the geto boy, that is.

i have some money to buy cd's, for the first time in god knows how long, and i was thinking maybe one of the things i buy should be a scarface album.

am i correct?

which one/s should i buy?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

do you have the last geto boys lp, with g-code on it?

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

"My Diary" and "The Fix" are especially worthy.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

"do you have the last geto boys lp, with g-code on it?"

nope. i love the self-titled geto boys and 'we can't be stopped', but i found 'the resurrection' to be a yawn-fest, so i kinda decided the geto boys went boring as they got older, so i didn't bother getting their new one. should i?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

nah, its on loads of mixes though, get the dj keyz one maybe

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

obv a giant classic. get the fix and the greatest hits comp. destroy the
master p guest appearance "homies and thugs".

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah the fix is really fantastic

dave k, Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Nah Geto Boys didn't really fall off, their album this year is really great, and The Fix is a really recent release too, 2002 I think, and it's fantastic. The Diary is a great early Scarface release, and Mr Scarface is Back. Which one has "Dying with my boots on" or whatever? I can't think of the name. Anyway its good too.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

I could not for the life of me understand why people hated on The Resurrection, I thought it was almost 100% awesome with the noteworthy stinker "We Boogie" only bringing down the proceedings for a couple of minutes

I'll second The Fix, thing is a masterpiece

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I wish I liked The Fix. I think there are just two tracks that I don't want to skip over.

oops (Oops), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Can't go wrong with either The Fix, Mr. Scarface is Back or The Diary. Not a bad song on The Fix - "poppish", by Scarface standards, and lots of guests. If you're looking for straight gangsterism and mental unsoundness like "Mind Playing Tricks on Me", then his solo debut, Mr. Scarface is Back, is what you want. The Diary is somewhere in between - darker beats and content than The Fix, but more remorseful about his gangster days than Mr. Scarface is Back. All are really good though.

xpost - I'm the opposite of oops. There's only one or two tracks I'd skip over.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

"In Cold Blood" is a fuck great song btw.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Thats it, The World is Yours. Thats a great album too, stuff in the vein of The Diary. "Never Seen a Man Cry" was one of my favorite rap songs when I was 10! Fucked up.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost - totally. and "on my block", which has a pretty cool video.

amon (eman), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

mr scarface is back is definitely classic.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Classic all the way. I have all the albums on cassette and just recently was on a similar kick and bought the Greatest Hits on CD. "Money and The Power" takes me back!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

the greatest hits has tons of great songs on it (though no "my block") but the stylistic shifts through Scarface's phases are jarring. There's an Ice Cubeish song, a G-Funk song, a Master P song, a Kanye song...

Sym Sym (sym), Friday, 11 November 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

S: the song where he lifts the melody from 99 Luftballoons.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Friday, 11 November 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

haha what is this an elephant man thread all of a sudden.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 11 November 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Say - whatever the fuck happened to Willie D??

He's kinda the Andrew MCarthy of hip hop. Andrew MCarthy - that WAS the other guy in Wham!, right?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

its willie d y'all! Its been a minute y'all!

Apparently he's working in ... i think real estate now? Something like that. But he's on the most recent geto boys album from earlier this year!

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

real estate. in azerbaijan. check this interview.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 11 November 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

yo another call for mr scarface is back. i like the diary too. not so much the world is yrs. check the 4hero mix of never seen a man die/cry.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 11 November 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

"Diary of a madman" off "mr. scarface..is back" is my shit.

"World is yours" is worth having for the 5 or so good tracks, "the fix" is excellent but "the diary" is the one. Good god that album is amazing. It's all about "jesse james" and "i seen a man die".

Not a great album but that "balls and my word" cd with some unreleased tracks RAP-A-LOT put out to capitalize on the success/acclaim of "the fix" has one of Scarface's best ever songs on it in "dirty money".

Also search his verses on Kool G. Rap and Ice Cube's "two to the head" and "betrayal" by Gang Starr.

ELLI$, Friday, 11 November 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

i like the verse on the freeway album, its fine, but every scarface cameo sounds the fucking same now. and he needs to stop saying daddy and get rid of the 'im so weary, me' shtick. zzzz. not looking hugely forward to the new album.

this doesn't matter 4 years later but i have no idea who luriqua is or what this means.

all i can remember about sterl clov on rap is him not getting nas and said something like, "it's just a guy talking in rhythm over a beat"!

dylannn, Thursday, 18 April 2013 08:59 (twelve years ago)

if i still posted on ilm, i would have talked about emeritus. rap-a-lot, old houston heads like k-rino on it, z-ro hooks, greasy 2008 cool & dre beats and no name production side by side, willie hutch samples, a recycled papa reu hook.

Rumors that his situation has worsened. Kidney failure... cmon man pull through please.

Spottie, Saturday, 11 April 2020 07:39 (five years ago)

I keep seeing this on Twitter but haven't seen a single news source on it. Everything I find is from March, including reference to his kidneys failing.

Have you seen a news source? Hoping it's not true :(

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 11 April 2020 11:00 (five years ago)

after doing more digging this morning, I am 99% sure this is bogus. I've been asking people for sources all morning, and every source provided has been either someone else's tweet with zero sourcing, with pull quotes from the original articles that broke in late March, or Bun B's Instagram post from late March when Scarface was first hospitalized. still zero news organizations picking it up. while that doesn't mean much, usually on Twitter if there's developing news that is beating the media, there's a source, someone who claimed to have been there and seen it.

like for instance when Christina Grimmie died in a shooting, someone on Twitter broke the news of her passing before the news outlets, but they cited family's Facebook page.

so I'm really really hoping this is bogus, but i'm gonna be hella mad at the twitter rumor mill for getting me freaked out about it!

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 11 April 2020 16:54 (five years ago)

I think this news is what people are picking up on like it is new news: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/coronavirus-scarface-symptoms-covid-19-pneumonia-kidney-failure-interview-a9429421.html

but in the article he had already recovered and gone home.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 11 April 2020 16:56 (five years ago)

two weeks pass...

so there was truth to the rumors, but he's out of the hospital again. was really frustrating that Twitter was mumbling about it and anytime I asked for a source, people kept pointing me back to the articles from a month earlier that were written after he'd left the hospital after his first admission, and he went back in after that.

hope he can get off of dialysis soon. Willie D is taking care of him apparently:
