I tried to find it, but I guess I was too late. I guess they couldn't get Shelby Lynne to sing "Mother." What makes this one worse than any other such type performance, fcc?

Maybe you should go look at the Bruce Springsteen videos on the other thread. If you dare.

it started out with dolly trying to pretty up the melody for no apparent reason, which wasn't horrible on its own. but then elton joined in, in a much-too-low-for-him key, and they turned it into an unimaginably awful duet improvisation:

much-too-low elton: imagine no possessions

much-too-improvisatory dolly: try to imagine no possessions

m-t-l elton: i wonder if you can

m-t-i dolly: oh i wonder if you can

etc.

i'm not quite doing it justice. but trust me, it was that much worse than it sounds.

I'm hearing in my head Dolly doing Louis Armstrong to Elton's Jack Teagarden

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

and then for the capper, my man billy joel came out (with shania twain) to present the entertainer of the year award, and either my tv was broken or billy was embalmed earlier today. either that he went into a coma immediately after seeing his buddy elton do that thing his buddy elton did.

brad paisley singing about jesus always makes me shiver with holiness...why does he not have a gospel album?

anthony, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

i wish it had been remotely like that.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

It actually seems pretty incongruous to have Dolly Parton singing "imagine there's no heaven

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

can we talk about Lee Ann Womack AND HOW FUCKING BRILLIANT AND TAMMYESQUE she is?

anthony, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)
well, she does it on her new album, along with "blowing in the wind," "the cruel war," and other such folk and pop classics.

it did seem a strange sentiment to singing at this particular gig, but i'm all for strange sentiments.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, that does sound bad.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Sigh. Is this archived anywhere?
