Who covered the song Mad World in 2004?

Teresa Diane Perry, Monday, 7 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Clapping Song has been covered several times, but Belle Stars is the one that springs to mind.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Monday, 7 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Bob Seger
Miami Sound Machine
Gary Jules

Pia Zadora's "Clapping Song" cover is the most well-known over here, I think.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 7 November 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

The answer to the Rod Stewart question is Brentford (I think).

what, are you cheating at a pub quiz night?

gold buck teef (mookie wilson), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Also, nobody did "Mad World" in 2004. Alex Parks did it in 2003, and Michael Andrews/Gary Jules' version first appeared long before that.

Brentford F.C. indeed. Used to work 500 yards from the ground. Never saw Rod, though. (It was at least 30 years later...)

Huh, I thought it woulda been Celtic United - they're in his heart, they're in his soul, after all. But I'm one of those North American ignoramuses who refers to the sport as "soccer", so what do I know? ("Football" being a sport that I hate equally in both its Canadian AND American varieties.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

edward o, so wrong. so wrong. at least be right when you try to make fun of someone else. 'mad world': the snowdrops (with one ms pam berry), 7" single 2004 (matinee recordings, 029).

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Donie Darko was at least a couple years old by then, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but the single was a hit in the UK in 2004, which is what quiz compilers usually go for, innit?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

The Gary Jules Mad World was the 2003 Christmas number one, i.e. it was released the week before Christmas in 2003, after having been a radio staple for months previously. Never heard the one Dan Gr mentions, possibly obscurantism wins the day, apparently.

There also seems to have been a cheesy dance version released by Impact in 2004 which seems to have charted just inside the top... 150. Ho!

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Myonga, Rod sings: "You're Celtic, United". I've always assumed he's referring to two different football teams: (Glasgow) Celtic and (Manchester) United. I'm sure you could care less, but maybe this tidbit will come in useful one day.
