I know about the Pipettes' "Dirty Mind" (which is really good) and the Revelations' "You're The Loser" (which is REALLY) good), and the cover of "Since You Left" by Kicker (!) is good enough to warrant buying that EP on its own, but now I want more. Is there more? Please god let there be more.

YSI please?

there's not heaps. you could also try the "more soul than wigan casino" ep on fortuna pop, it's four of their bands doing northern soul covers (and where the kicker song originates)

agree that the revelations track is fantastic.

Man, I really want to hear this stuff.

I literally just put that Kicker cover up on my mp3 blog, although I've been planning to do that since about four seconds into listening to it last night.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

No I didn't - my first exposure to any of the Fortuna bands was through that Wigan Casino EP. How does the rest of Kicker's stuff compare to that single?

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

patchy, but some is very very good. 'boy have you got it?' is probably the best of their early stuff.

oh also the wake's "town of 85 lights" is a slower and muddier take on the NS thing.

half of the recent kicker cd is terrific. the other half isn't. if you combine the songs the lady sings on both cds you have a pretty fantastic record.

Does Johnny Boy's 'You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes & You Get What You Deserve' fit in this category?

I have heard none of the others mentioned so I might be a little off.

Go back to the late 90s and there's Spearmint's wonderful "Sweeping The Nation" and "Best Ballroom".

You could also make a decent album out of B and S's Northern Soul-leaning songs - "There's Too Much Love", "If She Wants Me" etc.

Spearmint's wonderful "Sweeping The Nation" - bah! How could I forget that one! It's one of my favourite songs ever!

Bill E (bill_e), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

John, can you YSI "Boy Have You Got It?" I can't seem to find it anywhere and I am teh intrigued.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

kickerpop.co.uk has some mp3s. 'blue' is as good as 'boy have you got it'.

Hey there chaps
The crappy half of Kicker here - I'll stick Boy, Have you Got It on the myspace page as a download.

Jill was supposed to sing more on the new album, but she's a very busy girl, so maybe next time...w.t.s.!
