Haven't thought about these guys in years. I remember really liking those first two albums back in the day. What say the hive mind? How has "Typical American" aged?

a complete DUD. I lived in Philly when those first two albums were released. A lot of hype since they were signed to Ruffhouse (who momentarily even tried to go alternarock by signing the even worse Dandelion) I didn't like them the Goates then (bad Cypress Hill/Beastie Boys wannabes with weak production and even weaker mic skills) so I can't imagine them ageing well. File next to G Love and the Special Sauce.

Ouch! But i can definitely see where you're coming from re: the rhyme skills. Still, I thought the bassline on "Typical American" was pretty cool!

The days when Joe the Butcher was just an engineer, and Scott Storch was just a keyboard session man ended right around the time of this suck ass pile of crap.

Definately dud. Frat-rap. Although i know a lot of people who bumped "tricks of the shade" when it came out but quickly denied ever bumping it when "the chronic" really started hitting.

Someone remind me about the guido song or skit. I recall that being funny. Or maybe it was the reaction from my Italian friend who had the album i found funny.

I loved this record in high school and immediately afterward, thought it was great, and pulled it out last year and played it when a friend was over. I think we lasted 10 songs before calling it off. Christ, what was I thinking?!

however, it does deserve a place in history for being perhaps the only album on earth where the skits are uniformly better than the songs!

I completely fell for the hype in the UK music press over "Tricks Of The Shade". Duuuuuuuud!

I disagree, although it's not on the classic status, it was much better then a ton of stuff at the time. it's far from a dud. although there are a few tracks which are stuck in the substance puffing, but there we're other tracks on equal footing to the other political minded groups f the time, Coup or Paris maybe even P.E. I wouldn't MC Hanger-Head this album.

I bought 2 12"s Tuesday just on all the positive things I'd heard -- "Typical American" and something else. I will be getting rid of them this weekend.

Funny.. all the reviews here hatin'. This is actually my favorite hip-hop ALBUM of all time, kinda like a nightmarish Paul's Boutique. I remember I got it when it first came out on a whim. Blazed up a philly blunt (ahhh, the good old days!), put this joint on and proceeded to have my mind blown. I've been producing hip-hop for about 12 years now, and I still wish I could put something this good together..

five months pass...
I thought the Goats were great, different and Tricks of the Shade definetely travels well through time. The story line of Tricks of the Shade is interesting and holds some truth, fuck the USA and their bollocks governemt, fuck Bush and all those red neck sister shagging hicks and fuck all of those thick as fuck Amerikkkans.
