No, Zeena Parkins is not noise. She was a totally unnecessary addition to Skeleton Crew. And I think she played on a Marisa Monte album.

Cosey Fanni Tutti, obv. Ikue Mori.

4klsk, Friday, 18 November 2005 06:51 (nineteen years ago)

Zeena Parkins has made some serious noise.

Carla's got too fine a voice to be considered a "noise" artists. The `Fibbers and Ethyl Meatplow were both pretty melodic.

Carla's got too fine a voice to be considered a "noise" artists. The `Fibbers and Ethyl Meatplow were both pretty melodic.

I was thinking more of the 45-minute feedback jam I saw her do with Nels Cline. But some of the Fibbers' stuff is pretty jarring (even while melodic too). I think she's kind of noise by inclination if not always by actual practice. But I'm sure noise dudes would find my definition of noise insufficiently rigorous.

don't forget Zeena's cousin Andrea Parkins! she makes some pretty awesome noise with electronically processed accordian.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

ha, I didn't know they were related!

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'd vote for Cosey. Even though she's spent most of her career making disco, she's like the godmother of late 20th century noise.

Astonishing no one's mentioned Diamanda Galas. She doesn't just make noise, she is noise.

Is Suckdog noise, discuss.

Newsflash: Bunnybrains NSFW, amateur video at 11

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite Azita isn't the noise but the Steely Dan record. I saw her perform in a coffee shop in chicago circa 96, just post scissor girls. She went on before Jim O'Rourke. There were like 12 people there. Her performance was really angry, noisy, difficult, abrasive and confrontational. I was thinking "hey, like 12 people came out tonight, you should be nicer to them!" Jim taped down some keys on a farfisa and played an unamplified violin(viola?) droning along in a Tony Conrad manner. It was beautiful.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

check out the "Flying A" bags for that

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

What's this?

Also, what kind of case do I need for a big DJ mixer...

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

What about Emi Maeda? Her live performances are great. Also from a strings background (Harp), but a totally unvirtuosic relationship to the instrument, in contrast to Zeena's style. I like them both, really.

Timothy Ivison, Friday, 18 November 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Fe-Mail.

Anyone for Detroit's Viki? She had a split with Hair Police a couple years back.

UBUIBI (home of 'big city orchestrae' and friends) is releasing WOMEN TAKE BACK THE NOISE (a compilation of 47 female noise and other experimental musics by women) - you will hear exclusive tracks from many of the artists mentioned here in this thread-- details and documentation of the project can be viewed here:

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

these screaming ladies haven't been mentioned:
junko from hijokaidan
erika hoffman-dilloway

the latter has an cdr out on hanson. description from the label below:
----------------------------------------------------------------
In 1996 my wife recorded this and it was released as a cassette that
year. It is her screaming. Total harsh vocal NOISE from my then 18
year old wife! Anyone that knows her voice from recording w/ bands
like HIS NAME IS ALIVE and others, please take warning...THIS IS A
TOTAL SCREECHING ATTACK. Bits of this were also used on my BEGGAR
MASTER LP. I convinced her that this needed to be re-released, but she had some terms before she would agree. SO...the profits made from this CDR will go to THE KIRTIPUR DEAF CLUB in Kirtipur, Nepal.
-------------------

Not sure if this is any good but it does seem intriguing!

hello again folks-- so glad to see a few more women on this thread since i last stopped by-- the WOMEN TAKE BACK THE NOISE compilation is nearing completion -- finally- after 3 years' time. a few of the women you have all mentioned here are on the comp and believe me, if i would have wanted to keep going, there are so many more 'women noizers' out there and more each day so that really perks me up to see (and mostly HEAR).

i'll stop back through here one last time to let any of you know who might be interested when it's released- we're looking at some point between June-early-July-- check the website: http://ubuibi.org/wtbtn

also there will be some SF bay area live performance series as well- i've just started inviting artists from the comp-- stay tuned. great thread!
