Promo experiences; a hypothetical situation which comes down to morality

Lets say you're about to interview a not very well known band/artist/act, pretty underground, their profits (if any) dont come from record sales but from playing live etc, you know the drill. Is it rude to ask for some of their records (because you love them so much) and say you'd like some cos you want to study the music first and it's really hard to get them where you are (and thats not a lie).

Can you just shamelessly ask for them or would you have to buy them?

Standard Practice, I would have said. It's up to them if they supply the records or tape copies.

Yeah, you're providing a service that could potentially generate sales. So a free copy of something for you is nothing really.

Absolutely ask. Most will be happy to oblige.

If only all questions of morality were this easy.

Yeah, my band doesn't make much money at all, but we're always happy to give away promo copies to anyone who could potentially help us get ahead, including pretty much all journalists/critics.
