Johnny Cash 70 S&D

It is Johnny Cash's 70th birthday today. And I could not find any thread on "the man in black" at ILM. Therefore the question what to search and to destroy from his long catalog. My favourite is his last record: Solitary Man.

Yes, search Live at Folsom Prison. Sony Legacy just reissued it in 1999 with some bonus tracks. Definitely a great album. I don't feel that I know the man enough to comment otherwise, though I have the three releases on American, all very good (I even think they get better as they go along). Also have the Love God Murder set, which has enough great songs on it to excuse the slightly hokey concept. Probably best of all would be the new Essential set (just saw it on the shelves today for the first time), which looks to have a whack o' good material.

search: The Essential Johnny Cash, the 3CD box set Legacy put out in '92 or so (NOT that double-disc thing that just came out). pretty great top to bottom

Absolutely Folsom Prison. American Recordings is mostly good. As someone with over 30 Johnny Cash LPs, I can only say that there are a few bad ones (you'll know to avoid Hymns) but nearly all are a mix. I really like The Storyteller, as that's the side of him I like best, and it has Boy Named Sue and my favourite The Diplomat, but it also has No Charge, ferfucksakes.

Folsome Prison, no doubt.

Also despite what Brock says I quite liked the U2 cover. And I hate U2 with a passion none of you can ever know, having grown up in Ireland.

Doesn't Johnny have a new album out this year sometime?

That was me, and i still stand by it, though i probably got a little too het up. I love Johnny Cash of course. I'm still haunted by John Doe saying in the liner notes of X Anthology that he wishes he and June Carter would sing "Burning House of Love". DO IT, JOHNNY!!

There is NOTHING negative one can say about the Man in Black. The man is a living legend who should be treasured while we still have him.
