I just found New Britain on Limewire a couple months back.

Yes, rubbish isn't it?

Honestly, it's worth owning one Whitehouse album. It'll fill that occasional urge for stuff that sounds like Whitehouse.

And when you need more, go buy the new Prurient album on Load, which is awesome.

If I want to hear something that sounds like whitehouse, I can tune the radio between 2 channels, turn it up really loud and shout over the top of it.

I've owned a few more than one in my time - nothing to write home about for the most part (xpost)

But you never do, do you?

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

No! I think if I were to do that, and shout "I'M COMING UP YOUR ASS" at home, I'd probably find myself single again that very week!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

... like every Whitehouse fan on the planet

Did you ever read that big nurse with wound feature in audion magazine where Steven S describes going to a vegas years era whitehouse concert? He gets behind the desk and starts turning up the faders, and people start getting pissed off because it's too noisy (!), so he leaves in disgust, and the last thing he sees as he leaves is them having a spanking competition on stage? Ha ha ha ha ha.

william bennett's other 'occupation':

If... you're the kind of person who has a strong interest in an opportunity to improve ALL TYPES of relationships, then you DON'T HAVE TO SAY PLEASE, GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, so in real life, William Bennett's a kind of Derren Brown for complete saddoes and neurotics? Figures I suppose.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Wow. What a sales pitch. I agree with Dadaismus (xpost).

I used to have that live record cause Glenn Wallis was on it. It's long sold and gone. Don't think I have any actual records anymore except for their charming "My Cock's On Fire" track on the "Ohrenshcrauben" comp LP which Bennett apparently has some issue with, he blocked me from selling the thing on eBay.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

i think their early records are occasionally interesting tripe but the last two albums had some genuinely fantastic moments (i LOVE wriggle like a fucking eel) and they were easily one of the greatest live shows i've ever seen.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

"early" = everything up to the last two albums

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

You know, I did rather like that 'Daddo" song from a recent record, maybe Birdseed. A lot more complexity in the sound, it seemed.

I had this idea some time ago for another ILX script - perhaps the Bennet-as-relationships-counsellor will give it some more juice...

(Scene: Morning, somewhere in England. The camera flies over tiled roofs and through the small window of an anonymous bathroom, where we see a blond man shaving.)
Voiceover: It’s morning in Islington. Like many denizens of this typical suburban English town, William Bennet is preparing for work. But this is no ordinary kind of job for which he’s preparing. For William Bennet is a member of the controversial English noise band, Whitehouse.

(Suddenly Bennet cuts himself on the cheek)

Bennet (to his razor): S**T! YOU B***, YOU FILTHY, COMMON B***!!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING???? AAAAAARGGGH!!!!! I DESPISE YOU! I DESPISE YOU AND YOUR KIND!!!!

The Steven Stapleton & William Bennett collaboration 150 Murderous Passions is good. Whitehouse's problem is too much testosterone, basically.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

This is absolutely fascinating - I particularly like this bit:

* SPECIAL RA MAKE-OVER PACKAGE

Introductory price: £60. This includes two hours' personal training with William Benedict (this will often be conducted on location in order to get instant feedback on progress and direct application of the techniques and skills) and an hour's fashion consultation with dressmaker and designer Florence de Taille. Isn't it rare to get genuinely honest feedback about how you can look your absolute best?

I just love the image of Bennett, wearing burgundy bodywarmer and round sunglasses, mic lead stretched taught across his chest, screaming at you in your own house for two hours, followed by a French lady telling you your clothes are shit and that you should buy a burgundy bodywarmer and take your shirt off in public more often.

Seriously though, if I still lived in Edinburgh, I would definitely go along to one of these just for the experience. How did you uncover this, Andrew?

haha i totally lifted it from a dissensus thread abt whitehouse!

Fair enough! I'm obviously not the fanboy I used to be (this is a good thing, obv.)

I note that the susan lawly site linked to above has a discussion forum, and that the discussion forum has a google ads panel. the mind boggles as to what will turn up in it in time.

Funnily enough I was playing this a couple of weeks ago. My verdict: load of old pony.

I'm right naive me but what exactly is a string bikini (see article above)?

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

NOT WORK SAFE!!!!!

It doesn't look very comfortable, I must admit. (or very rowr either, tbh)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)
