Is it me or was Saturday night's Bauhaus show in New York a bit disappointing?

It definitely had more than a few shining moments, but I left feeling kinda "eh".
Or was it just the lack of "Bela"?

Dr. T (dr. t), Sunday, 13 November 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, you'll have to ask Alex in NYC.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Sunday, 13 November 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Wait, they're playing shows without "Bela Lugosi's Dead" in the setlist?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 13 November 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

haha you should have gone and seen Esteban Buttez & The Bisexual Goth Livejournal Girls in concert

we played a crankin version of "bela lugosi's dead" yo

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Sunday, 13 November 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

i hate fucking hipsters.

your mum (hydraulis2), Sunday, 13 November 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, I was not able to actually go to see Bauhaus last night after all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 November 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

i hate fucking hipsters.

then maybe you should try fucking yourself instead.

Thread is worse than Bauhaus.

Reggie, Monday, 14 November 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Thread is worse than Bauhaus.
yeah, it's got more pretentious assholes than Bauhaus.

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Kaliflwr certainly seemed very, very happy with it from the joyous email she sent me. (Which filled me with envy as I don't get to see them till next year.)

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

That's cool. In all fairness, the sound was pretty bad for the first few songs. Couldn't hear Murphy's voice at all in the first song, and the next two songs, the guitar was kinda out of control.
It didn't help that my friend got kinda sick during the encore.

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

My friend said it was great, although he mentioned that Peter seemed a bit fatigued and not especially kinetic onstage. And, y'know, no "Bela..."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

>And, y'know, no "Bela..."

Yeah, what's up with that? They should open with it, play it again about four songs in, and encore with it. Damn one-song-anybody-fuckin'-knows bands that don't know their place in the world...

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Did they play "Crowds"?

Guayaquil (eephus), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I understood why they didn't play it - just to add to their pretention - but yeah, they really should have played it. I mean it's a reunion show for chrissakes. It's almost like Skynard not playing "Freebird". I wonder if they're wiping it from all dates.

There was an audible sigh of dissappointment when the lights finally came on.

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

*ahem* They played it in LA, as you might have observed from the setlists posted on the other reunion tour thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

no, they didn't play "Crowds".

sorry i missed that, Ned. Now I really feel cheated.
Woozle wuzzle.

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

they played both crowds and bela in SF. weird, what DID they playin NYC? was the set short?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

They did "Crowds" in SF? Nice! Didn't do that in LA, that would have been fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

They did both in Seattle as well, I believe. Then again, maybe NYC got "Watch That Grandad Go" for all we know.

(plurplurplur) ^_- DJ 'O' Nut -_^ (rulprulprulp) (donut), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

no, it was a normal set. They played "She's in Parties", "Double Dare", "Ziggy Stardust", "Telegram Sam", "Hair of the Dog", "Hollow Hill", "Dark Entries", "The Passion of Lovers", "Terror Couple Kill Colonel", "Stigmata Martyr" and a few others.

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I still think they should have done a set of nothing but a 90 minute version of "Wasp."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

">And, y'know, no "Bela...""

Oh now that's not right. Not right at all.

"There was an audible sigh of dissappointment when the lights finally came on."

Aaaah well now, you see, I think you'll find that there lies the very root of your problem.

Obviously there should have been an audible sound of the entire audience slowly but systematically trashing the fuckin' theater until they did get "Bela".

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Doubtless 'twould have been a very different story indeed if Alex hadn't unfortunately been stuck at home caring for a poorly little Antichrist.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Stewart - I proceeded to do so - I pulled out my keychain screwdriver and unscrewed the nearest seat, whereby I placed it neatly on its side approximately 15 feet from its original location (I put the screws in a gum wrapper and attached it to a leg). I don't think anyone knew I was rioting - I think they thought it was performance art, judging from the indifferent looks on their faces.

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I suspect that you stapling that fish to it may unfortunately have given the wrong impression.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

A fish? What, with no potato?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Bela on Friday. No Bela on Saturday.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the fish was supposed to mean "hold your ground, rise up and politely ask for your song, undead children of the underworld".
I'm so misunderstood...

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

ah! so I picked the wrong night. kali - did you go both nights? if so, which was better?

Dr. T (dr. t), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

"A fish? What, with no potato?"

A potato??? Don't you realise that if he'd used a potato as well; in a post-modernist artistic statement like that: they'd almost certainly have ended up with an encore of "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything"???

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

BUT THIS IS HOW WE MAKE FISHCAKES DAMMIT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

My point exactly.

"All we ever wanted was everything
All we ever got was cold
Get up, eat fishcakes,
Sandwich bars, and barbed wire
Squash every week into a day...."

(That is right, isn't it?)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Uh, no. (Assuming you're not being sarcastic. ;-)

"Get up, eat *jelly*"

The fishcakes ("FISHCAKES!") part is from the "1. David Jay" etc. song they did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

"Assuming you're not being sarcastic."

Who? Me? I'm shocked that you could even imagine such a thing!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

ASTOUNDING.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

"it was a normal set. They played "She's in Parties", "Double Dare", "Ziggy Stardust", "Telegram Sam", "Hair of the Dog", "Hollow Hill", "Dark Entries", "The Passion of Lovers", "Terror Couple Kill Colonel", "Stigmata Martyr" and a few others."

That sounds like a great set to me! I'm going tonight and if they play all of these plus "Mask", "In The Flat Fields" and "Silent Hedges" I will be very happy!!!
I don't really mind if they don't play "Bela", but I know many people who would be disappointed. "Crowds" would be cool too.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

I heard the soundsystem at the Nokia Theater Times Square is awesome.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

so is this a bauhaus fansite?

i wonder if at their shows you people jack off secretly in the bathroom like i sometimes do at strip clubs.

Mon Star2 (hydraulis2), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

I went to both."Double Dare" was the second encore on the second night and "Bela" was the second encore the first night. I much more prefer "Double Dare" to "Bela" myself. I have to say I enjoyed the second night more as they seemed way more into it and the sound was better, but that could have been based on where I was standing.

"Silent Hedges" and "In The Flat Fields" were included both nights during the regular set. Opening with "Burning From The Inside" and also hearing "Slice Of Life" later took me by surprise.

Song played but not mentioned already were "Kick In The Eye," "God In An Alcove, "Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores," and "Swing The Heartache." I could be missing one, but I'm pretty sure that was it.

I think that leaves very little room for complaints myself.

As for the Nokia, it's very much a victim of its location (and seeing Bauhaus being flashed outside on the marquee amused me to no end). Very Times Square-ish. It's so new it smells new, but it is a very nice venue even if it does feel like a multiplex theater upon walking inside. The sound was good, but I didn't notice if was anything spectacular compared to other venues.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Just got back from the show and it was amazing. At the end Daniel Ash said something like we were their best crowd so far!
We got "Bela" as the first encore and although I also prefer "Double Dare", it was really powerful and the crowd went nuts. They played all the other songs mentioned above so I was really pleased with the setlist. "Slice Of Life" sounded great.
Peter Murphy seemed a bit tired, but his voice was perfect. The other three were spectacularly tight. My only complaints would be the sound during some songs and the fact that it went by so quickly!

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

sixteen years pass...

Welp, they're on tour again. I've seen them in various configurations, but never all together. Very excited!
