ME:thats crazy
Me says:aside from girls aloud i think shes had a couple of the best pop singles of the decade
cellar door says:i dont like some girls
cellar door says:wat!!
cellar door says:your insane!
ME:some girls is great. There's so much going on in the song, i must have heard it 50 times and i still pick up on new things, which is amazing for a mainstream pop song.
ME:why am i insane?
cellar door says:cos your the only person i have ever met who likes her
cellar door says:seriously]
ME:her album is in my top 5 of the year
Me:out of the 70 odd new releases i have
cellar door says:well if thats how you feel
cellar door says:bu if you were to compare her with kylie would you say rachel is better?
cellar door says:or gwen stefani
ME:people who aren't kids like to like pop music in an ironic way. Like the way a lot of people like Busted. They like them but theres an element of laughing at them too. You don't get people liking them and discussing the merits of their music seriously
ME:gwen stefani's album is mostly rubbish
Me:kylie has had a great long career, you can't really compare her with rachel stevens. But she was lucky to have amazing songwriters on her last album and she is very iconic
cellar door says:ok yes i would agree gwen stefanis album is not gd
ME:'Cool' is not even in the same league as most of the stuff on rachel stevens latest album
cellar door says:i do see what you mean
cellar door says:maybe i dont hear it the same way you do
ME:and a lot of people call it manufatured music. as if thats a terrible thing
ME:like the song just wrote itself, which is ridiculous, someone somewhere wrote the thing
ME:its been happening since the 60s with soul music. Half of Otis Reddings first album was covers.
cellar door says:yeah that is true, its similar to people who dont like mainstream music
ME:the art of interpretation is misrepresented in 21st century pop music criticism.
ME:people like to liek their little rock bands and indie bands but the same principals apply
ME:the record company tells them what songs to record, and who is producing themME:people kid themselves if they thing bands have a singular control on their output
cellar door says:you have a point, but you must understand i dont dislike rachel stevens music cos its her, i just havnt found anything i particular like
ME:yeah i know, but most people dislike her, or because she is 'manufactured'. Its annoying because I think this is one of the best albums of the year and it sold a ridiculous amount of records and she will probably get dropped from her label because of it.
ME:If a rock band makes a good album they get rewarded with stadium tours, great sales and more albums.

Oh yeah, this is certainly entirely borne out by history innit.

Nah, most of the time ILM is full of jaded self-important wankers (this makes it sound like i'm talking about you, i'm not). This is what I think. I really enjoy that album and can't understand why its not at least popular in the charts.

I mean when they make an album that is deemed good by the music press. Case in point: Kaiser Chiefs.
I read plenty of great reviews for Rachel Stevens. But her sales are bad, she might not get to make another album and well she probably wouldn't tour much anyway.

I liked silly girly pop music long before I discovered ILM. I was buying Shangri-Las vinyl comps in the 80s, for chrissakes.

I overcome the Papist/Plymouth Rockist dichotomy by thinking of everything as Pop.

Whoa, popism (or whatever). I like Kylie plenty in a non-ironic way--and I think Rachel Stevens is boring, again in a non-ironic way. It's not the case that everyone who doesn't share your taste is part of a vast ironic rockist conspiracy; it's just that, for whatever reason, they dig the sound of "Cool" more than "Some Girls." This is certainly the case with me. I love the Gwen album and I'll take "Made of Glass" over any Rachel Stevens song, and it has nothing to do with any of this 'anti-manufactured-pop' straw-man idea.

Based on her underwhelming album sales, I'd say that she's just a secret, period.
