Most shameless Neu! rip-offs

Stereolab's "Jenny Ondioline"

Fortunately, most of their undergraduate fans are too dense to know this. Also, I think it was RARE @@P at the time.

Jdubz (ex machina), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

it's an HOMAGE, jdubz. :-)

Mrs. Genius McGuruchakra (and her secret knowledge) (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Closest thing to full on pop-Neu! cloning I can think of is Placebo's "Slave to the Wage" (with extra bonus Pavement sample).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

JBR, your Noise Board pledge name is JBEERZ.

Jdubz (ex machina), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Red Sails - Bowie

everything, Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

ooh there was that one song by that band a couple years ago. shit. what was their name??? the name was [word][word], like talk talk or the gris gris, but neither of those.

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Wilco, "Spiders (Kidsmoke)"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

"Transient Noise Bursts" is pretty fucking great.... why did Stereolab get bad?

Jdubz (ex machina), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Hey now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

They didn't get bad, they just stagnated. I think they're pretty classique up through Cobra and Phases Group.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Also Ned produced the last one, so you know, watch it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

blame chicago "post" rockers

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

i was serious about mine, people! help me think. it was a debut album from 2003, came out in the summer or something - ZR and i got it at our college radio station and played it a lot...

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I hope someone's off getting links to all the "When Did Stereolab Lose It" threads so I don't have to.

everything, Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Pete, the only thing that comes to mind is Chin Up Chin Up.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

blame chicago "post" rockers

That's for damn sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

The Telstar Ponies had a song with a German title that pretty much boasted itself as a Neu rip-off.

Tall Dwarfs had a droney song called "Neusyland", although it wasn't barely as much of a Neu rip off as other bands who wouldn't admit it (at the time).

...

I still remember when people were calling early Stereolab songs "a rip off of Unrest's 'Hydrofoil'"... Oi! (so, yeah, "Hydrofoil" qualifies as well.)

And the worst one of all..

BEACH BOYS "ALL I WANNA DO" (the one off 20/20 with the fucking sounds at the end)

POSERS!

(plurplurplur) ^_- DJ 'O' Nut -_^ (rulprulprulp) (donut), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

JOURNEY BY PHARAOH OVERLORD.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

salvatore
secret machines (at least they covered a harmonia song on their most recent ep)

bobby.lasers, Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

everything by NEU! rosis, heh. (kidding)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

JOURNEY BY PHARAOH OVERLORD.

Damn, I hadn't listened to that album all the way through before so I just played this track. Pretty shameless.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

"Primitive" by Killing Joke swipes the riff from Neu's "Negativland".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

some of that Quickspace Supersport stuff.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Yus.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

"Der Mussolini" by DAF and it has the same producer!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

"White Hour" by Omoide Hatoba (from 1996's Kinsei) (which featured Seiichi Yamamoto, formerly of Boredoms)

(plurplurplur) ^_- DJ 'O' Nut -_^ (rulprulprulp) (donut), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps someone's mentioned him alreaday, but lots of stuff on Julilan Cope's Jehovahkill, specifically "The Subtle Energies Commission".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Lilys - Zero Population Growth has a full mini albums worth of Neu love.

Also Djed by Tortoise in places.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Death In Vegas, "Sons of Rother"

(the entire album is a note-for-note ripoff of various krautrock bands ... it's also an AWESOME ripoff ... such a cruelly ignored album)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

THat Omoide Hatoba isn't that much of a rip.

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

barry otm, that last div album was fantastic.

kelley stoltz, "mt. fuji". in light of its mention upthread, the live version gets double points for nicking the "we're all going to the hinterland" bit from bowie's "red sails"!

pretentiosexual rights activist (haitch), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

chrisma!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Barbara Manning: Stammisch (?). I remember first hearing that and thinking "wow, that's a great Neu! rip-off". I think Jenny Ondioline is likely my favorite Stereolab song precisely because of its obvious origins.

Joel (aquabahn), Friday, 11 November 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

La Dusseldorf

amon (eman), Friday, 11 November 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Death In Vegas, "Sons of Rother"
(the entire album is a note-for-note ripoff of various krautrock bands ... it's also an AWESOME ripoff ... such a cruelly ignored album)

So true! One of my '04 favourites. "Sons of Rother" touches me very deeply, there's something very melancholic & touching in the interplay of the synths providing the propulsive beat and those that are *swooning* on top of it.

willem (willem), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

As it so happens, I've been listening to DIV a lot this week ... "Sons of Rother" used to be my favourite, but now I'm hooked on "Anita Berber" (aka I Can't Believe It's Not Roedelius).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Closest thing to full on pop-Neu! cloning I can think of is Placebo's "Slave to the Wage" (with extra bonus Pavement sample).

I don't get this at all. Are you comparing it with the likes of "Lila Engel"?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

on-topic: "More Time", the recent 7" Schneider TM release on Earsugar under his Dr. Drek moniker, is another great song crafted following the Neu! recipe...

willem (willem), Friday, 11 November 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

Can't believe no-one's mentioned "Funtime" by Iggy Pop yet! Talk about master turned pupil! Hooooooooohhhh boy!

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 11 November 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

pete - i think yr talkin about nice nice?

YESSSSS!

-- petesmith (plsmit...), November 10th, 2005. (later)

That was the title of their newest EP, no?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

holy shit! i had no idea, alex! i see from their homepage that their cdep that came out in august is called YESSS!. thats creepy.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Primal Scream - Autobahn 66. Obviously a Kraftwerk homage but also pure Neu! 75.

Dorian Lynskey, Friday, 11 November 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Essentially the music press crucified Death In Vegas for being supported solely by their guest vocalists and then when they release a great instumental album all they get is a resounding Meh.

its a great album as its so obviously a homage / rippoff, you cant call BS on it.

Eine fur die damen, kills it for me...

see also emperor machine for the Nu-kraut sound.

and some of Isolee's album

danny boy, Friday, 11 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

some moments on broadcast's "tender buttons" are pretty neu-ish.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

moreso with the live drums last night then on the record even. There were 2 or 3 moments at the show last night where they out-stereolab'd the Neu! groove, I kept thinking, "this is motorifik!"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah, they were pretty awesome, even if i like the earlier, less-motorik/electro-y stuff a l'il better.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Harmonia, Monza

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

aw man - i cant WAIT to see them tomorrow night. did they have copies of the tour-only cd?

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

uh - xpost to stencil and dan...

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Uncle Wiggly's "Express" is a lovely "Negativland" (song not band) rewrite.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

did they have copies of the tour-only cd?

yeah, $8.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I bought it, 10 or so 1.5 minute long tracks of cool, noodly, like demo ideas or whatever. Pretty neat.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

sweet.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

call me crazy, but i was convinced that pink floyd's "speak to me/breathe" off dark side was a rip off of "souderoujebob/weimensee," tracks 2 and 3 on Neu!, which had came out like a year earlier.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 11 November 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

A complete ripoff, and we're pretty proud of it (hence the title: "Alt" = Neu = DO YOU SEE)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 12 November 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Closest thing to full on pop-Neu! cloning I can think of is Placebo's "Slave to the Wage" (with extra bonus Pavement sample).

I don't get this at all. Are you comparing it with the likes of "Lila Engel"?

OK, I just listened to it and now I understand. I was thinking about the chorus but there's definitely a fair bit of Neu! in the verses.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 12 November 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

ten years pass...

idk this is kinda great.
