I believe hip-hop is the most common form.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 18 November 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

I think the second is also acceptable. I've never seen the third until now.

It's actually for an official handbook, so, convention, style and all that.

moley (moley), Friday, 18 November 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

oh, then hip-hop i guess

splates (splates), Friday, 18 November 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

KRS argues pretty vehemently against the hyphen. I don't remember his reasoning.

Robert L Bell (Robert L Bell), Friday, 18 November 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

KRS argues pretty vehemently against pretty much everything.

Hip-hop-the-hippie-the-hippie-to-the-hip-hip-hop.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 November 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Village Voice style is pretty much "'hip-hop' unless you're Greg Tate." I don't know what Tate's reasoning is, aesthetical or syntactical.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 18 November 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

The Wire says HipHop, but they're caps maniacs, so. (Also maybe not what I'd call the obv reference for this music anyway.)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 18 November 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

they're WEIRD caps maniacs--they just apply them willy-nilly, God knows why. I can just imagine the edit meetings: "No, Metal is capitalized but blues isn't." "Why?" "Just do it."

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 18 November 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

Do the Wire do it throughout, though, or just on the header for Dave Tompkins review columns (ie design decision rather than style guide)?

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 18 November 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

As a lazy fuck, I type hiphop because it has the fewest keystrokes.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one who writes rap when talking about the music, and hip hop when talking about the culture?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

no, everybody does that, because it's the most logical thing in the world.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

So you use "rap" when talking about hip-hop without vocals, eh?

Josh Witkowski (braineater), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

it's either hip hop or hip-hop. both spellings are right.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

check AP or Chicago Manuals

We settled on hip-hop. I didn't go looking for KRS-1's argument against the hyphen. Does anyone have a link? I need some edutainment.

moley, Friday, 18 November 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I've never put a hyphen between hip and hop and didn't realize that so many people do!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

KRS at his most magisterial, from an essay he wrote called "The Refinitions." Behold:

In its true essence, Hiphop cannot be (and should not be) interpreted or described fully in words. It is a feeling. An awareness.

1 Intellectually, it is an alternative behavior that enables one to transform subjects and objects in an attempt to describe and/or change the character and desires of ones being.

2 Hiphop is a unique inner-city awareness that enhances ones ability to self-create. It is a "sight."

3 In the past Hiphop was spelled "hip-hop." True Hiphoppas are advised to spell Hiphop with a capital "H," as it is the name of our collective consciousness and our kulture.

4 Hiphop, spelled "hip-hop," means (hip) trendy, (hop) jump or dance. We are not just a "trendy dance" however, those that spell Hiphop like this (hip-hop) usually approaches Hiphop like a trendy dance or music.

5 In addition, Hiphop's kultural unity is established by spelling Hiphop as one word, "Hiphop," unless the term "Hiphop" is being displayed as art or in public advertisement.

6 Those that spell Hiphop, "hip-hop" are undermining Hiphop's kultural unity and demeaning the importance of what Hiphop really is.

7 Know this. Hiphop spelled "Hiphop," is not only the code for writers that participate in Hiphop's preservation, generally it is a matter of respect!

Shit, KRS-1 makes total sense. I'm going to need to revise our handbook.

moley, Saturday, 19 November 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget to correct any non-incidences of the word "kultural" as well.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 19 November 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Matos the Wire caps rules seem pretty strange – I think I've mentioned reading about someone who worked in "jazz and Improv" here once.

Haha KRS on Hiphop kulture reads almost like G P-Orridge on the meaning ov Magick or something: Intellectually, it is an alternative behavior that enables one to transform subjects and objects in an attempt to describe and/or change the character and desires of ones being.
