What does everybody think of SSLYBY?

"Broom" is one of my favorite releases this year...

Tape Store (Tape Store), Sunday, 20 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

They're not really doing anything all that different... but its a really good little indie pop album.

Quinn (quinn), Sunday, 20 November 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

"House Fire" is very nice.

one year passes...

Uh, I've said this elsewhere, but their first EP is really brilliant...one of my favorites ever. It's also way better than Broom, in my opinion at least. It's more lo-fi/beautiful.

You can find all the tracks here.

Here's the tracklist:
1. Clod and the Pebble**
2. I Am Warm and Powerful (EP Version)**
3. Let's Get Tired
4. Oregon Girl (EP Version)
5. Accident**
6. You Could Write a Book**
7. We Can Win Missouri!
(8. and 9. Song W** and Song L)*

*only on later edition
**on my 'favorite songs ever' list

Uh, people who like effective lo-fi pop?

Shouldn't you start a Polaris thread about now?

I love "Glue Girls." And this new one has "You Could Write a Book." It will be much better than Broom.

whoa @ the XTC cover

also i think the next album will be incredible

Tape Store, Friday, 8 August 2008 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

don't mind this album (pershing), as much as the stupid band name puts me off

electricsound, Friday, 8 August 2008 06:11 (seventeen years ago)

i don't mind it either. but i'm kinda frustrated with the new "you could write a book."

Tape Store, Friday, 8 August 2008 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

The only song that stands out on Pershing is "Think I Wanna Die". I guess the rest is fairly inoffensive (in the less than complimentary sense of being completely bland and nondescript).

Jacobo Rock, Friday, 8 August 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

a lot of my students like them.

i CANNOT get past the name. it makes me feel very old; i get the feeling that they think the name is some kind of insider reference, sufficiently obscure to seem appealingly random. whereas for anyone my age or older, he's just a very very famous, disgraced former politician.

amateurist, Friday, 8 August 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

sorry i know this has nothing to do with their music which for all i know is quite fine. but sometimes yous gotta make decisions.

Corny indie band names, 2023:

I Made Out With Hugo Chavez
The Mrs. Nicolas Sarkozy Experience
A Perfect Day For Silvio Berlusconi

"Glue Girls" is really good, too. p.s. These guys are really nice--the nicest band i've ever met, actually:

"Honestly, we’re tired of our name. Today, there are a lot of indie bands with long names, and it just feels like we’re a part of that scene," SSLYBY co-singer-songwriter Philip Dickey said. "We get people who listen to us because of the name, but there are also people who hate us simply because of it."

You need to know about Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. I unfortunately missed their slot at the US Download Festival this year, but I was looking forward to probably hating them.

I sympathize, but I also can't see how they didn't see it coming, the saps.

"The House of Memory" is fucking great.

"alpha dog" (Tape Store), Friday, 21 November 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

This is how i want them to sound, back to the original ep...acoustic, cool hooks, interesting percussion, super intimate, lo-fi aesthetic

"alpha dog" (Tape Store), Friday, 21 November 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

p.s. it's on the hype machine

"alpha dog" (Tape Store), Friday, 21 November 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

lastly, philip is the greatest drummer in indie rock, ok

this is an extended, electric version of the last song from the first ep (the one i call 'my favorite ep ever'). it's awesome.
