Apart from similar titles, both of these atrocities feature remedial-level use of the "Paint Daubs" filter, quite possibly the lamest tool in the Photoshop palette. Any others?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 18 November 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

To be more precise, Neil wears the "Fresco" filter and Leonard sports the Daubs.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 18 November 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

Neil looks more like a Flash - Trace Bitmap deal to me.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 18 November 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

nah, it's def fresco, note the truly noisome random palette.

cw (cww), Friday, 18 November 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

The liner notes to The Cure - Bloodflowers are HORRENDOUS.
From what I recall it's a bunch of photographs with one-step photoshop paint daub/plastic wrap/ass-sandwich style filters.

rsyouth, Friday, 18 November 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

The first one is most definitly a liberal use of the 'cut out' filter on Niels body. Not sure about the face.

Indeed!

it's almost impossible to use photoshop filters without looking like a complete moron. they are garbage invented by adobe to hook entry-level users.

lf, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I like that Suede cover! Which I guess just demonstrates that I don't know shit about art - except for my own tastes, which can be pretty arbitrary.

Those Neil & Leonard covers are indeed quite hideous.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

peter saville and associates have been relying on PSfilters for a while now. the 7" covers for WFTSC are awful. i wouldn't even print those out in b/w for a homemade CD, let alone go full color on an actual release. there are 3 covers. the first has no filter, the second has what looks like Stained Glass + Blur = 25% and the third is Stained Glass + Blur = 50%. You get a progression of amount of filter over the 3 covers and they all look like shit!

By the way, am I a misogynistic creep for suspecting that the Leonard Cohen cover's design credit goes to the woman on his left (his producer/co-writer/lover/manager)? It would explain both the quality of the cover and her shocking prominence on it.

That's just a picture taken through a shower door. Dude.

Shower Door filter!

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

The Suede cover is great.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

I just tried out the fresco filter for laughs and I don't see how you could possibly obtain the results in the Neil Diamond cover using that filter. I still say it screams "Trace Bitmap."

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Look guys, the filter Neil Diamond is using is CUTOUT.

Just try it and you will see!

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Saturday, 19 November 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I will demonstrate:

and with cutout applied to the whole thing:

i quite like that version actually.

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Saturday, 19 November 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

There is definitly a different filter going on for his face though.

I don't know anything about Photoshop.. But this looks like a "make it look like a painting while it is a photo"-filter.

Ludo (Ludo), Saturday, 19 November 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Walter Kranz is correct.

The first is FLASH. Not Photoshop. Definitely. "truly noisome random palette" my ass.

The question we should be asking ourselves is "would these and all other lame filters be so bad if we weren't aware of the simplicity of the process?"

-- Hairy Asshurt (lindseyloha...), November 19th, 2005.

What you've proven is that it is not the cutout filter, but that it is obviously the trace bitmap feature in FLASH. There is much more detail and it is much more vector-y with those smooth, Flashed-out treatment of corners.

Graphic Artist, Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Ludo - yup, that's a "watercolor" filter, used somewhat judiciously.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 19 November 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

This is the best internet argument I have ever seen!

The world is full of crushing debt.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Saturday, 19 November 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised to see Suede in here. I once was flipping through an art book at Borders and saw a bunch of really, really well done Suede covers.

//////>>!, Saturday, 19 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, couldn't resist

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 19 November 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it almost approaches Alien vs. Predator levels of dorkery huh?
