So what about Abruptum? Full on classic screechy Black Metal if you ask me. do these guys have a website and are they still around?

this was the band with the dwarf who was so evil he could only be referred to as "It", i think. If so then, well, dud I'm afraid.

they're almost more of a noise band than a traditional black metal band. they do sound evil, i'll give 'em that.

Some of their early demo stuff was pretty close to "traditional" black metal. The later chains-clanking-and-distant-screams stuff was pretty much unlike anything else out there, but that's not necessarily a good thing. I haven't listened to them in years, but I remember liking It's other project, Ophthalamia, a lot better, because with that group he covered Motley Crue's "Red Hot."

They are excellent, and adhere to the original black metal/objectivist standard of "make it new" - they don't sound like the other BM bands, you sort of have to scope out what their terms are first and then listen to the stuff on these terms.

one year passes...

Was just in Finland, and picked up "In Umbra . ." because . . well, you've got to bring back some blackness from the Northlands.

Wow. Yea, verily, thrice wow. Much, much more controlled and effective than I'd been led to believe. For comparisons, I'd be grasping for elements of bands as diverse as Einsturzende Neubauten and Acid Mothers. I have to blind test this with metal-hating noisenik friends.

Where do I go from here? Any interview material on these guys?

two months pass...

Finally caught up with "Evil Genius". Astonishing stuff, on a whole different level of energy and intensity from "In Umbra . ." Relatively short blasts, but just as wild.

I find myself greatly cheered to know that I share a planet with beings capable of this level of creativity. Even if that's the very last reaction they intended.
