Is there any real difference between 'homage' and 'hommage'?

Is the only difference that one is French and therefore sounds more 'theory' and shit? Or is there an actual definitional difference?

'Hommage' is French for homage, yes. Is it ever spelt that way in English??

Nope, I've never seen it spelt other than "homage" in English.

Is every one on this sight homage?

Have just done a search for 'hommage' on the Guardian website which yields 60 results. Excluding those which are part of a French phrase, the word is exclusively used to mean books/movies/art which knowingly alludes to other books/movies/art. 'Homage', on the other hand, seems to have a wider use.

See I'd pronounce the words the same anyway. I can see why somebody might use the French version as a technical term, but it smacks of needless pretentiosexuality to me.

hommage tends to refer to works which conspicuously reference other works, eg zadie smith's 'on beauty' is an hommage to e.m. forster, far from heaven' is an hommage to douglas sirk, etc.

homage has more general use, as in 'show respect to'.
