I can't decide which I like better. You can sit and listen to Ms. Willams do "free" or rock out to a live version of "tonight is the night" by Ms Wright. Assistance please!

"let's hear it for there boy " vs "save the best 'til last"?

I prefer Betty Wright because I prefer southern soul in general. Pitting her against some post-disco era singer like Deniece Williams is SO apples-and-oranges, like comparing Foghat to the Sex Pistols.

Deniece is the angel on the left shoulder wanting to save herself, Betty is the devil on the right shoulder saying tonight is the night.

I'll take Betty.

I saw her once on a soul-revival show with . . . was that one the Delfonics and Johnnie Taylor? I believe it was. She's great. "Clean Up Woman," "Shoorah Shoorah," etc. Sweet stuff.

No relation, by the way.

Philly Soul VS Miami Sound, sorta...both fed into disco

my albs pix would be Danger High Voltage for Betty and Deniece Williams' classic pair w/producer Thom Bell:Niecey(her peak) and the lesser My Melody.

I heart "Let's Hear It For The Boy" and "Clean Up Woman" equally so it's a draw. Alfred Soto to thread!

Thanks for the responses guys. lol foghat and sex pistols?

I dunno, except when i'm drunk at a wedding and the black dj gets a request from me for anything off "Here comes Niecy," theres strange looks.

Both artists had hits, but white people aren't supposed to know about anything further. I'm not tryin to be racist, its just worth a good laugh because some of these songs are so obscure. I love these two.

hydrallus (hydraulis2), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I only know Betty. And I take it that Denise is the real way to spell it?

js (honestengine), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

you take it wrong.

its spelled deniece williams, thus the album entitled "This Is Niecy"

"Let's Hear For The Boy" is so bloody classic. I hate using "sweet" as a compliment but Deniece's voice is seductive enough (she's like your big sister confiding her secret crush) to make the sight of Kevin Bacon dancing equally fetching.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm fully engorged!

fourteen years pass...

RIP Betty Wright. What a career (I only was aware of about 25% of it, tops):

love this little detail:

In 1992, Wright sued the producers behind Color Me Badd's breakthrough hit, "I Wanna Sex You Up", after claiming they used the sample of her live version without clearance and without permission, and sued for royalties. Wright won her case, winning 35 percent of royalties for writing the song.

The bassline, chord structure and the "I know you not gonna sing that song!" soundbite are sampled from Betty Wright's "Tonight is the Night."

(another lousy old thread title btw, but it’s the only Betty Wright thread on ILM)

^^^ yeah, I posted that clip on FB when I heard the news. She’s mainly known for “Clean Up Woman,” and understandably so, that groove is absolutely undeniable. But “Shoorah” is fantastic too, written by the great Allen Toussaint. Never understood why it didn’t make the US pop chart.

I spent part of yesterday digging through her lesser hits, and there were some great ones, like “Slip and Do It.” https://youtu.be/SaaVs1PD-r8
