Hooray!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Hard to think of the DFA label/production team having a “golden age” this soon into their history, but surely the double gut-punches of “Losing My Edge” and “Beat Connection” will qualify when it is all said and done.

Hell yeah. In fact that's all I ever bought and all you'll ever need by DFA, so it's nice to have them on either side of the same 12". House of Jealous Lovers is only anecdotally funny/interesting because he's screaming. As for the rest OMGWTgoth, ewww

blunt (blunt), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Here, as static rumbles to a breakfast tea morning, subtle chimes step into the gap. Thom seems to ghost-ride over the proceedings, humming through his dystopic predator-prey fears as the beat rusts around the edges and chains are drawn out of the bricked torchlight and people, somebody somebody and nobody hears, are strapped into the future. This is a morn without saviour, and a scavenger’s feast, told past the fears of the summoned. You can’t help but see the garbage eyes of Newt from Aliens in this song’s tale. Hide, keep your eyes open, and love the clammy skin that is your life again."

Huh?

Nigel (Nigel), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but "Starla" is brilliant!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 14 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

In fact the first thing I thought before clicking on the link was "I wonder if "Starla" is mentioned anywhere." And there it was! Right before my eyes!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 14 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Had I known nobody was covering "Beat My Guest" I might have contributed.

'Twan (miccio), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

"Press Darlings" is better than "Beat my Guest" and I would've suggested it, if I'd got round to suggesting things.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't this be a great jumping off point for another in the CDR-Go! series?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Glad to see Pulp mentioned, but "Ansaphone" is nowhere near their best b-side.

D. Bachyrycz, Monday, 14 November 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations and welcome to the world of 'your opinion is not mine.' You may find this a strange, unsettling realm, but fear not, you will get used to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

don't get pissy ned!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Get the new cuddly Ned instead!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

man i love "i'll be around." now i want to go home and listen. maybe some four tops too. but i'm stuck here for a bit longer.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm well aware of the said realm, Ned; it's why I, well, posted my opinion.

D. Bachyrycz, Monday, 14 November 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Yus, but you see, the unspoken corollary is -- what do you think IS their best B-side? And why?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Your right Ned, but you see I'm very, very lazy. : ) Give me time, and I shall do my best.

(My gut points me in the pre-DC direction, e.g. "Seconds", "Street Lites", "Inside Susan".)

D. Bachyrycz, Monday, 14 November 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

You know, I'd actually listen to "Starla" today if I could find it.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

HEY REAL ORIGINAL IDEA FOR CONTENT THERE GUYS

almost as original as pitchfork's worst album covers evah

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

I would agree. "Seconds" is the one that made me seek out all of their singles. It's... astonishing. (Cuddly Ned, eh? Someone's been reading their own press Wikipedia entry.)

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I LUV ME

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

If you think this is the end of the Smashing Pumpkins b-side love this week just you wait.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

... : / ?

sonore (sonore), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Pearl Jam are a terrific B-sides band (the fact that they tastefully cover so many tried and true staples doesn’t hurt), and the proof’s in the pudding with “Yellow Ledbetter,” probably the most well-known song on this list.

yes, on a list that contains "I'll Be Around," "King Tubby's Meets Rockers Uptown," "Unbelievable," and "Rain," it's certainly the best-known (cough).

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Well, overlooking "Rain" was a mistake, and for that I apologize. I feel like it still stacks up just fine against the rest though. (Aren't you from Seattle? If so, wouldn't this and everything else PJ did be inescapable?)

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

cmon now. "Standing Here" is clearly the best Stone Roses bside... perhaps their finest moment overall.

Quinn (quinn), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Now you've flipped the record over
You're not sure what you will find
Well now's the time that you'll be made aware
That we didn't spend much time on this
We didn't think you'd mind
And if you do
It's too late now
And we don't care

It's another boring B-side
Another load of tatt
It has no redeeming features
And we're really proud of that
If the A-side makes a hit
Then we don't care if this is missed
'cause the sooner that we finish it
The sooner we get... home
Very very very very very very boring
Very very very very very very boring

(spoken)
Blimey, goes on a bit, doesn't it?

Now you've listened to it this far
But you probably won't again
So we'll be taking even less care from now on (clang)
(Off tone) The singing might go off a bit
And the words don't have to rhyme
(Voiceover) And there's no line here

It's another boring B-side
Another load of tatt
It has no redeeming features
And we're really proud of that
You're listening to the product of
Considerable neglect
But for a lousy one pound eighty
Tell me what did you expect?
It's another boring B-side
It's another boring B-side
It's another boring B-side
Very very very very very very boring
Very very very very very very boring
Very very very very very very boring
Very very very very very very boring

(look, it seemed funny when I was 12 okay?)

Slooshy sloshy slooshy sloshy (fandango), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

I liked it. Biggest omission was Sinatra's Fool to Want You with 50's novelty track as the A-side. I personally would've picked Slow Grafitti for the Belle track and another Pulp and Beatle one, but those are personal preferences.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

cmon now. "Standing Here" is clearly the best Stone Roses bside... perhaps their finest moment overall.

-- Quinn (quinn.omor...), Today 7:48 AM. (quinn) (later)

I was gonna do "Standing Here" until the very last minute when i changed my mind, partly because I've already written about it on Stylus in the dim and distant past.

MOD REQUEST - Can we please get rid of Ex Machina's fucking awful shitting Pikachu gif which is spread all across my page unless I block Photobucket images, which i don't want to have to do as I use Photobucket myself?

Also Ex Machina (John Williams?) fuck off and die.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

if you think thats a good b-side well you havent heard the latest "cutting" from Esteban Buttez & The Scottish Frozen Pizzas!!!

Yo yo yo
From LA to Adelaide
I be rappin on tha B-side
On the back of buffalo hide

Yo, this is tha B-side
We wanted to leave it blank
God, knows we really tried
We even considered a 12" mix

But the record company
They be telling me
Pitchfork, Stylus, ILXor
They be writing listings

Yo, a Top 100 B-Sides List they said
(That's all the Internet nerds read)
Yo, a Top 100 Rare Songs List they said
(That's all the Internet nerds write)
Yo, a Top 100 Songs About Songs List they said
(That's all the Internet nerds comprehend)

And the man in the suit said
"Esteban, if yo cant pull dat shit,
then you'll have to see your crankin records
for a thousand dollars or more"

That why I be recordin this song
Word out, yo

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

oasis bsides are better than the singles but blurs aren't.

until michael jackson did " shout " a b-side to "cry" he did no non album b-sides.

retrogurl, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

Aren't you from Seattle? If so, wouldn't this and everything else PJ did be inescapable?

yes, I live in Seattle. no, Pearl Jam are not at all inescapable, here or elsewhere. and no, "I'll Be Around" is far, far better-known than the PJ song in question (which I haven't heard).

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Henry Miller I know full-well that you have a big softspot for Embrace and probably the Pumpkins too, you dodgy lapsed indieist.

i have NEVER liked the pumpkins. you may have me on the other count, tho.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Madonna's "Into the Groove" first appeared as the b-side to "Angel." Just wanted to point that out, etc..

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, Jeane>Asleep. Although I haven't heard Asleep in ages so maybe I'm wrong. They got all the bands right.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

"I'll Be Around" is definitely better known than "Yellow Ledbetter" -- but one could make a case for "YL" being the second-best known song on the list. I did receive plenty of radio airplay in the mid-90s.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

*It* did ... (obv)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

You're right, strongo's ghost — it should've read "By Ned Raggett and Stylus Staff"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, what else would you call 'em?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I'll Be Around" is definitely better known than "Yellow Ledbetter"

I guess it's a regional phenomenon. I've never heard this song in my lfe, but I still hear "Yellow Ledbetter."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Really, Alf? "Whenever you want me, I'll be there / Whenever you need me, I'll be there / I'll be around." I feel like it's been used in, like, long-distance commercials.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

I got de-listed from Stylus for slackage. Am I the only one ever?

(And I would have picked some old Glen Campbell shit so it's just as well I wasn't part of this.)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I think it was used in a Chevy commercial, too. Could be wrong. In any case, my wording was too strong -- I just wanted to reiterate that "YL" awfully well known for a b-side. I mean Pearl Jam's recent singles never go anywhere (justifiably so, they haven't been very good).

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one ever?

I doubt it. I do miss reading your stuff, though, Matt.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only person who hears the first half of "Laughing Stock" as a knock at the Doors?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

If you HAVE to include a Smashing Pumpkins b-side, surely it needs to be 'Believe'...

Shatner's Basoon, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I like this list okay, but the pedant in me wants to know why, if they're not counting "tunes that were included on an album at a later date," that "Method Man" counts. Also, how was it a "failed launch pad"? That went over my head.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

If you HAVE to include a Smashing Pumpkins b-side, surely it needs to be 'Believe'...

It came to mind.

Um... hmmm... yeah... Basically because I wanted to. Technically it's not the exact same mix though, is it? I'm a contrary bugger.

what's the deal with the sylus singles cru? where did all the ilx/ft lot go?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Speaking for myself, it was a lot of work to sustain on a weekly basis... around 15 tracks a week to source, download/stream, play at least 4 times each, research and write about (usually 3 to 4 hour sessions on Sunday afternoons). So I resigned.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)
