(also maybe or maybe not backbone, bad company [the drum'n'bass one], issa bagayoyo, basehead, big flame, book of love, bottle rockets, brazen hussies, b-rock and the bizz, carlinhos brown)

(jazz and experimental type guys who might get mentioned all the time but i wouldn't know since i hardly ever read the those threads, or maybe they don't: tim berne, bernocchi.budd, jim black, bright, peter brotzmann tentet, les brown, dave burrell full blown trio, kenny burrell, warren burt, by the end of tonight)

bomfunk mcs

"Freestyler" needs a Stakka Bo style reappraisal.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

my brother, got a Junior Brown CD for the holidays once on the sort of "you play guitar, so does this guy, you'll probably like it" pretense while he was on the middle of a punk phase. Think it's still collecting dust in our parents' basement. "I Hung it Up" is OK, I guess.

Is it the Bomfunk MCs that did that song "Freestyler"?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

dave burrell full blown trio

i know nothing of the full blown trio, but when i was first exploring jazz, courtesy of my college radio station library, i fell in love with dave burrell's high won high two, largely because of one song that sort of reminded me of the "peanuts" theme music.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Ken Boothe as in the rocksteady singer famous for covering Bread's "Everything I Own"?

Is it just me or is he positively MASSIVE compared with everyone else on that list?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Probably not just you (though a couple of the jazz guys might come close, and though I never knew that's why he's famous. I thought he was famous for getting mentioned in a Clash song. But then I don't come from England.)

(What IS "UK pop reggae", anyway? Was it an actual genre there, then?)

I left Moe Bandy & Joe Stampley off the list by mistake, I just realized.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Brain Surgeons - the Albert Bouchard band?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

yep, and the Deborah Frost band, too!

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Black Tape For A Blue Girl - U.S. goth. A bit like Dead Can Dance meets late period Swans, but not as good as either.

Plenty of love from me for Dave Burrell, Peter Brotzmann and Jim Black.

Are Born Again named after the Sabbath album, or just christians?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Brotzmann Tentet sounded tired and played out in Victoriaville this year, but the original 3CD release on Okkadisk (1998) is out of this world good.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Brazen Hussies, aren't they dave q's band?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

brazen hussies: yep (i've got a cd-r)

born again: nope on the sabbath and probably the christianity, seeing as how it was recorded mostly in 1969-72

black tape for a blue girl: good description, but possibly better than dead can dance OR the swans (since they'd both improve with a little bit more of each other).

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

Junior Brown sucks and I'm embarassed to live in the same town with him. He's a totally insufferable douche.

I like Bloque, though, quite a bit.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Funny, I was playing Boom Boom Satellites' one US album just last week, and marvelling at the depth of its grooves and the density of its textures. Jazzy without making the term seem pejorative.

Bang Tango fairly suck, though.

J.D. Considine, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

I've been meaning to buy some Bang Tango if I see it somewhere for cheap.

I saw the Brain Surgeons the other night. Frost threw a fit or two, Bouchard had a plethora of cymbals, it was fun.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I tried to download that B-Rock "babydaddy" track on limewire but couldn't find it. And I know Basehead's gotten love on ilx before, I'm sure of it.

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Boulder did an album, Reaped in Half, that sounded like Ted Nugent and with album cover emulating Hipgnosis. Never heard the one before that and they were subject of a picture disk by an NYC label who tried to make me apply for promos if I'd do a review upfront. Not the only people who've done that, but nice try. Work harder at cutting your own throat next time.

Blood Duster: Aussie grindcore band with a trenchant sense of humor, an actually grooving drummer and an ability to recognize the need for hooks and good riffs all in the same song.

Blood-Drained Cows: ex-Angry Samoan Gregg Turner's band. Still haven't heard them.

George the Animal Steele, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

Tim Berne has the distinction of being the artist I own the most LPs by that I've never played. I've bought at least two (maybe three) because I was had read something about him and they were cheap, but never got in the mood to play them. This stretches back over ten years, but since I'm taking this week off maybe I'll try to find one of them and see what it's like.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Kenny Burrell 4 life!
Chitlins Con Carne etc.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

I've yet to hear a Carlinhos Brown solo album that I liked all the way through. I think the closest was the "E Carito Marron" album. All of htem have some good stuff though, and he's a marvelous guest musician, and was terrific on the "Tribalistas" supergroup album.

Aren't they some Japanese techno duo? Why do I think that... Must be thinking of something else. Hmmm.

Ken Boothe The Studio One cat? Heard some real nice tracks by him, if so.

BeanfieldJazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzanova style, if I remember right.

Mestema (davidcorp), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Ken Boothe's hardly obscure is he?

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Basehead get much, much love for Play with Toys, still a great album after 13-odd years. Never tracked down their later stuff tho, I heard they lost their charm fast. Big Flame remind me of listening to John Peel at 16 and I've still got a lot of time for that sound - somewhere between the Minutemen and Beefheart but not as self-consciusly weird as Stump. The Bomfunk single is classic, obviously. I seem to recall liking the D'n'B Bad Company but I can't remember anything about 'em now. Ken Boothe is fine.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Ken Boothe's chart career:

Everything I Own (#1, Sep 1974)
Crying Over You (#11, Dec 1974)

Only two hits but one of them was a Number One!

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Beakers - Seattle arty brittle funkpunk recently reissued on K; they were one of the highlights of the "Seattle Syndrome" compilation besides the Fartz, the Fastbacks, and Body Falling Downstairs. Oh, and ...

Blackouts - Industrialish, also reissued on K. Released records on Situation Two and Wax Trax!; some of them played in Ministry.

Tony Bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

yay - bango! i'm assuming we're talking the funky brazilian psych band, right?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Which Babasonicos is it?
I love Trance Zomba even if people and critics feels like Jessico, Infame and the very recent Anoche are their best works to date. I find lovely the naive experimental way in which Trance Zomba works.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Ken Boothe's chart career in the United States:

-----------------
(Want to hear it again?)

The Babsonicos CD I have is *Jessico,* with the cactus on the cover.

And yep, that Bango.

As for Bang Tango, Anthony, start with *Dancin On Coals*, a way better album than their most obvious influences Billy Idol or the Cult ever made. If you like that, you might also want to check out the two albums by Joe Leste's excellent new band Beautiful Creatures. (Though JD shouldn't, if he hates Bang Tango as much as he says.)

I should have included T. Graham Brown on the list. He's amazing.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

I forgot that the United States is the only place that matters, sorry!

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Which 'Basehead' do you have? I think there are 2 artists with that name. (Memory is fuzzy, but I think one had to go by 'Basehead UK' or something...)

Book of Love get lots of love from me! "I Touch Roses" is an 80s classic.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

>I forgot that the United States is the only place that matters, sorry! <

Nah, I just mean he's not anything like a household name here. In the States, rightly or wrongly (wrongly, actually), Ken Boothe IS pretty obscure. Being famous in England doesn't make you famous everywhere!

The Basehead on my shelf is *Play With Toys,* by the art-rap guy. (I have another CD by him in storage somewhere, I think -- the green one, with s&m devices on the cover, whatever the heck it's called).

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Well he's more famous in Jamaica than he is England!

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Good point. (But he still doesn't get talked about on ILM enough.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I did a Search on him, he has one thread to himself and is mentioned in 36 others (not including this one), which isn't bad really

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

The Babsonicos CD I have is *Jessico,* with the cactus on the cover.

A *fantastic* album, I should note. Great stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

And Black Tape for a Blue Girl are all right by me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Birthday Massacre could use some more great songs (couldn't we all?), but they sound fantastic and are cute.

Junior Brown's "Highway Patrol" and Bottle Rockets' "Radar Gun" would make a great split single!
