Good news. I'll say it's a 30% chance on it actually happening.

Voodoo Child, Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

the rumor lately is that there is a meeting b/w the five of them and management this month to work something out. I'm sure it will happen; I bet it won't be a tour though, unfortunately.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

new record to be produced by Jeff Lynne!

.. made ya look. God, that would be the worst.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

What's bad about Jeff Lynne? Nothing!

He's definately underrated to everyone who don't listen to ELO.

Voodoo Child, Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

everyone who don't listen to ELO

i.e., people who are only judging him on the past twenty years.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Ref: Beatles, George Harrison.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Even Lynne's solo album was good.

But the Genesis thing in my book is only gonna be a one-off deal. And it's probably only gonna be in England.

Damn! Why does England have the good bands. They could keep Collins though.

Voodoo Child, Thursday, 10 November 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Keep Collins, England.

Phil rules! Great drummer! Great 80s pop star!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

I bet Kim's booked her flight already.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 10 November 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Huh. That would be quite cool. But even Collins admitted he was Clam Central Station when he sat in with the Musical Box, so I'd say he has a lot of work ahead of him. Also, can anyone imagine Collins exclusively behind the drums, playing second banana after the past 25 years of swapping in and out with a second drummer?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

sundar, you bitch.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

he always seemed really, really into playing with Brand X - I'd guess that he might really enjoy the opportunity to just PLAY

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

he's said in recent interviews that he's very interested in playing the lamb. i think he was the catalyst for this reunion stuff.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

If they did it like the '80s one-off reunion then Phil would be out front a lot of the time, and that would suck, as much as I love Phil. I would consider selling my car to be able to get to England if they don't come over here with a tour.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 10 November 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

According to the on-off blather about this in recent months, Collins' only interest in doing this is if he's purely the drummer.

I always got the impression that the thing that's been stopping this from happening is Gabriel, and that he found/finds the older Genesis music embarrasing. It doesn't exactly endear him to me, I must admit. Like, there was this blurb on Genesis' website about how they were going through their archive of live tapes, but the only stuff that was slated for possible release was post-Gabriel. It's kind of like Steve Hillage's attitude to his back catalogue, I just don't get it.

This might just be promo-related to do with the 5.1 back catalog reissue, or maybe someone at EMI noticed that the Van Der Graaf Generator reunion seems to have been pretty successful, and figured it might be a good time to stick a bit of pressure on, or perhaps they actually all want to do it, who knows?

Obviously if they did some gigs, it would be the best thing ever for me. It pains me to admit it, but I'd pay out plenty, and travel to just about anywhere in the world if this happened as a one-off.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 10 November 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

You wish England had kept Collins. He's here in Geneva :(
Heard about the only-as-a-drummer clause too.

He's here in Geneva...

Statement from the members of Genesis

1st December 2005

In the light of current speculation about their activities, the members of the Genesis have issued the following statement through Tony Smith Personal Management:

"There are no decisions by Genesis to perform anywhere whatsoever at this time. This situation will not alter in the next twelve months."

"...in the next twelve months" they sure as fuck know how keep 'em going, don't they?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Too bad (by now, at least)

Btw, regarding Jeff Lynne, he is an excellent producer and an excellent songwriter, but he wouldn't fit in on a Genesis record.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 4 December 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

after hearing the latest Kate Bush album, i feel like the world is ready for phil collins again. but when bands reform, doesn't is always WITHOUT FAIL, suck? therefore, this depresses me a bit.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 4 December 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Bands reforming to compose new material is usually dud. Bands reforming to tour their old material may be great though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 4 December 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

no, the Mission of Burma comeback record was excellent

Wow this thread - I was just thinking about ELO today for no particular reason.

Vinegar and Artichoke Hearts (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 December 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Roight, this from Mr. Collins - I am typing it from a radio broadcast, so that's my, er, source.

"We sat in a room last November, the five of us - Peter Gabriel, me, Steve, Mike and Tony, to discuss the possibility of doing something, and that something would be The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway which is the last thing we did. Doing a limited run of shows, recording it, filming it. And everybody's kind of enthusiastic about doing it, and we're all trying to work out a time to do it."

Listen here if you will.

I love ELO and I love Genesis. Lynne producing Genesis would still be a bad idea though.

three months pass...
BBC radio reports that the guy who organizes the Glastonbury
festival says that at next year's event he has a band headlining that hasn't played together for thirty years.

Supercalifragilisticexpiala Brosius (chaki), Sunday, 23 July 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

I guess, like the Floyd reunion, they've decided a one-off is better than trying to do a whole tour...maybe for the best, but still kind of disappointing.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 23 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

So I guess they'll be doing a "hits" set as opposed to the Lamb stage show...

LC (Damian), Sunday, 23 July 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

So the three headliners for Glastonbury 2007 will most likely be Genesis fronted by Gabriel, Arctic Monkeys and Kylie

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 23 July 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

According to NME (http://www.nme.com/news/kylie-minogue/23691) band will be the penultimate band or 3 band on the billing for Friday night.

Two things suggest to me that this isn't Genesis:

1) They performed together up to 75 and, of course, Six of the Best in 1982. Hardly 35 years in anybody's book.

2) I cannot believe they would not be headlining for the Friday night.

So any ideas on "one of the biggest bands in the world" who last played together 35 years ago? I can't think of many contenders who don't have seriously dead members, to be honest.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's not 35 years, but nearly -

Roxy Music with Brian Eno !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 23 July 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Facetious answer = Stackridge (West Country, innit, plus first ever show Glasto 1970 and split up in early 1976)

Serious possible answer = The Move/Roy Wood era ELO.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 23 July 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

The last time Genesis were on tour together was in 1992. So, no, not them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 23 July 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

35 years? What headlining band haven't played together since 1971-2?, Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, so that's only 32 years at most.

J (Jay), Sunday, 23 July 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it's the Jeremy Spencer version of Fleetwood Mac. Heh.

J (Jay), Sunday, 23 July 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

re the 35 years, this may not been an accurate term? e.g Eavis is unlikely to say something like 32 years? as that would let the cat out of the bag

It's either
Roxy Music with Eno
or
Genesis with Gabriel

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 23 July 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Eavis also hinted at a surprise performance from a band who haven't played together for 35 years on the Friday night.

He added: "At the time they were one of the biggest bands in the world. No one can guess who they are, it's a lovely mystery.

"They will play on the Friday night, either the penultimate or two down from the top on the billing."

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

"At the time"
So they broke up while they were huge? Who were the top selling bands in 1971?

Marmot 4-Tay: Hold these goddamn chickens! (marmotwolof), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

Derek And the Dominoes? But one of them is dead too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

My guess is the Quaife/Avory/Davies/Davies line-up of The Kinks, but I think they did play again once at a R&R Hall Of Fame or something

Not with "And Then There Were Three" or "Duke" no. Both were great album, not by Genesis' standards, but still by more or less everyone else's standards.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

After dragging this out for so long w/hints about gabriel & hackett being involved, this fucking totally blowz. WTF is the point.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 October 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the Genesis of 1978-1991 was a bestselling entity, so I guess there may be some point if the point is selling records and making people go to gigs.

Of course, Genesis at their musically best needs at least Hackett, and preferrably also Gabriel, to be worth paying attention to.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

the Genesis of 1978-1991 was a bestselling entity

I don't know - the Gabriel-era stuff seems to sell more now, and the people who care about any Genesis reunion want Gabriel in on it. I reckon the smart thing to do would be for them to complete the process of remastering all the albums and then go on tour, PG and all.

LC (Damian), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know - the Gabriel-era stuff seems to sell more now

Apparently, "Duke", an album that has little of both Genesis's but was still after the departure of Gabriel and Hackett, is their best back-catalogue seller.

And having been on various Genesis mailing lists and Genesis sites, it still amazes me how many fans of 80s Genesis there are out there. I mean, they are usually mainly Phil Collins fans rather than Genesis fans, but still....

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

They only hit the commercial big time with hits like I Can't Dance, Mama and Invisible Touch after Gabriel left.

Okay, of those three songs "Invisible Touch" gets listed LAST?????????????

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

LC (Damian), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

i just picked up Abacab on vinyl...it's not bad actually...I love "No Reply At All" and some of the songs are kind of cool and wierd in that way of a band sort of stuck between prog and pop....strange in a way.

..back to used record stores.

OK, seriously now, Duke?

It's the most "just-there" album Genesis has done... better than Abacrap and what followed and a bit better than And Then There Was Three, but otherwise...

Unless "Misunderstanding" got used in a VW commercial or something recently, this makes no sense.

The only Genesis album that is really closing in on bad is "We Can't Dance". But even that one has decent tracks such as "No Son Of Mine" and "Driving The Last Spike".

Wasn't the phil collins led genesis of the early 90s essentially solo phil collins?

It might seem that way, but for us who know the group closely, "No Son Of Mine" sounds a lot like a typical Tony Banks composition.
