Black metal has it's fucking Exile on Main Street. And it's from the good ol' US of A. First Eminem, now this??

Holy shit.

Contender for album of the year. GO GET IT!

Roger, Monday, 14 November 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

souns intriguing, is the band called Twilight? Who plays in it? the usual SL suspects?

rizzx, Monday, 14 November 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

The band is called Twilight and so is the album, but O'Malley and Anderson only appear on the Thank You list! It's a supergroup of sorts - Wrest from Leviathan, Malefic from Xasthur...all Americans to my knowledge. Total earth shaking reverb-overdosed black metal insanity!

roger, Monday, 14 November 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

must be a winner then. i really like the Taake album, my favourite metal release this year but this seems promising!

rizzx, Monday, 14 November 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't know much about southern lord apart from an earth cd and two suno))) cds....is twilight "doom" as well or is black metal different? sorry i'm an idiot, i'm just starting to get into this sort of stuff

buyabiznatch (buyabiznatch), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Sounds good. I'll have to dig for this when I hit the store for new releases tomorrow. I think the last death/black metal release I picked up was a Bloodbath album, and that was a couple years ago.

First Eminem, now this??

Um... Eminem? Am I missing the connection here, or just the sarcasm?

Josh Witkowski (braineater), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

how does black metal differ from doom metal? faster? more treble?

petesmith (plsmith), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

"Holy Crap"? More like Total Crap.

Just kidding (not really).

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Jeez.

Th Eminem connection was my clever way of comparing "good" American black metal to "successful" whiteboy rap.

Doom metal - slow. black metal - usually fast. Nothing alike. Go google a black metal faq or something, that oughta help.

roger, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Better yet, search for OPETH on ILM...

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Southern Lord bands need to burn less ganja and more churches.

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Nor you.

Point = if you think Obituary ain't Black/Death metal, then you are probably a Korn fan, so, like, have fun with that and stuff.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

?

you're kidding right? death and black metal are 2 surprisingly different styles but if u cant see that you're probably a Korn fan, so, like, have fun etc

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Wow, you really think that? Wow...

Nevermind that, this album is pretty rubbish.

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm not into BM at all but I checked this and the Lurker Of Chalice albums out and I preferred the latter.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

"The Chalice Of Malice" would have been a better band name.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

I can't remember an ILM thread riddled with more misinformed posts, and that's saying a helluva lot.

Obituary is lame, and about as black metal as REO Speedwagon. Nice fucking sneakers, dickwad.

roger, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Dickwad, huh?

Th Eminem connection was my clever way of comparing "good" American black metal to "successful" whiteboy rap.

Roger, please 10-4 some of this:

Find threads from I Love Music, containing "obituary" and "death".

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

again, you lost me.

It's really not even opinion - Americans are not known for producing great black metal. Prior to Eminem's rise to fame, a successful (that means not 3rd Bass) white rapper was a complete anomoly. The times they are a-changin,' is all I'm saying here. What exactly don't you understand? I mean, aside from the difference between Carcass and Burzum?

roger, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, da Beastie Boys must not be considered rapperz in Eurrrrope...

Dude, you got tha gas face!

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Beastie Boys? Wow, you're even less informed about hip hop than you are about metal. Beastie Boys aren't considered 'rappers' by anyone but corny indie fucks.

I'm from New York, by the way. You know - the birthplace of hip hop. But hey man whatever.

roger, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Banana Nutrament to thread to knock some sense into this discussion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

i still prefer Taake over this one. Although the first track sounds awesome. reverbalicious!

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

this thread is impossible. and opeth are death prog.

that's european propaganda, goddamit!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

And the finest of it.
Shame we don't actually produce great, or even good, black metal in Norway either. Yet our "scene" still seems to think it's relevant.

Nihilicious (Øystein), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

This is a fun thread. I guess. My thoughts:

-Twilight = fun for about 5 minutes, then you start scrounging for another CD

-Black Metal/Doom Metal: Darkthrone, Taake, Burzum, et al, have a lot of "doomy" moments. But then again, I think calling My Dying Bride "doom" is an abomination.

-Iberian Penninsula, France, and Greece are producing all the good black metal right now

-Can everyone just stop talking about Opeth? Period? They're like Motorhead, in that they have one song and play it over and over, but unlike Motorhead, their song isn't very good. I mean, pushing boundaries and trying something new is good as long as you don't, you know, stagnate and keep saying you're innovating. And talk shit about other bands who are just as stagnant as you because you see them as stagnant, while lacking any self awareness.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Which Opeth song would that be?

nancyboy (nancyboy), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

The same one they retitle and play over and over again on every album they've ever done. You know, the one that starts off metal, then they do acoustic, then back to metal again, then to acoustic, then finally back to metal to finish. It lasts about 15 minutes long, and they repeat it 6 times to put out a disc. Except when they decide that just doing straight 70s prog worship is their goal, in which case they just do that.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

This thread sucks. So does Twilight. Check out Make a Change... Kill Yourself's self-titled album. Samples are up on the Aquarius site. It's great stuff. More Lurker of Chalice pseudo BM, but I'm not a huge BM fan, so take that with a grain of salt I guess.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Opeth due have a fondness for acoustic/orchestral interludes, no doubt, but that's what they're ALL ABOUT. I used to cringe at those parts, but now I LOVE that shit. And yeah, it's very proggy (DUH).

I would recommend the following to those still in doubt:

"The Leper Affinity" and "Blackwater Park", Blackwater Park
"The Moor" and "Godhead's Lament", Still Life
"Wreath" and "Deliverance", Deliverance
