how much do those suckers go for?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

i think the going rate in nyc for one in decent shape is $700 or $800, maybe a bit more. no idea what they go for anywhere else.

are there any reasonable emulations?

some people like native instrument's elektrik piano plugin (around $150), which gets you a wurlitzer, a rhodes (two rhodes, actually) and a clavinet. i haven't heard it enough to judge.

or for the price of about two actual wurlitzers you can get the nord electro 2 keyboard, which simulates a wurli, a rhodes, a clavinet, a yamaha electric grand and an organ (B3, i think) quite fantastically.

if you can find a roland JV 80 or 90 with the "sounds of the 60's and 70's" expansion card, it has really good rhodes and wurli sounds in there.

I once used that fantastic Wurlie crunch courtesy of someone who had put lines on the net. They were distributed with a version of Cool Edit Pro and, boy, did they sound good.

The E-mu proteus 2000 module has a good set of wurlitzer multisamples, the "vintage pro" add-on card (or the closeley related vintage pro module) has some slightly better ones. If you have access to an E-mu EOS sampler (eg e6400, e5000, eIV etc) there is a sample CD called Wizoo "Magnetica" which has a great set, as well as Rhodes and clavi samples, I picked the CD up new for 10 uk pounds, which is pretty cheap.

There's also the Lounge Lizard softsynth package from Applied Acoustics (makers of Tassman and other delights); it emulates the Rhodes and many other electric pianos, great sounds and lots of parameters to manipulate.

Hi

If you have a vst plugin, you can download this elec piano for a dollar:

Super Wurly

You'll laugh when you hear the demo.
