Anything good going on in our local music scene? I haven't been out of the house in a few weeks. What local bands are gonna get the next national attention?

I am not a fan at all, but I'm pissed the Olympic Hopefulls hadta change their name. Grrr, let em be!

What shows coming up are you excited about?

fuck, adult cancelled!

geoff (gcannon), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

god fucking save us from the vast majority of local music! I'm really ashamed that some of the worst shit in the world comes from here right now.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else seen some really crusty looking guys on the bus (route 3 I've seen them a couple of times) acting wild and shouting "G-g-g-GOON SQUAD!"? I swear those guys are always on, which is kind've frightening after awhile! but they seem like a lot of fun though and the couple times I've heard they really rap well. I couldn't find anything about them online, unless they're come up from Chicago, which sounds likely actually.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah, fucking bands here suck. atmosphere is awful. most hip-hop from here is. the only bands i really think are worth looking into are the STNNNG, the Blind Shake, and the Deaf, maybe a few others

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Though I like them live more than on CD...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Ha, my brother calls that "The Soul Asylum Effect", Pete.

Dan (More Websites Plz) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I enjoy Vicious Vicious, Spaghetti Western String Co., the Owls, the Deaths, P.O.S., Kill the Vultures, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, the Hopefuls, etc.

Also, I was heartened to go to an 18+ show at First Ave last Tuesday and be given a (gasp!) wristband that signified my advanced age and consequential entitlement to purchase and consume alcohol on the lower level of the mainroom. That, if nothing else, bodes well for the local music scene.

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

....thx for mentioning maps of norway pete, we're getting pretty okay.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

All the bands people mentioned on here are cool. STNNNG is amazing.

For Cows fans,

Please note that Seawhores features Freddy Votel from the Cows, who is a fucking monster drummer. Stoner/noise/assault of yr ears.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

The Knotwells
Huge Rat Attacks
Plastic Constellations
Tough Phantomz
Styrofoam Duck
The Blackthorns
The Vets

mason r butler, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

stnnng pown. every city should have a band like that.

geoff (gcannon), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Happy Apple, Fat Kid Wednesdays, Dr. Mambo's Combo (Monday nights at Bunker's!). I want to check out Zebulon Pike, too.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Well, almost everything I was going to mention is already here, but I will second Malachi Constant, Maps Of Norway (hi matt.), Blind Shake, Heads and Bodies, Cecil Otter, Dessa, Signal To Trust, Haunted House, Brother and Sister, more as I think about it.

The only unmentioned ones I can think of is Sant Elia (new - also somewhat biased because it's my roommates band) and my biggest recent push - The Goddamn Doo-Wop Band. Who are, in fact, a female fronted non-ironic all-original Doo-Wop band.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 24 November 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Phblt. Brother Ali could snap STNNNNNNNNNNNNG's collective necks just by lookin' at 'em.

disco violence (disco violence), Thursday, 24 November 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I forgot the Knotwells!

http://www.knotwells.com/

Weird, but according to their show history, I saw their third show out of 91 gigs, which makes sense, but man does time fly...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

my biggest recent push - The Goddamn Doo-Wop Band. Who are, in fact, a female fronted non-ironic all-original Doo-Wop band.

woah! where do they play??

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Michael Yonkers is almost done playing out live...he's playing a show at the Varsity Theater soon, you should see him if you get a chance.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Anything cool going on the weekend of the 9th? I'll be in town for a couple of gigs.

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Nice. I've been meaning to check out that Mint Condition album, actually.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

A little suprised not to see Belles of Skin City and STNNNG make that list, Pete...I see the STNNNG made live acts, which is good, I can't imagine there's that many acts in town better than them live....still lots of stuff I should check out on there. thx.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't nuts about the Belles album, and I say this as somebody who feels the singer's last band, Kentucky Gag Order, should have gotten way more hype than it did. I still play that album...

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

old fashioned sass for the peacock and the voyeur is one of the better records to come out of mpls for the last few years, IMO....great band...too bad they self-dectructed so quickly.

the belles record was harder to get into for me, but now i love it....it's so claustrophobic and hyper controlled....in a good way

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Exactamundo!!
Thank you for "getting it". The conscious decision to release a smart-ass statement e.p. was something we realized might be percieved as an ill-advised choice- but when trying to establish a more rooted & lasting fan-base, we felt it natural to reach out through more "intimate" means...such as releasing an "not easily accessable" recording. By no means is it zorn-like or any of an assortment o' noise/avant garde approaches; but in it's seemingly monotonous subtlety- we share a shit-eating grin with those who listen carefully.

The full-length (which is slated for a march release, and possibly titled "you do the company proud") will most definitely be less a statement & more a full overview of a group that enjoys being around each other AND the willing listeners! Cheers, Matt; and Happy New Year!!!!

asking for a friend -- anyone have reccs for decent (maybe indie-rock leaning) Minnesota bands who could play a wedding?

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

someone has to suggest Gay Witch Abortion, right?

chartres (goole), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

that would be perfect. they're a methodist-leaning group, right?

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

Lutheran would be good, too iirc

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

do you want someone playing originals, or?

i can suggest a trad jazz band but that's about it

an american hippie in israel (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

this friend actually wants a band for a post-wedding kinda party, so it wouldn't necessarily have to be like a "wedding band" ... she was actually trying to book Built To Spill at one point, but it was (obviously) too much $$$, so she wanted to see if there were local-ish bands that might be good.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

Is Limited Warranty still around? They'll play anything.

living like the Na'vi will never happen (HI DERE), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

If you mean a dance/party band, Trailer Trash are great (though honky-tonk), and I've seen both Accident Clearinghouse (also country/Americana) and the ELO tribute band ELNo play for friends' weddings or wedding-related parties. If Jordan means Jack Brass Band, that's an idea, an energetic NOLA-style brass party. The Owls played my wedding, but just the ceremony.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

Dude, do your friend a favor and skip the indie rock leaning wedding B.S., your problem was just solved: ELO tribute band! Don't bring me down, buddy. ELNo all the way.

grandavis, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

i was thinking of the south side aces

hey mpls ilxers that know ppl in bands---

i had a hare-brained idea on the way home from clinic today about a possible fundraiser for MSF/PIH/Red Cross/Haiti. kinda lol Live Aid but fuck you if u disagree. anyway, i don't know shit about shit when it comes to local music (thx med school), but surely there are interested musical acts/venues that could draw a decent enough crowd (and play for free) that money could be raised from otherwise dissolute hipsters who just want to party

gf's new kitty got loose but actually found her way back home the day before the storm. if she'd been missing another 24 hrs or more, as cats are wont to do, man it woulda been worry city. well i mean more so.

a friend was over last night during the storm and got a call from her parents in...good thunder or wherever...saying this 2000 lb wood bridge over the pond near their place went just floating away, and all their fences and power lines went down, etc. dude at work today showed me iphone pics of a manhole that shot up in the air (this can happen????). or i mean the water that was gushing outta the street, post-manhole-shoot. shit got scary, i had no idea it any of this was coming.

so we're supposed to have more fun tonight?

Gov. Tim Pawlenty spent Friday assessing the damage from the nearly “unprecedented number” of tornadoes but extolling the “can-do attitude” of Minnesotans putting their lives back together.

well like what are they gonna do, not put their lives back together
