Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 14 November 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

petesmith (plsmith), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

1. Suzuki because he makes even less sense than Mooney
2. I can't even remember what the heck "Thief" sounds like so I guess "Soul Desert" takes it
3. "Halleuwah", no contest
4. Yes please
5. 1972 Cologne show: Damo's head completely covered with long black hair a la every Japanese horror film, his body twitching spasmodically
6. Only had dim sum once, whereas I have ingested too many greasy diner breakfasts - so I will be eating more dim sum thanks to you reminding me of its existence
7. Haven't heard it, but now I want to

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

8. What is the worst Can song? I'm thinking "Hoolah Hoolah"

Did you mean "Thief" on Delay 1968 or Rite Time?

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

1. tie
2. "Thief," I think
3. "Halleluwah," "Yoo Doo Right," "Mother Sky"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

1. i can't take sides
2. "soul desert"
3. "mother sky" wins a close tie with the other two
4. i'd like to hear both
5. long hair always wins
6. diner breakfast
7. haven't heard it!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

1 suzuki
2 thief
3 three-way tie (for first)
4 suzuki sings mooney
5 long hair

7 now that you mention it, yes, it does a bit

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Monster Movie is my favorite Can so I'm going to have to go with Mooney. There's my forceful argument.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

1. suzuki.
2. "soul desert"!!!
3. "mother sky" just beats the others by a nose.
4. suzuki sings mooney.
5. damo's long hair.
6. diner breakfast. I THINK WE'RE GETTING A TOUCH OFF-TOPIC AT THIS POINT THOUGH.
7. it does a little, it's all in that synth sound I think.
8. I an thinking it'd have to be something off rite time, however I've never heard it. (despite it being by far the most well-stocked can release in melbourne record shops up until the remasters started coming out.)

revolting upstairs (haitch), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

1. suzuki
2. these are about even
3. "mother sky"
4. suzuki singing all the mooney songs
5. damo's long hair

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

carly (carly), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

naw not really.

feel free to add more questions

8. czukay's handlebar vs. schmidt's chainmail?

Answers:
1. Can't separate 'em.... but I suppose, Mooney, but only because he doesn't seem to get the same levels of hero worship as Damo, which he absolutely deserves to!
2. "Thief" - one of my fave Malc numbers
3. "Yoo Doo Right"
4. I think Damo would probably be better at Malcolm's songs than vice versa.
5. It has to be long
6. What albums are these on?
7. Never heard it
8. Probably something off the first side of "Out of Reach" or an "EFS" (tho that's too easy)

Question:
9. Rosko Gee vs. Reebop Kwaku Baah

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

1. Suzuki
2. THIEF
3. Mama Se, Mama Sa, Mama Skysky
4. Damo doin' the Malc
5. Unquestionably long
6. Dim sum. mmm, dim sum.
7. Yeah sorta, well the keys sound just like the spoon synth but spoon's got a lot more rhythmic dynamism, broadcast's got the drooooooooone

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

1)mooney..cause I heard he had to leave the band cause in one concert he found hmself trapped in the phrase "upstairs..downstairs..." and couldnt stop. ( if you know this not to be true..please dont ruin my illusion)

2) not heard either.

3) yoo doo right then Hallelewah then mother sky

4) suzuki singing mooney

5)long hair

6) greasy SPOON breakfast

7) YSI??? please????

danny boy, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

i find that when i listen to the broadcast song, i always think about spoon. i guess it mostly is the synth sound, but the tempo/mood/cryptic lyrics, etc etc also do something.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

neat thread.

1. suzuki
2. "soul desert"
3. "mother sky"
4. suzuki singing all the mooney songs
5. damo's long hair
6. dim sum
7. i really dislike that band

roger, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

how about "least favorite can song from D68/MM/sdtrks/TM/EB/FD/SOB," since everyone seems to just auto-refer to rite time or landed or out of reach or something when it's left open?

no broadcast fan, rog?

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

There's no synth on "Spoon" tho

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

ok - organ.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

well keys or whatever then

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Least favourite song on respective albums:

Monster Movie - "Mary Mary So Contrary"
Delay 1968 - "Man Named Joe" (by a mile)
Soundtracks - "Deadlock" (ditto)
Tago Mago - "Peking O"
Ege Bamyasi - "Soup"
Future Days - "Bel Air"
Soon Over Babaluma - "Splash"
Landed - "Red Hot Indians"
Unlimited Edition - on of the "EFS" trax, probably that jazzy one
Flowmotion - "Flow Motion" or "Smoke"
Saw Delight - "Animal Waves" (but only because it's too long)
Out of Reach - one of the trax on Side 1, can't remember the titles
Can - "Can Can"
Rite Time - "Give the Drummer Some"

Quite easy because Can had a tendency to slip the odd stinker on to their albums

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

i'd sub "she brings the rain" for "deadlock" but otherwise that's exactly my ranking too (well, haven't heard anything after babaluma, save for unlimited edition, but yeah other than that).

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

sorry, what i meant was "your single least favorite element from the set P{D68,MM,sdtrks,TM,EB,FD,SOB}."

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

...uhhhhhhh, run that one by me again

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

The Broadcast track reminds me of "Father Cannot Yell", with that piercing organ line.

Brakhage (brakhage), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

pete you fucking mathemagician

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

like - name the ONE song that is your least favorite, from any of those albums. like, your least favorite of your least favorites list.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh right! I'm tempted to say "Bel Air" but I like bits of that song, I just hate the whole

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

probably peking o for me

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

mine is probably "she brings the rain," but "aumgn" and "soup" are real close.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Well each to his own, but "She Brings the Rain" is brilliant!

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

1. Damo
2. -
3. If I really must choose, it's Halleluwah
4. Mooney singing Suzuki
5. long hair
6. dim sum by a mile
7. Not at all

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

i have to be in a very particular mood to enjoy it.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I'll listen to Holger Czukay records instead of all.

hydrallus (hydraulis2), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

"mary mary so contrary" usually gets skipped at my house. musically OKish, but c'mon, you're just singing a nursery rhyme malcolm, must try harder.

revolting upstairs (haitch), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

1. suzuki
2. "thief"
3. whichever one i listened to most recently
4. suzuki singing all the mooney songs
5. damo's long hair

willem (willem), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

8. artwork: monster movie vs. ege bamyasi (since tago mago pwns anyway)

willem (willem), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

galactus!!!

(good to see you here, willem!)

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

(hi pete :-))

haha, i know next to nothing about comics, so galactus is an eye-opener for me! i just assumed it was a 'superhero' made out of... cans. hence the TS with ege bamyasi.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

soon over babaluma might have my favorite can cover, actually.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

CAN FANS:

7:41 vs 10:33 in "Mother Sky" (timing based on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ICsoINapqs version, could be different than my mp3 version but you know which two points i'm talking about if you know the song)

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Friday, 7 February 2014 22:25 (twelve years ago)

for me, i think i'm gonna have to go with the first one because it kicks off so much major action in the song
the second one definitely marks the coming of a significant second wind, but the first one is where the song really gets started.

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Friday, 7 February 2014 23:21 (twelve years ago)

Thanks, keep 'em coming. Good to know this is still on the 'Tube: Can plus Tim Hardin's surprisingly agile lumberjack intonations, eventually: (post Damo, they were kinda seeing how it might go with other voices) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G_nQQROudw

dow, Friday, 7 February 2014 23:30 (twelve years ago)

a little more of that around here and there, I think (but I'm an RIAApocalypse download wimp now)

dow, Friday, 7 February 2014 23:31 (twelve years ago)
