But the Genesis thing in my book is only gonna be a one-off deal. And it's probably only gonna be in England.
Damn! Why does England have the good bands. They could keep Collins though.

I always got the impression that the thing that's been stopping this from happening is Gabriel, and that he found/finds the older Genesis music embarrasing. It doesn't exactly endear him to me, I must admit. Like, there was this blurb on Genesis' website about how they were going through their archive of live tapes, but the only stuff that was slated for possible release was post-Gabriel. It's kind of like Steve Hillage's attitude to his back catalogue, I just don't get it.
This might just be promo-related to do with the 5.1 back catalog reissue, or maybe someone at EMI noticed that the Van Der Graaf Generator reunion seems to have been pretty successful, and figured it might be a good time to stick a bit of pressure on, or perhaps they actually all want to do it, who knows?
Obviously if they did some gigs, it would be the best thing ever for me. It pains me to admit it, but I'd pay out plenty, and travel to just about anywhere in the world if this happened as a one-off.

1st December 2005
In the light of current speculation about their activities, the members of the Genesis have issued the following statement through Tony Smith Personal Management:
"There are no decisions by Genesis to perform anywhere whatsoever at this time. This situation will not alter in the next twelve months."
"...in the next twelve months" they sure as fuck know how keep 'em going, don't they?
― Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)
Btw, regarding Jeff Lynne, he is an excellent producer and an excellent songwriter, but he wouldn't fit in on a Genesis record.

"We sat in a room last November, the five of us - Peter Gabriel, me, Steve, Mike and Tony, to discuss the possibility of doing something, and that something would be The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway which is the last thing we did. Doing a limited run of shows, recording it, filming it. And everybody's kind of enthusiastic about doing it, and we're all trying to work out a time to do it."

Two things suggest to me that this isn't Genesis:
1) They performed together up to 75 and, of course, Six of the Best in 1982. Hardly 35 years in anybody's book.
2) I cannot believe they would not be headlining for the Friday night.
So any ideas on "one of the biggest bands in the world" who last played together 35 years ago? I can't think of many contenders who don't have seriously dead members, to be honest.

Not with "And Then There Were Three" or "Duke" no. Both were great album, not by Genesis' standards, but still by more or less everyone else's standards.

Of course, Genesis at their musically best needs at least Hackett, and preferrably also Gabriel, to be worth paying attention to.
― Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)
I don't know - the Gabriel-era stuff seems to sell more now, and the people who care about any Genesis reunion want Gabriel in on it. I reckon the smart thing to do would be for them to complete the process of remastering all the albums and then go on tour, PG and all.
― LC (Damian), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)
Apparently, "Duke", an album that has little of both Genesis's but was still after the departure of Gabriel and Hackett, is their best back-catalogue seller.
And having been on various Genesis mailing lists and Genesis sites, it still amazes me how many fans of 80s Genesis there are out there. I mean, they are usually mainly Phil Collins fans rather than Genesis fans, but still....

OK, seriously now, Duke?
It's the most "just-there" album Genesis has done... better than Abacrap and what followed and a bit better than And Then There Was Three, but otherwise...
Unless "Misunderstanding" got used in a VW commercial or something recently, this makes no sense.

Wasn't the phil collins led genesis of the early 90s essentially solo phil collins?
It might seem that way, but for us who know the group closely, "No Son Of Mine" sounds a lot like a typical Tony Banks composition.
