For real!

The Lox released their debut, Money, Power, Respect, in 1998, but departed Combs’ Bad Boy Records after orchestrating the legendary “Free The Lox” campaign. Styles, Jadakis and Sheek Louch, who was absent at the New York radio station, then joined the Ruff Ryders under the Interscope banner. The group recently vowed that they would no longer record for their label, Interscope Records, due to issues with company brass and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s apparent power with the company.

“This ain’t no varmint talk – this is real life,” said Jadakiss. Eventually, Sean “Diddy” Combs called from his Manhattan office to confront The Lox and counter their claims.

“If somebody is getting in the way of you expressing yourself, you can come get at me directly,” said Diddy from the phone. “We’re businessmen. We’re all mature adults here. Y’all sit on this interview and talk as long as you want to talk or you can take the invitation I extended before. Its not even getting there -You getting on the radio, whatever tactic – I’m not your enemy. Don’t sit here and portray that Puff took something from y’all.”

Immediately, Jadakiss retorted, “Well, what is it then? What do you call it? We can’t handle it any other way dealing with lawyers and you know that. So don’t get on the radio and act like a tough guy.”

The recording of the interview I heard (on a local station) ended w/ Angie Martinez trying to diffuse the situation by asking them what song they wanted to hear. Styles said (& I paraphrase), "Play '...The Benjamins,' make Diddy more money." Jada added, "Play the rock version."

Haha are you still getting "alerts" as well!?

^ Audio is here.

Freakin' hilarious. Jadakiss sounds seriously bent and starts going off on tangents threatening Puffy.

Point was made and i think they were justified to do it this way but it might've been a slightly better idea to do it sober and not sound so bitchmade/stupid.

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Also, Mase called up but got shook and hung up before going on air.

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Jada didn't actually say, "I'm gonna kill Puffy," but he was talking about refrigerators & the strength of the door hinges & "it's my life, it's worth dying for" & stuff like that.

A reggaeton version of "Benjamins" would be interesting.

I feel bad for the Lox, they always seem to get these roadblocks put in front of their careers, but honestly, their struggle right now is with 50 and Interscope, and they're only lashing out at Diddy and resurrecting a conflict that's been dormant for like 7 years because they're hungry and not getting money right now. It's a shitty situation they're in, but fact is they signed with Bad Boy, and they signed away a lot of money to get off Bad Boy, those were their decisions.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I was gonna say I dont know why they couldn't dead that beef, it certainly would be productive at this point. (Still love We Are the Streets and the new Sheek Louch has its moments.)

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah I need to listen to the Sheek more but so far I like it.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

(btw, deej, I keep seeing your name on a Jadakiss review for the Stylus assignment list, wtf, is that just a mixtape or something?)

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

The Lox should release a mixtape of all the old DJ Clue and Doo Wop mixtape freestyles from '97 and '98.

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

haha no thats from when the album came out, um, ages and ages ago? as in a year ago? I'm not sure why they didn't take that off the list. But I've sorta lost reservation privileges there because of it.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

haha oh okay wow, yeah, that was a long time ago. I was just confused because he didn't have anything on Interscope's release schedule even before him and S.P. went on strike.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I never had DSL at home until last week, which didn't help.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Styles P wasn't even on "..benjamins", yo

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

While y'all fuckin' with them twins from class
i'm out Vegas tryna strip Stacey Dash

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

"The conversation degenerated to the point where none of the parties statements were nearly incomprehensible."

It sucks for them, but they're acting like whiny bitches. If you're desperate enough to sign away half of everything, you better read that fine print or realize you'll still be feeling it years later.

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 17 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I gotta say, Diddy comes off pretty well here, it's pretty plausible for him to be on his business and for them to not really know their contracts well:

Honestly say what you will about Byron Crawford but I think dude has been pretty funny covering this whole thing, even if he doesn't like their music for some reason. But the whole Sheek Louch the birthday boy running joke is amusing.

five years pass...

Kiss of Death an underappreciated album

emma goldbond (San Te), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

loving San Te's D-Block phase

trv kvnt (some dude), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

lol I didn't dig em back in the day but lately I've been digging into their back catalogs. definitely feels like something I overlooked despite my east coast gorging back in the day.

emma goldbond (San Te), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's cool, Lox do not get enough goon props imo, i took some shit for having a Sheek Louch album on my '08 year end list

trv kvnt (some dude), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

yea I was kinda surprised when I searched for threads and barely found any.

also got the impression Sheek is clowned on via one of the few Lox polls I saw.

emma goldbond (San Te), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

i havent heard that sheek record from '08 but listening to an entire sheek record has been a chore for me in the past

challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

maybe thats the one i did hear idk

challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

the '08 one was "Sliverback Gorilla," haven't heard the new one or his first but it was at least better than "After Taxes," which was a bit of a chore

trv kvnt (some dude), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 06:08 (fifteen years ago)

oh 'after taxes' is the one ive heard

challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 07:14 (fifteen years ago)

both the Lox "money power and respect" and Jadakiss "Kiss of death" cds I got through amazon marketplace are scratched and skip in places. bah! especially a bummer on the former as three tracks are almost unplayable.

emma goldbond (San Te), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

Also I have the sheek louch that came out last year but haven't spun yet.

emma goldbond (San Te), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

first impression of the newest Sheek Louch is that he sounds like a much less talented Redman :/.

teen laqueefah (San Te), Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

it never occurred to me but there really is a bit of a Redman quality to his voice, isn't there. i thought about checking out his new album but i don't know if i was ready to deal with if i liked the album with that cover art.

trv kvnt (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

yea I mistook him for Redman the first time I heard him on No Way Out.

Honestly, this is way different than what I expected, the song I'm on now is almost Rick Ross-y styled (in terms of production, not rapping), whereas I think he works better over raw NYC hip hop beats.

"Blood and Tears" is pretty good though, hoping this is a turning point on the album cuz ain't much been memorable so far.

teen laqueefah (San Te), Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

also I imagine asshole racists are having a field day with that album cover.
