just got a promo of it and how I wish tortoise were nowhere near it. in my head them collaborating on covers of lungfish, devo, minutemen, springsteen etc... would be amazing.
the elton john cover is good though...

AWFUL is what it also is.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Thursday, 10 November 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

i kinda like it. it's probably gonna get knocked around for being kind of akward considering who's doing it. But i'm still enjoying it. Ditto on Elton John "Daniel", that's the track that seems to have worked the best. The Devo track seems to really fall on it's face. But that's kind of the fun IMO.

Just wish I could find the album artwork for my iTunes!! Does your copy have artwork you could scan for a poor soul?

i could(nt) believe the slagging off pfork gave 'Thunder Road' yesterday - i've only heard that, the devo and the daniel but i thought they did a great job on reworking bruce's tune. been listening to it all week - the 6 minutes seem to go past in 2.

d-90 (D-90), Thursday, 10 November 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

tracklist please?

who put this out, anyway? rather, who PLANS to?

i agree, d-90, i really like thunder road but thats the only one i've heard

post leak world, Thursday, 10 November 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

"Thunder Road" is absolutely incredible...it has a lead synth line that's reminiscent of Supersilent accompanied by crashing cymbals and some of my favorite harmonizing by Mr. Oldham. "Roll down the window and let the wind blow..." Beautiful slow jam.

"Daniel" brings a tear to my eye every time, and the upbeat Portuguese jammer "Cravo É Canela" by Milton Nascimento is high quality indeed.

The Devo...well...yeah...just skip it :D
Everything else is quite nice.

I WISH Bonnie Raitt would collabo with Tortoise. I love her slide playing but never like any of her music - maybe a different vehicle is what's needed.

grauzy (grauzone), Thursday, 10 November 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Calvary Cross is such a great song, and I can totally imagine BPB singing it. I don't really get the idea behind having Tortoise back him up though - seems like a total mismatch.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 November 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Overcoat is putting it out in the US.

I think this thing is great. IMO this is the best Tortoise have sounded in years. The Lungfish cover is a fantastic nihilist grinder.

Pharmaceutical Executive, Thursday, 10 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Anywhere on the net I can hear tracks? Samples?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

thunder road.. http://s60.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3IOBVICEJBDD602XX1I3F69CCN

d-90 (D-90), Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

My favorite part on "Thunder Road" is how the line about making his guitar talk is immediately followed by a stop and a sustained bass throb. Great. All in the details kids. That's why you loved Tortoise in the first place, remember?

Pharmaceutical Executive, Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

This is pretty boring, honestly. The vox have no presence, the music is static.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

its a whole lot better than kevin rowland's mess of it.

d-90 (D-90), Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Back up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 November 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Whoa, Quix*o*tic and Lungfish! I wish they would do a whole album of obscure DC covers... maybe some Branch Manager, Hoover, Shudder to Think, Q and Not U...

Caught Red Handed at Sam's Hofbrau (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 10 November 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

THUMBS DOWN BROS.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 10 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm very leering of the bad reviews of anythingTortoise, cuz of, you know, BACKLASHrules.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i think that the 2 songs I've heard (thunder road, danny) sound kinda fun. I'm more of a casual fan of both oldham and tortoise, so maybe my expectations aren't exactly high. oldham sounds pretty good on both of them...

Tyler Wilcox (tylerw), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I like every Tortoise album so far! I often defend It's All Around You against naysayers, and I think Standards was really under-appreciated. But this track is dullsville.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I am LOVING this "Thunder Road"!

Caught Red Handed at Sam's Hofbrau (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

its a whole lot better than kevin rowland's mess of it.

...which, of course, The Boss insisted he pull from the album.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
I finally downloaded this since I have eMusic now. Cravo E Cavela is the only standout track for me so far.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 7 September 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

I like this album a lot more than I thought I would
