Acts that have indeed released ENOUGH "Best Of" albums by now

Not because they are bad (a lot of them are musically brilliant), but because their record labels seem to milk their output, eternally releasing new "Best Of"s even though the old ones usually work perfectly yet.

Examples:
- David Bowie
- Elvis Presley
- Creedence Clearwater Revival
- Supertramp
- The Eagles
- Boney M
- Carpenters
- The Doors
- Rolling Stones
- Beach Boys
- Smokie
- Kiss

Any more?

Ramones
Elvis Costello
Sex Pistols

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

The Smiths are the worst by a fey English mile, they're the only band I can think of that has something like twice as many collections as they do albums, to the point where it actually CONFUSES new fans and distorts the way the band is received and understood. When the addition of more compilations makes it somehow HARDER to get everything by the band you know you're in trouble. Meanwhile it means that depending on which collections you get, you can end up with completely different takes on the band, while still somehow being kind of well-versed in most of their material. Someone who has, say, one of the Singles discs plus Louder Than Bombs gets to entirely bypass the interminable mope tracks on Queen Is Dead and the self-titled record, for example.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 18 November 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

I haven't counted to be sure, but don't the Who have more compilations than original albums?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Gin Blossoms. I think two hits comps for a two album career is plenty.

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Sex Pistols OTM.

The Smiths are the worst by a fey English mile, they're the only band I can think of that has something like twice as many collections as they do albums

Apparently, Smokie have released more "Best Of"s than ordinary studio albums, and they have released considerably more studio albums than The Smiths.

SUBLIME

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Madness can probably also stop with the Best Ofs.

And the day James Blunt releases his greatest hits will be the day he releases one too many.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Cream, The Who ...

Aren't Best Ofs, for dinosaur acts and/or small-lable acts, just a way of licensing the songs by different lables for a quick buck? Meaning .. the Best Of compilation that came out five years ago is out of print because the licensing was for a limited run .. so the newer Best Of is meant as a replacement - just a new deal to keep selling the same staples. ..just a guess..

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Friday, 18 November 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

This morning on telly I saw a Bryan Adams best of ad. I think one is enough. Or rather too much already.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I guess the world doesn't need any more Sex Pistols "Best Of"s either by now.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

every motown act ever

Same about compilations with various artists too. And yet, they have yet to release a really good chronicle of the stereo versions of their 60s material.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

How many albums in the past ten years by Michael Jackson have not been "Greatest Hits" or "Collections" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

The Fall

This morning on telly I saw a Bryan Adams best of ad. I think one is enough. Or rather too much already.

At least this new one has a track from his usually forgotten first album - "Remember." Catchy.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Counting compilations from all over the world is cheating, kinda, since a performer is often signed to different labels in different countries, all of which want to release collections of their own. But even so, that Kim Wilde discography is astonishing. How many hits did she HAVE, anyways?! (I know precisely two.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Smokie?!??!

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

The Band -- 20 or 25 best-ofs and comps, including the new box set, which should be definitive (although an 8-disc set of The Hawks-era stuff is on the way).

JC-L (JC-L), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Counting compilations from all over the world is cheating, kinda, since a performer is often signed to different labels in different countries, all of which want to release collections of their own.

I believe Bowie released one compilation specially made for each country a few years back, so he will beat most here anyway. :)

Btw. anyone else noticed how EMI are responsible for an alarming lot of these acts?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

It occurred to me recently that I have never seen an original Sam & Dave album, only Best Ofs & Greatest Hits. Can you even get their original albums on CD?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Willie Nelson has more best-ofs than the Fall have proper albums - possibly three times over.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I just saw an Anastacia greatest hits. That's got to be more than enough too.

New Order:

Substance

The Damned!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 18 November 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

New Order also have (the rest of) and Retro, and there were single-disc and double-disc versions of Substance (and possibly two different versions of the single-disc, if 1963 wasn't always on it). Any advance?

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

New fucking Order is the only correct answer.

New Order are "My favourite band ever" but if they release another greatest hits with like one or two damn tracks on that i haven't already got I am gonna be so angry and...and...and probably buy it anyway. sigh.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Saturday, 19 November 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

"It occurred to me recently that I have never seen an original Sam & Dave album, only Best Ofs & Greatest Hits. Can you even get their original albums on CD?"

Rhino did 'em in the early 90s as part of a Stax/Atlantic reissue series, but they are currently OOP (like most of the series titles apparantly).

General Doinel (Charles McCain), Saturday, 19 November 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

The Ramones!!!

That new box set with the comics and all is really nice, but Sire is milking the Ramones like RCA does Elvis!!

Other acts who are overrepresented on the compilation circuit:
- the Mamas & the Papas
- the Lovin' Spoonful
- the Blues Project (not so much anymore, but MGM reissued the hell out of their stuff in the late 60's-early 70's...bet the band didn't see one red cent)

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh, almost forgot, speaking of MGM - Hank Williams (although Hank, Jr. comes close).

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

What kills me about all these Doors compilations is the cover art. Elektra has apparently forgotten that there were three other members besides Jim Morrison...

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

new FUCKING order

New Order are "My favourite band ever" but if they release another greatest hits with like one or two damn tracks on that i haven't already got I am gonna be so angry and...and...and probably buy it anyway. sigh.

gary numan WOULD rule this thread -- if not for the fact that a lot of numan comps are done without his knowledge or consent.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 20 November 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I guess that is the case with most of these acts, Eisbär.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 21 November 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

George Jones

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 21 November 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

I CANNOT BELIEVE BOB MARLEY HASN'T BEEN NAMED YET?!!

I've seen 4 disc compilations on sale at Best Buy for $9.99 and then next door at the used CD place for $24.99. its a friggin menace!!! His music would be so refreshing were it not abused.

hydrallus (hydraulis2), Monday, 21 November 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

What kills me about all these Doors compilations is the cover art. Elektra has apparently forgotten that there were three other members besides Jim Morrison...
-- Rev. Hoodoo

...who delivered two albums all by they own selves, with ABSOLUTELY no input from Mr. Mojo Risin, due to his being dead and all!

(And has anything from those two LPs ever appeared, on ANY compilation?! I think not.)

http://robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?id=312&name=Dave+Mason

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 21 November 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

(Uh, that Xgau/Dave Mason link has nothing whatsoever to do with the Doors - it shoulda had a separate post of its own. But it's totally on-topic, and an amazing read nonetheless, notwithstanding your personal opinion of the Dean and his works.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 21 November 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

As of the release of #1, I would definitely say The Beatles. Had it not been for this release, I might think differently.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 21 November 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

the Who SO FUCKING WINS this category it isn't even funny

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 21 November 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

"I CANNOT BELIEVE BOB MARLEY HASN'T BEEN NAMED YET?!!"

I was shocked when I thought that I might actually make it to the end of this thread without someone mentioning Bob Marley. In spite of some serious competition from some others, he - or rather his estate - are the prime offenders in this category.

Jimi Hendrix must have quite a few too.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 21 November 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

nobody's said miles davis yet?

Nick Sylvester, Monday, 21 November 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

MICHAEL JACKSON, seriously

hello i have no name, Monday, 21 November 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I cant' believe no one has mentioned The Eagles. Out of Wikipedia... Can you believe what those guys sell while having more best of albums than actual studio albums?

1976 Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) (compilation) #1 US, #2 UK, US Sales: 28,000,000
1982 The Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 (compilation) #52 US, US Sales: 11,000,000
1984 The Best of the Eagles (European compilation) #8 UK
1994 The Very Best of The Eagles (1994) (European compilation) #4 UK
1994 Hell Freezes Over (live album) #1 US, #18 UK, US Sales: 8,000,000 (newly certified 6/05)
2000 Selected Works: 1972-1999 (box set) #109 US, US Sales: 1,000,000
2001 The Very Best of the Eagles (2001) (European compilation) #3 UK
2003 The Very Best of the Eagles (2003) (compilation) #3 US, #27 UK (called The Complete Greatest Hits in Europe), US Sales: 3,000,000

elgolfo (elgolfo), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe Sweet nor T. Rex have been named.

I love both bands, but I hate having to look through at least two dozen CDs only to have each of them be a different "Best Of" release. :(

(and yeah, I was about to mention Bob Marley... he suffers the worst of this.)

When you have to do research to actually buy a legit studio album by any of the artists above, you know it's just gone beyond THAT point.

do knut (donut), Monday, 21 November 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

Possibly because I did, already in the initial article :)
