Apparently this hasn't already been done - and OPO just isn't enough.

Perhaps someone will score the results and thus definitively find the BEST MADONNA SONG EVER. Perhaps not.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 17 November 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps someone will score the results and thus definitively find the BEST MADONNA SONG EVER. Perhaps not.

Almost everybody has listed "Into the Groove" ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 17 November 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

good to see the love for Deeper & Deeper. Donno what I'd say these days for an POX though, i'll need to listen to the catalogue again.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 17 November 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to add "Dress You Up." Yes, I know I already picked 10, but Tim only had 9 on his list, so I'm stealing his last slot.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 17 November 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

argh I forgot my tenth choice - it's because it's too difficult! Candidates are "Waiting" or "Justify My Love" or "Something To Remember" or "Live To Tell".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 17 November 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Too late. Mwah ha ha, etc.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 17 November 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

More people should hear "Something To Remember" - it's so gloriously OTT broadway.

xpost

That would be a difficult one to leave off my top 20. I love the way the tune goes into the "Guess I'm waiting for my place in the sun..." bit.

The Dick Tracy songs in general are underrated. Well, not "Hanky panky." But the Sondheim ballads like "Sooner or Later" and the totally overlooked "What Can You Lose," and also the cheeky "More."

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 17 November 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

I love "Hanky Panky". I had NO Idea what it was about when it came out. "Sooner or Later" is also fantastic. I play it any time I'm in.. pursuit.. and it gives me confidence where there'd otherwise be none.

And yes, "Something To Remember" is glorious. God, as is "You'll See". And lots of her ballads. I need a ballad POX and a nonballad POX.

MC Stylised Vadge (edwardo), Thursday, 17 November 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

Yes, "!!!" "Gambler" is the one Madonna track I would totally and utterly destroy without compunction.

Edward, you should try playing "Hanky Panky" the next time you're...in pursuit.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 17 November 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I might have more luck, but I might not get what I want, though! "Jimmy Jimmy" is probhably the most hilarious thing she ever did (NB: WHITE HEAT IS BAD-ASS NOT FUNNY), and I have a soft spot for it.

"Gambler" is the one Madonna track I would totally and utterly destroy without compunction

You have plainly lost your mind. In the early days she could suggest so much with just the sound of her voice. Before the silly accent, it was her most glorious talent.

It's also one of the few songs in which the verses are stronger than the chorus.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 17 November 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Man, where the fuck is the love for "Papa Don't Preach"???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

no one's mentioned my fave so far: "Physical Attraction"

You have plainly lost your mind.

Have I? HAVE I? HAVE I LOST MY MIND? OR DID I NEVER HAVE A MIND TO LOSE?!

Er, wait.

In the early days she could suggest so much with just the sound of her voice. Before the silly accent, it was her most glorious talent.

Sort of true, although I'm not sure what she could be said to be suggesting with her voice on "Gambler." That she has a royal flush?

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 18 November 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Having now heard the new album (and loving it) I have to add "Get Together" as I think it might be her best song ever. I can't stop listening to it! I can't wait to hear it real loud in a club and just go nuts.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Thursday, 24 November 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

I am now certain that "Hung Up" belongs in my POX.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 25 November 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Take this off my list, I don't know what I was thinking:

"What It Feels Like For a Girl"

And sub: "Get Together" (from the new one) or "Material Girl"
