roommates

I'm the type of person who likes to have music playing in my room whenever I'm awake, but whenever my roommate is in the room he insists I use headphones. It's not because he doesn't like the music I like, but just that he never wants to hear music in the room. Is this reasonable? Music (esp. IDM/punk/etc.) is great when it's on speakers loudly filling the room, but now I don't get many chances to listen to music like this. Has anyone had bad experiences with roommates & music?

yes, in college my roomates (dirty hippies) wanted nothing to do with anything besides the Dead, Phish and all other jam bands. Really, its all they listened to when they smoked pot, which was all day long. Needless to say, i moved out, they flunked out.

My worst experience was with the friend of a roommate who thought she was a folk singer. Note I say 'thought.'

I went to a conservative christian college last year(Liberty if anyone knows the name), and my roommate was all about, for the lack of a better term, christian boy bands. He had the most ridiculous collection of 20-30 diffrent boy bands, including "Joy4Him," and "Eternal Praise." he wasn't too fond of me blasting Ween in the wee hours of the night. It didn't help that he went to bed at 9 every night either.

I had a roommate who only listened to the first side of US'2 War - and nothing else (until the Unforgettable Fire came out - then he only listened to the first side of it.) He couldn't stand what I listened to, even though it was pretty similar to U2 (for a novice, anyway.) But then, he didn't like side 2 of any U2 records, so he was pretty closed-minded.

I got a new roommate. It was a necessity.

I think, for convention's sake, if a roomie insists on silence, it's usually a good idea to observe it. Otherwise, it can end up being one of the those passive aggressive deathmatches. It's definitely reasonable--you can always play music when he's not there, right?

christian boy bands

Plus One is another nauseous example. Stumbled across paid programming for them once. Har.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

brock - when did your roomate come out to you?

Geoff the, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Play extreme stuff, like Atari Teenage Riot and Death Metal, then agree to compromise on whatever you really want to play. If it's those things, you're in trouble. If he likes those, try strange jazz or abstract techno. If Andy L's around, he'll have some recommendations in those areas. I know his roommate hears it (that's not me, in case it sounds that way), and Andy gets to hear lots of Kenickie in exchange. I think they're both happy.

I had a roommate when I was about 18 (we actually shared a room) who always liked to play a little Slayer or Venom as he was drifting off to sleep.. it bugged the shit out of me, but drowned out the Tears For Fears coming from another guy's room... God, my palms get sweaty just thinking back about it. Roommates suck.

Andy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My God! I used to share a house with someone who habitually began the day by playing Reef at ear-splitting volume. He didn't seem to grasp the hypocrisy when he tried to fight me for playing Blondie at miniscule levels, though.

Ben Squircle, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

likely that your neighbours love your roommate more than you.

keith, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarke's my roommate, and we spend all day arguing about music.

charlie va, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the worst is when your roommates start vamp'ing your record collection. One of my housemates had a really bad habit of playing the shit out of my records when I am not around. It was the sort of thing where he listened to my collection more than I did. He stopped doing it when he noticed I would be pissed when I walked in to find him playing my copy of Hand To Phone by Adult. This happened FIVE DAYS IN A ROW!!!

Now his new annoying habit is buying all the interesting bits of electronic music in my collection and then playing them to our friends. I guess it is cool that I turned him on to new music and that he is exposing people to it, but at the same time I wish he would find some records of his own.

I once had a roommate (1990) who thought Warrant was THE BAND OF ALL TIME! I cannot stress enough the emotional damage inflicted on my being. I swear if I ever again hear "Cherry Pie" I will find the nearest clock tower and take my revenge on the world.

When I discovered Merzbow, I played it to my roommate like "Hey listen to this!" and we shared a laugh. Later, he didn't think it was funny anymore. I think I was just mean.

Honda, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

brock - when did your roomate come out to you?

funny you should mention that. i transfered schools last semester, and as soon as i emailed ony of my dorm mates, he told me that my room mate had sexual harassment charges being pressed on him for touching some dude in the shower! egad.

Brock K, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Roommates??? Please grow up. Go get a 2nd job, sell pot or something if you can't stand having a roommate. This is just a ridiculous way to live.

B, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And how much money do you make, might I ask? Some people can't afford not to have a roommate even with a second job.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned's right. I'm lucky not to have one now, but most of the people here are writing about people imposed on them by the vagaries of university matching systems. My freshman year roommate was a massive Kate Bush fan, and I'm pretty sure she wound up hating the Smiths as much as I wound up hating Kate Bush. After that, my college had a pretty good idea about people needing personal space and so was not roomied up.

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned - Last year I made 1 million dollars on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". It's a great show on TV. Have you seen it? This really nice chap asks you easy questions about all sorts of silly things like, "Name one member of The Beatles? Isn't that great? and so easy. In ten questions, which I answered all correctly, I had so much money I couldn't believe it! Anyway, I think its really tops and you should try it. Ebay.com is also a really good way to make money with all your old records and stuff. Its amazing! So now I'm roommate free.

Nice try folks.

Smiths and Bush fans deserve each other btw: same apartment, different sides of room. Now you'all get off this internet thing-a-ma-jig and get back to work...

:)

B, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My roommate was really into Queen last year. He was also very into The Who, but only Tommy- the record and the movie- which soured me on them for a while, until I realized that they rocked and he just didn't overplay the good stuff. I'd rather not have a roommate, but whatever.

Todd Burns, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

B, you may have money and no roommates (and at a guess, no bedmates either), but YOU'RE STILL A PLEB. Now hie thee away back to Plebland.

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never really had any serious roomie problems, though I once lived in this huge communal house where a guest of one of the other residents played the Juliana Hatfield song from the Reality Bites soundtrack at earsplitting volume 50 times in a row at 3 in the morning while I was trying to sleep in the room just above. I'm in a house now, split into two apartments, and the neighbor downstairs has this bad habit of cranking the music at 1am on the weekends, though I've never really had much to complain about in terms of her taste...very middle-of-the-road stuff, but nothing that could be considered offensively banal.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And yes, the idea of living roommate-free is a very nice one indeed (when yer not partnered up with someone you want to spend all your time with that is), but financially speaking, it's not really a realistic proposition in this city unless you're really raking in the coin. Considering the things I do to earn my coin these days, that's not going to happen any time soon.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy, OH Suzy! SUZY!! - Turn down that Smiths CD and you WON'T HAVE TO SHOUT!!!

Kisses, Bob K (the guy downstairs, first door on right)

Bob, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was playing 'I'm Happy And I'm Singing...' by Jim O'Rourke the other evening, and my flatmate said it sounded like "Terry Riley with a short attention span" which I thought was a good one-liner, the bastard.

We are agreed on the merits of The Strokes and The Detroit Cobras. Everything else is up for grabs...
