Can some die-hard NP fans tell me what songs are Dan Bejar's on Electric Version and Mass Romantic? I'd like to re-evaluate New Pornographers (I don't really like them but LOVE Destroyer) and thought it might be best to ease myself in.

Thanks.

All tracks are attributed to New Pornographers, that I can tell. On allmsuic. Ok, thanks.

His voice is pretty distinct from Newman's. I'd assumed that he takes the lead vocal duties on the songs he wrote.

Jackie, Execution Day (my personal favorite NPs song and a strong contender for finest Bejar work period), Testament to Youth in Verse, Chump Change and Ballad of a Comeback Kid.

Missing anything, anyone who'd know? I'm pretty sure he's just got those two on Mass Romantic.

Mass Romantic: "Jackie," "To Wild Homes," "Execution Days."

Electric Version: "Chump Change," "Testament To Youth in Verse," "Ballad of a Comeback Kid."

is to wild homes bejar? it'd never really occurred to me before, but listening to it now, i guess the lyrics are a dead giveaway.

Sweet, I can make myself a New Pornographers CD that I actually like now!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

"To Wild Homes" is Bejar. And, on Mass Romantic, so is "Breakin' the Law," which originally appeared on the very first Destroyer album...

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Bejar's mannered voice and songs really irritate me. On Twin Cinemathe band made a step in the right direction by only using a couple, and sequencing them right. "Jackie Dressed in Cobras" for instance sounds great after "The Bleeding Heart Show."

I love the songs but I was so turned off by Bejar live - so disinterested and even smug. Having seen New Pornos play live several times before, I think I prefer when the drummer sings the Bejar songs.

I think "Jackie" is the grestest thing Bejar's ever done.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

"Jackie Dressed in Cobras" is the only song on Twin Cinema that made me take notice.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I think "Testament to youth in verse" (especially the ending) is the greatest thing Bejar's ever done. And they can fucking nail it live.

I didn't find Bejar to be disinterested or smug, just really really drunk.

The "bat out of hell" part of "Ballad of the Comeback Kid" was the pop moment of the year for whatever year that was.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Ballad of a Comeback Kid is the best song on Electric Version, by far.

Not to be a dick, but if you love Destroyer, you shouldn't have much of a problem recognizing Bejar's NP songs.

Nigel (Nigel), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

not to be a dick myself, nigel, but i think he's trying to do this the quickest way possible, without having to listen to all three records all the way through.

Dan Bejar is cool.

Carl Newman is the greatest pop/rock songwriter of the 21st century.

Just felt like the thread needed a little re-centering.

alpine static, Saturday, 6 April 2019 03:37 (seven years ago)

i'm not actually that invested in this issue, but maybe you should find a carl newman thread to 're-center'

mookieproof, Saturday, 6 April 2019 03:53 (seven years ago)

rather than one that is explicitly about dan bejar

mookieproof, Saturday, 6 April 2019 03:57 (seven years ago)

hey, I said Bejar is cool. he was/is in the New Pornographers, after all.

alpine static, Saturday, 6 April 2019 04:17 (seven years ago)

these are always my favorite new pornographers songs still
