Songs Written by Serge Gainsbourg for Others: S/D

Yeah, I love me some Serge, but I still haven't strayed far from his prime solo work. What I'm really curious about right now are all the songs he wrote for other singers. I've been getting into his France Gall stuff, but beyond that... I know nothing. What should I look for? (YSIs would be awesome.)

i think there's a good comp of songs for french actresses floating around.

Brigitte Bardot - Harley Davidson. Apparently, it's regarded as one of his weakest songs, but I think it's great. ...same goes for Contact. Jane Birkin's early stuff was written by him too:

Aside from those mentioned above, SG wrote songs for Vanessa Paradis, Anna Karina, Isabelle Aubret, Juliette Greco, Catherine Deneuve, and please don't overlook his incestuous collaboration with his daughter Charlotte, particularly the video to "Lemon Incest" (kind of a father/daughter "Je t'aime, moi non plus" set to a Chopin tune) where they're in bed together. Sacre bleu!

My personal faves are Bardot and Karina; I find that SG's writing complements their voices and personalities without overwhelming them. Just my two bits.

There's a compilation called "Gainsbourg version femmes" that has a good selection. Please share your YSI finds.

Cheers.

Check out Jane Birkin's Di Doo Dah (1973). Fantastic album, produced and almost entirely written by Serge.

Michele Arnaud was a popular Left Bank singer in the late 50s, and gave Serge his first break by singing some of his songs in 1958. i don't know but i'd guess that he wrote Les Papillions Noirs in 1966 for her as a thank you.

More France Gall/Gainsbourg. "Frankenstein" with Jean-Claude Vannier arrangements. And I think that's Jacques Dutronc playing the creepy guy.
