does anyone know if all the subway sect's recordings from the original lineup for the unreleased album ever came out?

4 of them appear on 20 Odd Years (motion records), 'parallel lines' 'chain smoking' 'exit - no return' and 'ambition' --- are these the same versions from A Retrospective or were those rerecordings?

supposedly there were 12 songs though. where are the other 8?

so why has no one ever released it? judging on what did come out and how great a songwriter vic godard is, how could no one release it?

Welcome to the wonderful world of record companies.

I believe the "unreleased" album was released by Overground in 1996 as disc 2 of We Oppose All Rock 'N' Roll (the first disc being the same as A Retrospective).

I believe Dr. C's the acknowledged expert on all matters Subway Sect 'though....

"Welcome to the wonderful world of record companies."

In this instance, I rather suspect, twinned with the wonderful world of managers - specifically one Mr. Bernard Rhodes.

The original album never was released - few tracks were leaked out in various ways - three tracks (poor sounding, from cassette) on the "bonus CD" released as part of Overground's "We Oppose All Rock & Roll" ("Exit - No Return," "Parallel Lines" and "Staying Out Of View" (aka "Out Of Touch"), an alternate version of "Parallel Lines" on the C81 cassette, plus "Parallel Lines," "Chain Smoking, "Exit - No Return" and "Ambition" on the "Twenty Odd Years" 2xCD on Motion. These are from a better sounding cassette, but still leave a lot to be desired.

In total, that's five tracks plus an alternate version. There were something like 16 tracks recorded (apparently). I know of a musician who found the masters by accident and returned them to Bernie Rhodes (shortly after they were recorded, so like 28 years ago) and there they presumably stay. It's all his fault - I know labels and people (including Vic's manager) who've tried to track him down to no avail. Personally, I've always suspected the tapes are missing / damaged. There just isn't any reason for the fact it's never been issued.

Rhodes is to blame. Wouldnt be surprised if he lost them since he was more concerned with that other band he was manager of...

I have that compilation cd with some of the tracks.

nineteen years pass...

story as told by guitarist over a couple of copies of Ugly Things is pretty interesting.

Haven't half a dozen or so tracks come out on compilations over the years?

It sounded from reading the article by Bob Symmons as though he'd gone looking for the tapes too late. Got in contact with the guy who produced the l.p. only to find the studio had moved with archive.
Symmons went to the newer location only to be told studio had closed down and the tapes had gone into a skip about a week earlier which had then been emptied. So unless anybody else had a copy that seems to be that. Vic Godard had been dismissive of the material when Symmons suggested recording.
Shame. I hadn't been aware of what was on the retrospective compilations that had been released a couple of decades ago. Had been thinking of getting one. Hoped the article might say that there was something new coming out. But instead sounds unlikely. Bernie Rhodes comes out of that article sounding really bad. I should probably be more aware of this already. & Godard seems to have fallen far too under his sway. It does appear that 78 and 79 material was revisited under different circumstances but I'm not sure with who. Looks like a couple of original Orange Juice members talked about setting up a new band with Symmons in the early 80s but nothing came of it.

The majority of the songs got recreated on the Subway Sect album "78 now", it's excellently done: same guitars and drums as the originals, Vic sings with the same voice as before, you could forget this wasn't recorded in 1978.

yeah but its lacking Rob Symmons guitar and the original production. Was really hoping that stuff had been compiled.
Major drag that the band weren't given better management.
Sounds like Symmons lost any confidence he was gaining. Would love to hear that band that didn't happen with King and Daly of Orange Juice particularly having read Hungry Beat recently.

Bernie Rhodes definitely has a lot to answer for.
