The second half might be their best album, the first half, not so sure. Thoughts?

My "review":

All I'll add today is that Ant's previous production, the I Self Devine album, remains the most underrated hip-hop record of the year, easily.

Agreed. I was really dissapointed then it just totally picks up in the second half.

The whole thing is a lot grimier than usual. I like.

It's weird - I LOVE the Lucy Ford e.p.s disc, but I haven't been able to get into any other album at all. Are they all produced by the same guy? Is his lyrical style/content really different on the Lucy Ford cuts?

same guy on all of them. I could barely listen to the promo, the "your name here" aspect was just too distracting, and I never got a real copy, so I'm not sure what I think of it quality-wise.

Too bad. I actually loved the Madvillain promo disclaimer, which almost sounds like part of the music. I never got a "your name here" promo for this, though Slug said there was one somewhere with my name on it somewhere. Did yours say "This is for Michaelangelo Matos" or something?

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 9 November 2005 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

yep

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know. A sexy voice whispering my name in my ear as I listened to the record made me like more!

I also like thinking that it was someone's job to learn how to pronounce my name correctly. The folks at Biz 3 doesn't even know who the voice is. Some mystery siren is calling us, Matos! How dare you ignore her call!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

"Whiney" is very easy to pronounce, dude.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

As phoenetically clean as it may seem to editor-types, and considering there's a Mark Weingarten who's been at this way longer than me (no relation... I think), you have know idea how many people fuck up "Weingarten."

Also, I was thinking mainly of Piotr Orlov's copy, with Biz3 assures me is pronounced correctly.

Now I totally want to track down my own mispronounced promo.

There are great tracks on both God Loves Ugly and Seven's Travels, but they come across better live (especially the live-band version of that "Caged Bird" song, which ends too quickly to make the impression it deserves on Seven's Travels). "Trying to Find a Balance" kills live with Ant DJing.

Overcast! is ahn-cray-eeb-lay.

Isn't there a live band on some of this?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 November 2005 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I started downloading this and it got interrupted just before track 8. I think the seeder completely vanished off the face of the earth. My impression was "man this is great, I wonder if the second half's as good as the first". I am gonna buy it for sho.

Isn't there a live band on some of this?

He's had live musicians here and there on the last couple albums, but the live-band thing is strictly live--for now...

I'm liking the music more and more and feeling lil connectin to the lyrics, which usually used to grab me and make me feel special that I know what the "CC Club" is etc etc
