Tough call for me. Some, like the Mekons and Drive-By Truckers, I bet will. Others, like Springsteen and Peter Gabriel, will not. What do you think?

Most of my favorite bands have broken up, but of the ones remaining, I'd say their finest work is quite unfortunately behind them. But, I've been wrong before.

God! Who's my favourite acts? I dunno. Who'd I rush out to buy, thesedays? "It's in the shops, I must have it"? Can't think.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

They can be old favorite bands, of course. Like, the Soft Boys were never a favorite band, but they came back after 20 years and released a great record. Or Wire. Or Madonna. Or whomever.

The last album I rushed out to buy the day it came out was OutKast, and they are by far not my favorite act.

Oh Wire did. But I've played it twice, so making it my fav is stretching it.

Oh go on, Morrissey. He could still release an album which could be my favourite. He hasn;t for a while, but he could do it again.

royal trux, no. but nmh's new album is among his best.

Sometimes it's almost intentional - Paul McCartney's just done his 'back to basics' thing, which is being praised despite the knowing nature of the exercise. I think the problem is that when an act goes through the overproduced stage, they can't seem to come ou the other side and regain the vitality the once had. What will Belle & Sabastian sound like, post Trevor Horn, for example? Others (eg Julian Cope) opt for the stripped-down acoustic method, which to be frank, usually bores the pants off me.

Maybe my response to the question should be just "unfortunately, no" ;-)

bob dylan has come close, Joni Mitchell seems doubtful, as does The Cure.
On the other hand, Depeche Mode and New Order released some of my favorite albums this year

Hmmm, Mekons, sure (OOOH was one of their best). Pet Shop Boys, yes, although they do seem to be losing steam. Miles Davis, if you count vault material (Cellar Door, should it ever come out) maybe. Louis Armstrong, er, no. Dylan, a few years ago I would have said no way. He sure proved me wrong. So I guess, except for the dead ones, you never really know.

R.E.M. - no way, unfortunately.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Thursday, 17 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

There is no way that the next Cardiacs album will not be amazing.

everything, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Pet Shop Boys definitely could, regardless of what a lot of people said I really liked their last album. And the next one is produced by Trevor Horn so that could be great.

The Cure I really doubt it, unless Robert gets a hearing aid so he doens't scream so much and put his voice so high in the mix.

Cocteau Twins would have to reform, but I think they could have it in them. It took a while, but Milk & Kisses is now one of my favorite CT albums.

I'm still holding out for the next Spectrum album

This proposition is fairly testable by looking at past experience: How often in the past have artists who were then my favorites released new albums that equalled or surpassed their previous work?

The answer is: Pretty often, although the odds are against it for any particular artist. It becomes less and less likely when an artist has already released 3-4 albums I love (but I still have hopes for Ryan Adams and The Roots), and any artist I love based on one album is fairly likely to disappoint (*cough M.I.A.). But as long as I have a few active favorites on hand, it's probably going to happen with some regularity.

I have faith in dizzee and TI.

Cee-lo? Maybe.

Very much looking forward to the next The Avalanches record.

Mil (Mil), Friday, 18 November 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, now to make everybody groan. Oasis' album of this year is one of my favourites. So, I guess, them then.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 18 November 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Embrace are about to release one of my favourite albums.
