Where should I go? In town to look at colleges, and surely there must be some music-related things worth visiting

There is no music in Boston. None.

(Sorry Will. You rhymed "Boston" and "awesome". I agree Boston is awesome. However you initiated yourself as awesome. -1)

(I am not affiliated with Unlocked Groove in any way - other than my fan club decoder ring, of course. So the "we" above comes from an E-mail Mike Uzzi sent the Unlocked Groove mailing list.)

Will is probably not 21 - if not Will, good luck. There are some good record stores -
Stereo Jacks - vinyl
Planet Records - used CDs
Newbury Comics - discounted new (and new in general)
Twisted Village - everything those places likely won't have

Boston Phoenix
MP3 OF THE WEEK
HALLELUJAH THE HILLS, "WHEN MIDNIGHT FALLS"

Last summer, before they broke up, we proclaimed the Stairs' swan song, ON SLEEP LAB, the local indie-pop album of the year. It's mid November, and we stand by that assessment. But it may soon have competition. Principal songwriter Ryan Walsh has regrouped under the name HALLELUJAH THE HILLS, and he's got a mess of new music in store. He's writing the score for the American Repertory Theatre's production ISLAND OF SLAVES and also recording HtH's debut album, THE TEENAGE WILDLIFE FIELD RECORDINGS VOLUME ONE. Four new Hallelujah demos are up at www.myspace.com/hallelujahthehills, and the group debut Sunday at Great Scott.

Try to hit the stores TRG listed. There are a couple decent used CD/record stores around Harvard Square. For the club scene, just pick up a copy of the Boston Phoenix (local free weekly), that'll tell you pretty much everything that's going on. As noted, if you're not sporting heavy facial hair it might be hard getting in if you're < 21. If you're into film there are quite a few good cinemas such as the Brattle. Lady Sovereign's playing the Middle East on 11/28, I think.

FYI, BU's female/male student ratio is like 3:1. When I was 18, that piece of information might have peaked my interest. Some of the campus classrooms are practically Dickensian in their decrepitude, however.

Thanks. I was considering the Jim Carroll show tonight, but couldn't get a ride. We drove by Stereo Jacks, though, and I think I can finagle a trip tomorrow.

Edward, I went to BU today. I heard the campus was huge, and it is. But the girls are also very attractive.

WillS, Saturday, 19 November 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

One word of warning; BU has recently gone on a big grade deflation trip. Good school but hell on the GPA. Attractive girls and unforgiving professors may prove to be a dangerous cocktail.
