Wilco - Kicking Television

I know that Wilco is universally hated around here and to be honest I am not the biggest fan. However, the recently released live Kicking Television has been the first Wilco album that I am really enjoying. I was not a very big A Ghost Is Born fan but the songs really come alive in a live setting. Also the guitar work is stellar. Surprise of the year for me.

I for one, love Wilco. I don't understand all the hatred here either...maybe if they started playing grime people would enjoy it more.

With that said, I didn't like A Ghost Is Born, but Kicking Television is real good from what I've heard.

People on ILM hate Wilco? Not I.

Lots of Nils Shreddage on the first side and second to last song in particular.

I like Wilco, but don't like "A Ghost is Born" and think the live album is, like the current line-up, kind of boring. But I think I'm in the minority in the latter opinion. Not about the album, per se, but about the line-up, Nels Cline or not, who seems very restrained to my ears.

I like Wilco and I like A Ghost Is Born a lot.

I haven't been a fan since Summerteeth but I too liked this record.

Yeah, but what about "Kicking Television?" This isn't a thread on "A Ghost is Born," right?

I agree with Josh -- the most recent lineup is pretty dull, as is "Kicking Television" (and I like Wilco too). While I thought I'd miss Jay Bennett's power-pop guitar playing and over-orchestrations (and I kind of do), I actually blame Glenn Kotche, actually, who's just too studied and static a drummer for me. That approach suited the songs on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" a little better, where there was more texture, but when they strip things down like they do on "Ghost" and the live album he just really bores the hell out of me.

Also, Nels Cline's playing sounds totally tacked-on and inorganic to my ears. Epitome of "hired gun," even if he's playing noise.

eighteen years pass...

Having just seen That Episode of The Bear, Wilco deserve like 50% of the credit imo
