Black Dice - Broken Ear Record

Not awful, but disappointing. I liked it first time I heard it but in no way does it have the depth and atmosphere of their previous releases and since my first couple of listens I've been unaboe to put it on again.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

The Black Dice album definitely sucks, but I hated Beaches & Canyons too.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Adam Green - Gemstones

Uh, because it's really really really bad? There has been a lot of disappointments (British Sea Power, Blackalicious, Broken Social Scene) but I wouldn't necessarily say they're bad albums. Gemstones starts with the forced sub-Beck lyrics and continues with that annoying crooner delivery. There is absolutely no reason for this album's existence.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Daft Punk
Bright Eyes - Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
50 Cent
Tori Amos
Gorillaz
Neil Young
Ryan Adams - Cold Roses

Josh Love (screamapillar), Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Gorillaz

Why?

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Saturday, 19 November 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Kaiser 'we were shit in '97 and we're even worse now' Chiefs

Gym Class Heroes - The Papercut Chronicles.

A rap group on emo-simp label Fueled By Ramen.

Nothing has been more cringeworthy for me this year. And I've heard the new Nickelback. Check out this "clever" song that namechecks 100 bands that I hate.

I took cutie for a ride in my deathcab
She tipped me with a kiss I dropped her off at the meth lab
Before she left she made a dashboard confessional
And spilled her guts in cursive but whats worse is
I could still see her bright eyes like sunny day real estate
Oh my and in a funny way it irritates
So high but no chance
My little chemical romance left a bad taste in my mouth
But I imposed her like hey mercedes why the long face
Why you cryin? theres no need
Just put on this coheed and fallout
Boy meets girl jimmy eat world
But Schlep eats pills till hes all out
Not once not twice she was thrice times a lady
Mackin on brand new, but I had to
Bounce over to the postal service to
Pick up these pills that take care of my nervousness

And all the way I saw planes that were mistooken for stars
She played games but she took em too far
At the drive in
Watching soft porn and you can tell
By the trail of the dead, that there was somethin in the popcorn
I hop in my cab destination midtown
Just to get up with some kids that like to get down
I'd made my rounds and that was that
In between the frowns and scraps and heart attacks
And I remember I seen her ass in early november
On a thursday takein back sunday for a refund
She shot a wink like no hard feelings
Then she jetted to brazil man them pills had me spun

This is the story of the year right here
This is hot water music
Put ya ramen into it

Whiney: (OK, I like Thrice and the Fallout Boy/My Chem singles are pretty hot. But I never liked Trail Of Fucking Dead!)

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 19 November 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Wow. After reading that I never want to see Atmosphere called emo-rap again. He's DMX by comparison.

I really haven't heard too many awful records. The Daft Punk, though, was fairly bad -- not simply because it was repetitive, but because the stuff it repeated was often really irritating ("One More Time" worked because it was catchy and euphoric) and they didn't bother to build on what good ideas they had. I have listened to "Robot Rock" about once in the last eight months and Breakwater's "Release the Beast" about 15.

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 19 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Also, imagine it played by a funkless live band made up of ex-emo kids.

Ew ew ew ick (xp Whiney; I dunno who any of Dom's bands are)

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 19 November 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Actually "Riot Radio" aside that Dead '60s album is pretty ass, too

disco violence (disco violence), Saturday, 19 November 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I refuse to accept that Open Season was any kind of disappointment.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm going for Daft Punk's, simply because I liked their earlier stuff so much and was thus a lot more disappointed.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay X&Y - absolutely awful - forced to background listen to this album in the office back in June about 3 times.

Whiney voice, crappy lyrics and predictable formula staid stadium rock sound.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

looks like dom doesn't like NME type britrock. Add Hard-Fi to the list.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 19 November 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Whiney voice

Hey!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 19 November 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Dom is OTM regarding the Others, worst I have heard.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 19 November 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

"Mirror Kissers" by the Cribs is one of my favourite rock tunes of '05.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 19 November 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

That homonculus James Blunt gets my vote. But then there's so many others to pick. I'd put Damien Rice, Daniel Poulter, Elton John and any of those whiny emo bands up there.

The only good music seems to be dark folk and industrial nowadays.

Maybe I'm just pissed off from listening to the radio today.

[euchrid] (euchrid), Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm betting that I haven't heard the worst album of 2005, due to its being so overwhelmingly awful that no label, not even that really, really awful one--you know the one--would pick it up or have anything to do with it.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute

It's an absolutely unlistenable mess. So is the new Broken Social Scene album, but at least that has a few redeemable/great tunes. Oh and that Billy Corgan solo album is pretty shite. 2005 was pretty shitty albums wise...

ohyeah, Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

2005 was pretty shitty albums wise...

it definately was not

but i nominate

HARD-Fi - Stars of CCTV
Minus the Bear - Menus El Oso [who listens to this?]
both Bright Eyes albums

Rizz (Rizz), Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

It definitely was. Amazing year singles-wise, shitty year in terms of albums. That's not to say there weren't some excellent albums this year, but the ratio is a lot poorer than usual. Of course this is all my opinion and I'd be glad to be proved wrong...

ohyeah, Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

um, plans by death cab for cutie? i can't fucking stand anything from that record

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I hate Death Cab with a fiery passion, but I think "Crooked Teeth" is an alright song from Plans.

Seconded from above: Tori Amos, Daft Punk, and Broken Social Scene--all sound entirely phoned-in.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 19 November 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

and I'd be glad to be proved wrong...

where to start

Rizz (Rizz), Saturday, 19 November 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

start with dark folk and industrial!

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 19 November 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I love the Minus the Bear album. Why don't you like it, Rizz? Have you listened to it more than once? I guess I'm old and out of touch but it sounds great to me except for one guitar solo.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 19 November 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

it sounds so boring, calculated, the singing is not my cup of tea either. i cant figure out how someone can enjoy it, an album full of blandness

ive listened to it 3 or 4 times and i'm gonna leave it at that i think ;-)

Rizz (Rizz), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Confucius say: man who disappointed by Broken Social Scene and Billy Corgan albums got low fucking expectations anyhow.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

but to put it all in perspective, i kinda like Plans. I realise it's boring as well but somehow it does something for me...all comes to down to feeeeeeling

Rizz (Rizz), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe how many people are saying Broken Social Scene! to me that's one of the most interesting albums i've heard this year.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Confucius say: man who think Broken Social Scene album one of the most interesting they heard all year not get out much.

Or listen to music much.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

i listen to music a lot, but probably not a wide variety. I like the way they took their sound from the last album but Vision Creation Newsun-ized it.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Vision Creation Newsun-ized it.

Blasphemer!!!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Rizz: fair enough. The feeling you get from Plans I don't get (I find them calculating to the point of being comedic), but I do get it from Menos el Oso, which to me only sounds calculated because of having to play over odd time signatures. To me they've done a great job with that album of making their proggy pretentions sound smooth and natural rather than forced like a band like Don Cabellero. I can't declare anything I've heard this year full-on bad, but the Metric album was disappointing. It was like they took all the bits I didn't like from Old World Underground... and made an album out of them. I've only listened to it 4 or 5 times, though, so maybe it'll grow on me.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

forgot about Weezer, yeah it doesn't get any worse for 2005.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I stand alone re: Weezer

The Cheese (johnny fever), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

G4.
Creep, Life on Mars, Everybody Hurts, even the Flower Duet from Madam Butterfly, all destroyed by them. Satans little helpers.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

I think yall forgetting Black Eyed Peas. Some asshole put that shit on at work this morning and I was dying. Tomorrow I will subject them to Ulver.

adam (adam), Sunday, 20 November 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

'Made In China' - Juliana Hatfield. And since 'In Exile Deo', the record preceding it, was one of her very best the disappointment is all the more painful.

coolrockboy, Sunday, 20 November 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

When people say "Good year for singles, bad for albums," in reality what in any fuck does that mean.

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 20 November 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I thought Made in China was surprisingly great considering how awful In Exile Deo was.

xp

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 20 November 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

I refuse to accept that Open Season was any kind of disappointment.

Who said it was?

Dom, I see where you're coming from there, but I reckon you're way off beam with The Rakes - they're 1000x more imaginative and interesting than the rest of your sorry bunch, and the album's ace imho.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 20 November 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

ps THE DANDY bloody WARHOLS - christ what a sorry fucking mess.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 20 November 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

what about the worst best ofs?

in the past few weeks on talksport i have heard adverts from the best of Dire Straits, also Bryan Adams and in today's Observer Music Monthly: "Alanis Morissette The Collection" advert.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 November 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

x post

Yeah, the Rakes album is one of those things that makes a virtue out of genre necessities. I don't wholeheartedly endorse it, but there's more good than bad on there.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 November 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Not say I agree with all these (in fact, I actually like one of the two albums that gets a D+), but this link definitely belongs here:

xhuxk, Monday, 21 November 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

A Bigger Bang was, for me, the worst album of the year because it was such a huge disappointment. Eight years since the last Stones album, but they don't sound like they care AT ALL.

Human After All was pretty bad, too, but at least that had "Technologic".

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 November 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom: I like my repetition to go somewhere further than a quarter-step, thanks.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 21 November 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

The acoustic Bright Eyes album is probably the least rewarding album that I actually expected anything from.

'Twan (miccio), Monday, 21 November 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Art Brut was probably the worst hyped and praised thing I heard this year. It manages to simultaneously sound tired in general and be irritating in fresh ways.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Monday, 21 November 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

How about some albums we might have heard about or given a shit about, thanks in advance!

Goldcrapp - Supernature (not bad alone, but a big disappointing turd)

"Human After All was pretty bad, too, but at least that had "Technologic"."

is that irony? that track was probebly the most awful thing on there.

Dude, you're arguing with a music section editor and your idea of a punchline is "Goldcrapp"

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 21 November 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

I was pretty convinced that nothing was gonna dip below the appalling Tommy Lee album in 2005, but I might just go with that band whose lyrics Whiney posted up there, despite not having heard a note of their music

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 November 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

The most unlistenable thing I heard all year was the Vibracathedral Orchestra album, but that was probably meant to be unlistenable.

> I refuse to accept that Open Season was any kind of disappointment.

Who said it was?

Alex in Montreal did:

There has been a lot of disappointments (British Sea Power, Blackalicious, Broken Social Scene)

I'm presuming he meant Open Season, anyway...

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I really tried to like this album, but I just can't get the same excitement I did with The Decline.... I felt that The Decline... was more like a sign of things to come and that Open Season was going to blow me away, cementing them as one of the best bands around and it ended up just kinda being meh. Chalk it up to unrealistic expectations...

It has been months though, so maybe I'll give it a spin now.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

It's really kind harmless, but Big Star In Space has to be mentioned.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

I found that I was initially a bit perplexed about Open Season--I found myself thinking of it as a step back rather than forward, but after repeated listens (over about a month) it really started to grow on me, in the beautiful way where you find yourself humming along even though you wouldn't say you really knew the songs...

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I am pretty sure I have probably never ever heard hardly any of the worst albums from 2005, or from any other year for that matter.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I like Open Season. It probably is a little too subdued for its own good, but it certainly doesn't belong on a list of the worst records of the year.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

oh no, i mentioned it as a disappointment, but stopped short of declaring it one of the worst albums of the year.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

i think the broken social scene album is great, it's hundreds of times more interesting than their other albums. it's all about textures. and it reminds me of disco inferno.

agreed that days of mars is fucking boring though. the whole thing seems disingenuous.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 21 November 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I have an interest in tracking down and playing these albums. People wanna feel hurt when I say they are mentioning obscure albums, fine. It is I who has taken it apon himself to track the fackin things down.

Because you are a "music sections editor" means your tastes are better than anothers?

Today's PFork would have you believe it's the DFA 1979 remix album, with a 0.5. Brutal review, sadly nowhere near as funny as the similarly overblown Daft Club writeup. I think maybe Nick Sylvester's parents were eaten by elephants, or Canadians, or something.

Bold prediction: For the first time ever in the history of ILM we will reach 100% censuses on a subject - on this very thread - on Dec 6, 2005 when Tom Green drops Prepare For Impact.

I love the Adam Green album, and one of my favourite things about it is how hateful it is.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Alright, so for the first time in months, I gave Open Season a fair spin... and I don't dislike it as much as I first did. Now that I got over my expectations, I'm kinda enjoying the subdued nature of the album. In fact, it flows pretty well together even though it's slightly lacklustre.

Has anyone heard the new Tom Green?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Monday, 12 December 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Adam Green's record owns this thread for the reasons mentioned above.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 12 December 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

A Bigger Bang was, for me, the worst album of the year because it was such a huge disappointment. Eight years since the last Stones album, but they don't sound like they care AT ALL.

How does this make A Bigger Bang any different from their last five albums?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 December 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

A Bigger Bang made my top 10, so nuts to all of you.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 12 December 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Tori Amos - The Beekeeper

Tori undersells herself by making music suitable for grocery stores. Lazy melodies, embarrasingly trite arrangements. And the unintentionally self-parodic lyrics and bad production values aren't helping much, either.

Turangalila (Salvador), Monday, 12 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Argh, embarrassingly, even.
