older kids

Did you ever copy your older sibling's musical taste? Or the older kids in the neighborhood? I joined the Carpenter's fanclub when I was five just because my older sister was a member, I'm not a little embarrassed to admit. I think I still have the B&W 8X10 somewhere.

I got my brother into Wu-Tang and drum and bass. However one day he told me that classical music was more pure, so he abandoned my influences by the time "The W" dropped.

my sister talked me into purchasing bobbie gentry's "ode to billie joe" as my first music purchase and i have never trusted her taste in music since.

FatNick owes me. Heh, he even got distracted by my friend CR and ended up buying Ocean Colour Scene records for a while...but now he's INDUSTRIAL FatNick, of his own making.
I always wished I had an older sibling whose records I could pinch, I was jealous of this kid in my class who had a super cool PUNKROCK older sister who provided the means for him to be cooler than everyone else in my class.

My [older] brother steals all my favorite bands, songs even, too.

When I was younger I think I borrowed a couple from him. I don't remember what. Metallica, maybe. I pretended to like it, anyway, I really can't stomach that.

When I was a little kid my babysitter was really into Sabbath, Anthrax, Metallica, etc, and I remember him saying "I bet you'll be into metal someday."

Fast forward a few years when I'm playing in metal bands, and he's working at a video store that I go into. I proudly tell him where I'm at, but no, he's not into that sort of thing anymore, he's into "college rock" (and this was around the time of Hootie's emergence mind you).

My brother is four years older than I, and has been into music since he was young -- forcing the family to watch the Beatles on Ed Sullivan against my (age 6) wishes, though I was glad it happened right afterwards. He started playing guitar when he was 13, which also exposed me to a lot of music. I even tried learning as a teenager but didn't stick with it.

The taste of my siblings is pretty much thoroughly horrible, my brother being a case in point with Genesis and Marillion being his favourite bands when he was a teenager. My musical education was very much a case of being self-taught using music video programs and community radio. I never even met anyone who liked non-chart bands until I was 17.

So that would be a no, then. Although, my older siblings on occasion have been known to copy *my* musical taste.

my brother liked bon jovia nd bryana dams - he is now into christian light music...there's a lesson in that for everyone.

I was the oldest, and my younger sister never really seemed to pick up on anything I listened to. I think I turned my parents onto more stuff (Loreena McKennitt f'r'example). I don't remember any older figure that I tried to emulate, musically speaking, though I do remember a babysitter that used to just love love love Air Supply, and just barelling around the house screaming Air Supply lyrics at her was enough for me...I didn't have to buy the singles, and I think I probably turned HER off Air Supply too! Yay!

My brother was always really into music, and I guess we've quite often had very similar tastes, but it varies wildly between who 'gets there' first- most of the time we just grew into the same things on our own. Of course, there's a fair amount of taping and swapping (when we were younger he'd always force me into buying stuff he didn't want anymore for ridiculously extortionate rates, so now I'm hanging onto his copy of The White Horse for a verrry long time, so there).

I used to riffle through my cousin Mark's collection all the time when I was about 12/ 13. Lot's of Madchester indie-dance stuff, Roses, Happy Monday's etc.

My older brother was probably the person who had the biggest influence on my taste in music until I was about 12. At around that point I embraced all that was non-commercial and tended to dismiss anything that was commercially oriented or successful (although I really wasn't very consistent about it). I shared a room with my older brother during a brief portion of this phase and I remember him coming home from work or school and turning off the radio when I was listening to some kind of electronic music (1979ish): "Turn this garbage off." My brother's taste was fairly mainstream, but I think mainstream late 60's/70's stuff is pretty good, so that wasn't so bad. His collection didn't really go beyond rock and R&B though.

I was the oldest child, and had nobody to influence me musically. I learned it all from CREEM magazine. Really.

Oh yeah, my brother went away to college in 1986 and got paired in the dorm w/ a DJ at the college station. First trip back home he brought Psychocandy, early Butthole Surfers, all kinds of Eno & soon after that Nick Drake. That was a good influence.

My older sister was a big fan of Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell. I still love all that stuff. I think she was disappointed in me when my tastes got "heavier".
