In case desperate newsjunkies couldn't navigate the broken link on Pitchfork, here's their review of Vertically Challenged. Overly savage? No mention of the DVD?

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/l/lady-sovereign/vertically-challenged.shtml

Pitchfork apparently thinks this is late-breaking news, though: Indie Zines in Danger Due to Distribution Problems

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

reviewer knows slang

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

is she really signed to Def Jam? I keep seeing that implied everywhere but I'm not sure if my disbelief is wishful thinking.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me or is the use of "zine" a little wrong in that distribution problems article too? I think of the self-published small press stuff usually, but they're talking about widely-distributed magazines..

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty lazy reporting, since the Chicago Reader delivered the same story with the same sources two weeks ago.

Nick Sylvester's "Hoodie" track review was comically ignorant:

"For a second I'll be the fashion police," Sov starts, and so will I: What the fuck is she thinking? First "9-5", that blowing-up omg! single everybody's technically supposed to like because (1) it's de-grimed, de-rapified, toothless pap, and (2) Sov's so fucking alt, isn't she now, talking half-assed bunk on all the collars and ties. Now this? What is this shit?

The same lame and bald, strictly identity-building crock, actually. Sov doesn't rap nimble flipping hackney, instead sing-songing the same goddamn swung-eighths flow over one of those "fun" rock-vibed, dancehall-vibed boogie bounces that will never serve her as well as the harder, grimier beats (check the Mizz Beats Remix). The best line we get is, "So I was up in this trendy bar mingling/ My keys around my neck were jingling/ And you was looking at me like it was my bliiiiiiiiiiiing!"-- 10 seconds wasted just to set up a Missy freak-on ref she's made more efficiently a thousand times before.

I have no interest in turning my back on Sov. Live she's so captivating, so dominant-- so aware that in-studio she can be an brilliant rapper but on-stage she needs to be a brilliant rapper and entertainer. But when shit's as dumbed down as this-- so willfully inconsequential as a cartoonish theme song for an even more cartoonish referendum to save the hooded sweatshirt from a UK ban-- I wonder what's happening in the board rooms. Let's put it this way: I can't see Jay-Z jumping on this one."

whu?, Monday, 14 November 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

"a thousand times before"? What has she released, like 11 songs and zero actual albums? That whole thing smacks of the worst kind of "she's so last spring" nonsense. Plus also "9-5" is great, wtf? It's the second-best song called "9 to 5" ever.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

is she really signed to Def Jam?

She's signed to the Island Def Jam Music Group. So are Bon Jovi. Lady Sovereign is not on Def Jam.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Right now I'm stuck on one line of "Shhh!": "Here comes the press!!/ Nuva damn reporter/ Obsessed wid my disorder/ Diagnosis please whats wrong wiv her Bill? She's ill." Give shit interviews, fine, but on wax don't stamp yourself out. Please?

He left out the best part of that line, the retort: "Nah, she's sick!"

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Pitchfork reviews give me a headache; all that flashy language chopped up and spit out like a recent Tony Scott movie or something.

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Actually, she's signed to Def Jam Left, Jay-Z's new imprint for, well, hip-hop acts who aren't expected to sell so much. The Roots have signed to it as well (their label debut is due out next spring). Jigga apparently LOVES Lady Sov.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Of course he does, because she's great. I don't get this whole "she's gone soft" bit. There's weird kind of grime puritanism going on there.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

The EP is kind of an okay tide me over (it's nice to have all these tracks in a handy little package, but it's not like there is anything NEW on there that you absolutely have to have--although the Poirier remix is good.) The DVD is fun though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

"It was better before we wrote about it" is an awesome stance to take when writing about music.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Uh, could someone lock this thread or edit the last post? I'm not at work but I don't think those who are want cock all over the screen.

telephone thing, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

oh i think we'll let them be

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Umm I don't know how I feel about the review, but y'all are almost certainly misreading it -- is anyone seriously gonna argue that Sov's production hasn't at least kinda chilled its way out into more of a happy bubblegum-humor deal than the seemingly sparkier first singles? (Personally I don't think that's necessarily a terrible thing, but that seems to be what he's pointing out, not that Sov is "last year" or something.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, by "production" there I mean something like "output," not the sound or beats or anything. Though that, a little bit, too.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

also there's the fundamental fallacy in assuming someone's opinion as written is a "stance."

"you don't mean that!"
"yes i do!"
"uh... no you don't!"

-- nabisco (--...), November 14th, 2005.

I think people are reacting to the Pitchfork reviewer (and others) treating every Lady Sovereign release as a referendum on her entire career. Which, as pointed out above, has hardly started. I don't think there's anything particularly happy and bubblegum about Vertically Challenged The PF reviewer admits as much, but seems to hold "9 to 5" against her. Please review the CD you're ostensibly reviewing instead of trying to address the to-the-minute zeitgeist of grime nation.

"Random" and "Ch-Ching" are two of the best singles of the past couple of years, and Sov recorded boys vs. girls posse cut "The Battle" and "A Little Bit of Shhh!" before "Ch-Ching", so they don't count (though they're great and on here, with meh remix filler too). She has rap knees on their heads-- why jump shark? To be frank I don't know what the fuck's going on here, who Sov's talking to, why she's holding back on us.

Okay, this EP contains two of the best singles of the past couple of years, finally released in the US (one can only assume "She has rap knees on their heads" should be "She has rap heads on their knees") - but wait, she's holding back on us. That little bitch. For some reason, "Ch-Ching" and "The Battle" don't count (though they're great...). Huh?

Obviously this release is a teaser for her US tour, with a future full length in the works. Maybe "Sad Arse Strippah", "Tango", and "Blah Blah Blah" will be on it, maybe not. But I'm sure when it's released the reviewers will be alternately smug and petulant about what she releases... and about when it's released... and about what label it's on...

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Can't we have the grimy Sov and the pop Sov? I like both, and I want a goddamned album already.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I just don't get when she was ever not sparkly pop. "A Little Bit of Shhh" is pop as hell. I don't know, it just seems like a painfully stereotypical case of "I liked her early stuff better, when she was underground." Anyway, I'm looking forward to buying Vertically Challenged so that I can finally pay her money for something apart from whatever tiny cut she got from Run the Road.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

I assumed rap knees on their heads waslike a wrestling hold.

jcartledge (jcartledge), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

In other news, the "OH MY GOD, PIANOS!!!" bit in "Shhh!!!" continues to bring a smile to my face.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 18 November 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

"Pitchfork Nick Sylvester reviews give me a headache; all that flashy language chopped up and spit out like a recent Tony Scott movie or something."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 18 November 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the "Pianos!!!" thing is what pushed that song to the top of my '04 singles list.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 19 November 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm still digging

This shit's hot
Where the sniffer dogs
Let's get random
Zagga zagga zagga zog

And I have taken to randomly yelling out "zagga zagga zagga zog!", much to the chagrin of those who surround me.

Edward III (edward iii), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Zagga zagga zagga ZOG?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

That's right, Lady Sovereign's an anti-semite.

Edward III (edward iii), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure she's just getting random, but I can't hear that syllable without thinking of hateful wackos.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

I guess she should've stuck with the classic "Zigga zig zig!"
