 (eleven years ago)

I like your chances. The medley that he's doing is a recent addition and they did a brief version of "Fever" last night.

DavidLeeRoth, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

xp yeah the bugs are pretty much ironed out.

cwkiii, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:46 (eleven years ago)

Chicago set was predominately bug-free. A couple mic upcuts but on the order of seconds, not minutes (or whole songs).

Not seeing the FB code for some reason?

I see it, [Key], but ticketmaster is requiring first 6 digits of a Citicard today

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 15:47 (eleven years ago)

I'll just take my chances with the FB key tomorrow morning.

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 15:50 (eleven years ago)

actual Citi Card might still be needed

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

yeah, not understanding how you can get tickets with just a citi code. you still need a citi card for the purchase. i can confirm because it happened to me for the oakland 'songs in the key of life tour' back in december. i ended up having to borrow a friend's citi card to complete the transaction.

sweaty palms, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:41 (eleven years ago)

friend of mine did sound at his Oakland show. I was jealous.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 9 April 2015 00:32 (ten years ago)

Fun show in Baltimore last night. Not as many guests as Nashville, just a string section from Baltimore and Frederick Yonnet, a harmonica playing neo-soul local. Stevie loves to talk and joke and frequently took breaks between songs to do so. Songs in the Key of Life material sounded great. Somewhere in the middle, Stevie switched over to a small mini lap steel looking thing though and did Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" with India.Arie joining him on vocals. Then he grinned and went into "Tequila" from that. Unusual but still entertaining. His backup vocalists (including Ethiopian-American singer Wayna) are great. More powerful than India.Arie.

curmudgeon, Friday, 10 April 2015 14:02 (ten years ago)

He started about 8:35 pm, took a 20 minute break in the middle and finished about 11:45pm

curmudgeon, Friday, 10 April 2015 14:04 (ten years ago)

If someone had asked me, "What songs would you least expect to hear at a Stevie Wonder concert?" "Tequila" and "Nashville Cats" would be #1 and #2, respectively.

Can't wait til he tours all the other albums of the '70s.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 16:50 (ten years ago)

nine years pass...

He made a surprise last-minute tour announcement just a few days ago, and this is clearly aimed at boosting Harris into the Presidency, with ten dates almost entirely in swing states: Pittsburgh comes first on October 8th followed by New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Greensboro, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Grand Rapids.

It's very last minute - barely any build-up and only two weeks out - so I'm not sure how to gauge the fact that only NYC and Philly was cleaned out today (first day of sale) while everywhere else is at best half sold-out. Except for Detroit where the closest seats are mostly gone, you can pretty much get a pair of tickets in any section you want for these remaining dates, and prices aren't nearly as high as you'd think - you can sit at floor level pretty close to the stage for $150.

birdistheword, Saturday, 21 September 2024 04:37 (one year ago)

(Grand Rapids and to a lesser extent Minneapolis have most of the closest seats gone as well, but maybe half sold overall as well)

birdistheword, Saturday, 21 September 2024 04:41 (one year ago)

Gonna see him again in Baltimore. Saw him there once , and back in the 80s in DC.
