espers - the weed tree

i'm new here and saw the post about about the upcoming gary higgins show with espers in philly. pretty excited, as i just moved to new hope.

i love this record!! i just got the first one a few weeks ago and then saw this weed tree one over the weekend and picked it up. i think i like it better than the first! i guess a few more weeks of listening to both will tell. even know its all covers (except of the last one), the thing sounds like a work of its own or at least it does to me. i'm not all that familiar with some of the people they covered. but the feeling and tone on it is so pretty. not like boring pretty that wears out, but really engrossing and sad. i'm really suprised it isn't getting the same amounts of indie press and stuff as the other recent releases.

it might have been! i haven't searched around much, just a few google searches. that's how i ended up here!

New one is a covers album isn't it?
I liked the 1st album. Not heard the new one yet.

The version of BOC's " Flaming Telepaths " is great.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

flaming telepaths is an epic! i want to hear the original. the espers version sounds so creepy and junkie.

The original is from the all time great BOC album, their third, Secret Treaties. What can I say? Back when they were a cool band, hanging out with Television, etc etc not too much cowbell.

Big big props to Espers for covering it. And it's a grat cover.

great cover I mean

i got a michael hurley cd in the mail yesterday. i was turned onto him via the song on here. it's called "blueberry wine" and it is really odd. real lonely, old sounding folky type of thing with amazing lyrics. i thought he'd sound more like the espers version of "blue mountain" or something. i really like the cd, though, and will probably be playing it on repeat for awhile. woo hoo!

xpost to sympathizer: HI!

also, espers get covered by golden ball on the new PP comp.

peter - yeah, I think Espers really Nico-fied the Hurley song. They made it dark and sober, whereas the Hurley is lonesome. 'Tea Song' is my favorite on that release, and one of my favorites by him period. Those are hurley's 1st recordings, and are bit different than what followed. if you're still interested after that try out 'long Journey' or 'Snockgrass'.

i actually just ordered the nico "desert shore" album with afraid on it. i feel like such a rookie - i used to dig deep into music, looking for gems and that sort of thing. i got really lazy over the past few years and just listened to whatever was "around" (indie-popular). it's sort cool to get this espers record and follow the trail. i ordered that blue oyster album, too. seems like the espers people are really music-nerdy or whatever. i did a bunch of googles on them and it's all like stuff i never heard of, weird collaborations and them talking about "theory" type stuff. they seem all serious, but also playful. this is all computer knowledge, though, so they could be like annoying hipsters for all i know. oh well. the music is great and i'm excited for tomorrow.

this board is very good for the unemployed.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

this board is also good for the employed

TRG (TRG), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

this board could even turn some of the employed into the unemployed

TRG (TRG), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

does anybody on this board want to employ me? i can google espers professionally.

update: i think i prerfer the "weed tree" to the first record. and i'm hooked on michael hurley, even though some of his stuff sounds like jimmie buffett.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Friday, 2 December 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

another update - i ordered the vinyl of this to give to a friend for a christmas gift over a month ago and i just got an email saying it should arrive next week. that sort of sucks.

funny old thread.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 27 December 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

this is my favorite Espers record, easy. I'm a huge Michael Hurley fan.
I got the Mississippi reissue of Armchair Boogie and found a copy of his 87 record WATERTOWER in a library sale.
Then I found six of his records at the community station I work at.
I wrote to him and was prepared to order a few of his oop releases on cdr direct, but then I my car got booted.
He seemed sympathetic about the whole thing.
