Tommy Boy to Release Massive Hip-Hop Collection

Kati Llewellyn reports:
Can't stop, won't stop: In the spirit of Tommy Boy Records' upcoming 25th anniversary, the label will release Hip-Hop Essentials 1979-1991, a massive 12-volume CD collection featuring the artists who cemented hip-hop's foundation. Discs one through four are in stores now, five through eight hit in January, and the remainder in March. The release pattern reminds us of Trapped in the Closet, only without the sneak peek one-man VMA performance.

The Essentials feature cover art from renowned photographer Martha Cooper, and were pieced together by Tommy Boy founder and CEO Tom Silverman and Wild Pitch Records founder Stu Fine. Their selections include tracks from Grandmaster Flash, Beastie Boys, Fearless Four, Salt-N-Pepa, Sugar Hill Gang, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Biz Markie, Digital Underground, N.W.A., Run-DMC, and more, but we're saving our typing for the 144-song track list. Yikes! In addition to an introduction by Nelson George, each individual volume includes a set of liner notes from a journalist.

Unfortunately, the track listings for the volumes seem to follow no rhyme or reason. Not organized thematically or chronologically or even alphabetically, the discs are a joyful smorgasboard of eras and styles.

According to a press release we have handy, "Some tracks may also re-educate young and old alike to the dangers of cocaine, unprotected sex, racism, skeezer women, tramp men or police brutality." Shit-- Street Cred 101 students, class is now in session.

Ethan, Jess, Matos, donut, and which eight other ILXors?

what a groaner

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Is this really necessary? A good 60% at least of those tracks are on albums that virtually every hip hop fan is going to own.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Also, how many hip-hop compilations and box sets have been released now? That would cover maybe the other 39.999999%

do knut (donut), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

But hey, it's HipHopXmas!

do knut (donut), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Another "classic hip hop" compilation with "rebel without a pause", "the message", "it takes two" and "walk this way on"..just what the world needs.

Still, this does have some very nice rare cuts for the newjacks like "this cut's got flavor" by Latee and "making cash money" by Busy Bee, both personal favorites of mine.

There should be some more Spoonie Gee on there, though. There can be no excuse for a 12 disc set which doesn't include "love rap" and "new rap language".

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I didn't notice it has "weekend" by Coldcrush on there. Very rare track. What's up with no "fresh, fly, wild and bold" though ?

Also 3 Sugarhill Gang cuts and only 1 Doug E. Fresh cut? "The show", "play this only at night" or "keep rising to the top" should be on here instead of the appalling "the lover in you".

ELLI$, Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

there's a crash crew song on their too, i think there's a decent amount of stuff on there that you don't really need the full album, but it's a great track...stuff like Masterdon Committe, Tim Dog, etc...

"Fresh Fly Wild and Bold" is on the soundtrack to the movie Fresh, that chess movie...really great soundtrack, great old school stuff + some rare-ish Wu Tang stuff...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Did Doug E. Fresh ever even get his albums issued on CD?

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

"Fresh Fly Wild and Bold" is on the soundtrack to the movie Fresh, that chess movie

excellent movie. i bought it for a dollar from a video store that was going out of business.

oh ilx my lionheart (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Where the FUCK are Lessons 1-3? 20 years on and Tommy Boy STILL can't get them released?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Dude. What about "Ooh I Love You Rakeem"?
