because what he's playing - has been playing for the past ten minutes - is so fucking awesome i could weep. it is just incredible. whatever it is, it's my song of the year.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

oh for fuck's sake. right, apparently it was called "comfort me i've lost my hat" and it was by some band with a ludicrously long name that began "upsea downsea leftsea rightsea" (or something) and continued in that vein for far too long for me to be able to a) write it down or b) make a sensible fist of googling.

the crappy "tracklisting" thing on the R1 site isn't updating.

anyone? christ, it was awesome.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I've been watching Al Pacino emote on BBC4.
So what was it? Is it?

Grimly just got slapped down by the presenter on air for not using the tracklisting :)

(He's right, it's mighty, btw)

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

They sound good!

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

ahem: "comfort me i've lost my heart". goddamn huw stephens an' his accent ;) ;) ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

"comfort me i've lost my hat" is a much, MUCH better title.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

And you can here a minute and a half of the aforementioned track here...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Here, are they Scottish?

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

no.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

I've just downloaded the 'Comfort' track from the label website and it turns out to be 8 and a half minutes - though only 2MB so presumably not ace quality. Nice track.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

As I listen to it now - it seems to be the same bit of track repeated 3 times - weird!
I want to hear the whole thing. Now.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

i'm just greedily sucking stuff down right now.

i think huw said the album was out today, or out soon, or something. hooo.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

new Underworld track being played just now. Missed the Upsy daisy people.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

yeh, whoops, that "RIGHT NOW" is gonna fuck shit up as long as this thread stays in "new answers".

heheheh, too bad. HEH.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Underworld on now, going all experimental-techno-industrial

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Ala Nitzer Ebb and early Finitribe

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

anyway, these hat heart-losing types, for those that care, are angsty blokes churning out vast instrumental guitar epics somewhere between mogwai and explosions in the sky. (or maybe just sky, those long-forgotten seventies bods with the shit logo.)

sadly, none of the clips i've got (especially "comfort me", which is just the WRONG BIT, is really doing them justice at all). bring on the album.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

re: RIGHT NOW. Especially because the Sirius Radio feed of Radio One is delayed for Stateside. Need a six-hour egg timer.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

crazy i remember seeing this lot come second in a local bands competition at the tunbridge wells forum in 2003. the lead singer of the emo / nu metal type band who won described them as "avant garde". there were only 3 bands in competiton. they were very good but i still voted for the dodgy emo type band 'cos i knew one of them.

jive session (elwisty), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

the album's out, and i'm off looking for it today.

it's good to have a purpose in life.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

album purchased. rock. not bad: 15 hours from first hearing them and getting their name wrong to owning the record.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Where did you find it Grimnly? I've been looking. They get a lot of attention on Drowned in Sound.

Also you might want to check out 65 Days Of Static, if you haven't already.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

65DoS are on my little list of things to check out, but thanks for the reminder. (i don't go back and check the list nearly enough.)

i got it at monorail in glasgow. (nb: that website isn't much use right now.) if monorail didn't actually exist, my mind wouldn't believe such a place was possible: a fantastic, friendly, hugely stocked independent record shop THAT'S INSIDE A PUB.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

WTF, that's totally not going to get you 99 lives.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

no, it kills all foes with an onslaught of post-rock guitar.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

just heard that on the listen again. reminds me of a cross between Mogwai and 'A Wrong Turn And Raindrops' (b-side of missing the moon, specifically that noise it makes when you change chords on an acoustic guitar).

listen again link here is anyone's curious: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onemusic/huw/

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

judging by the packaging, they've got a BIG envy fascination going on. and there are major nods to mono in the music too (i'm being a bit more articulate about it than i was last night; i've only had a chance to listen to "comfort me" again, but i'm ripping the rest right now).

in some ways it sounds like an acoustic wedding present, with a string section, playing post-rock. this, perhaps, is what i've been waiting for in music.

if the rest of the album is as good as that one song, i'll be fucking delighted.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)
