never seen any mentions of Bix here, i don't think. where do you place Bix in the scheme of things and that. evaluation of beiderbecke back catalogue? a good starting point? discussion?

I have to say I'm only a little familiar with his horn playing, but his biography was possibly the most entertaining entertainment bio I've read... that guy raged harder than Black Sabbath.

bix was the bomb. in an era dominated by armstrong flashiness, bix dared to be sensitive. could this cat be the first emo dude? he looks the part...

"In A Mist" ...oh this isn't an OPO/POO!/TCBOO thread? (that's his piano piece - a fine one, too!)

Paul, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight years pass...

I just found out that he did piano compositions and Ted Goia's description of them makes them sound like Satie or "Fleur Africaine."

Anyone heard them?

bamcquern, Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

sure, "in a mist"? it's lovely.
PS - I'm not the same "tyler" above who asked "could this cat be the first emo dude?" at least i hope I'm not the same tyler.

hmm, that video *may* be slightly nsfw? in a kinda old timey way?

tylerw, Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks. I remember Goia talking about that one.

This thread is so short and yet when I skimmed it I missed Paul's mention.

bamcquern, Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's too bad he didn't live long enough to do some more piano stuff - i think there are just a handful of other examples.

tylerw, Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

A: Bix Beiderbecke
Q: What do you say to ward off a big spider?

Hideous Lump, Friday, 30 July 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

The first time I heard someone say his name in conversation, I thought he was saying "Big Spider-back." It didn't help that the person saying it had asthma and tended to have a very nasal voice. Otherwise, I have nothing to add.

Armstrong's only real rival on the horn in the 20s (although Bix played cornet, not trumpet). Gorgeous tone, wonderfully understated phrasing and beautifully constructed solos (leading one to wonder what's being improvised and what's not). "Singin' the Blues" is one of the crown jewels of early jazz.
