Ha, I was going to search the archives to see if there was a thread on him.

Saw him with Melt Banana on Tuesday, just incredible. I'm not quite sure exactly how much of it he intends and how much is random chance, but it's a thrilling 5 minutes.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I had the opportunity to see him once before, but arrived in the aftermath. There was mustard everywhere.

Saw Melt Banana last night. DJ Scotch Egg supported with a hilarious set. I was pelted with a scotch egg. Clever, that.

MESTEMA (davidcorp), Friday, 11 November 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

There wasn't nearly as much blood on Tuesday as I expected, or at least not when he was on stage.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 11 November 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Did he smash the plate with his head, or just kinda gnaw on it? And was he wearing the toolbelt? I hoep he's waering a toolbelt. There's not nearly enough toolbelts in modern music.

MESTEMA (davidcorp), Friday, 11 November 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

He broke the first bit off, held it between his teeth and banged it off the big piece until another bit broke off. After a bit more playing he smashed the final bit off his face and rubbed it in.

Yup, he was wearing the toolbelt.

BUMP FOR BITING FUCKING GLASS

shanissey, Sunday, 24 February 2008 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

we put justice yeldham up for the night on friday. didn't realise his act was throwing up on a plate of glass and then smashing it all over himself before i agreed to this.

which is exactly what i did to the sofas as it happens

dog latin, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)

lovely bloke though. he cut his chin quite badly during his performance. had a pots'n'pans jam with scotch egg and about 15 other people in our kitchen that night too. dj shitmat passed out with his head in my friend's bedroom door right at the beginning of the night - lightweight! sorry i don't often get the chance to name drop so please humour me ;-)

dog latin, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

It is true that these gentlemen bring the party

DJ Mencap, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Lukas seemed pretty wasted last time I saw him. Was that the case this time too? I can see how it could help.

I have the Live in Beirut 7", and it's generously smeared with his blood. Somewhat profound for the location.

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

He seemed perhaps a little distant, but then you would be too if you'd just smashed glass all over yourself then been asked to go to a house party with a bunch of people you don't know very well in an English cultural outback with the hopes of maybe going to sleep but then realising that this was impossible.

dog latin, Monday, 16 June 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

I was wondering more if he found it easier to have a few drink to numb down a little before the act, rather than after.

He's playing London tonight actually, but there's a few other shows too. Might catch him...

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 16 June 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be at the London show tonight coz my friend is in Inseminoid who are supporting. I'm looking forward to it after this thread.

Raw Patrick, Monday, 16 June 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

It was OK.

If it was Steve O he would have set his cock on fire too or something.

Dude played for a half hour!

Inseminoid great.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, OTM - I reviewed him a while back and said something to this effect re: the fact he gets to move in the avenues he does and gets talked up as performance art... OTOH it's sort of hard to figure how seriously people take him

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 08:21 (seventeen years ago)

the fact he gets to move in the avenues he does

Which avenues do you mean, exactly? I've not really heard him being talked up as performance art, really. Spectacle, certainly. But I don't know of anyone intellectualising it or anything, if that's what you mean. Regardless, the fact is, he makes great noise! Take away the bloodlust and it's still there. The glass produces a remarkable range of sounds. There's an interesting interview (on youtube?) where he talks about how he stumbled across his glass technique and how versatile it is.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

Having said that, he's been doing the same thing for quite some time. Unless his recent shows are different somehow? It's just incredible to think that he still enjoys doing it. If he does at all?! Does he?? Dog Latin??

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, I presume he enjoys the noise aspect, but the cuts must get pretty fucking tedious.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

He seemed to enjoy it last night. His set was pretty much a stand up comedy routine by the end.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 10:09 (seventeen years ago)

My friend was saying that he was sad that someone who seems quite retiring in real life can only seem to get attention from doing something like this. I disagree - yes he is quite a quiet chap (or at least he seemed so when I met him), but reading the interview it seems he does believe that what he's doing is musical, is a performance, is something he really enjoys doing and isn't deliberately put together to shock. He cut his chin pretty badly and was obviously kind of out of it immediately afterwards (first thing he said to me was "do you smoke cigarettes?"). The promoter was delibitating over the accident book and he was going "I don't care about the accident book, I've got blood pouring out my chin" or words to that extent, which made me laugh a bit.
