Dreaming music

Last night I dreamt a whole album. It was a collaboration between SFA, Will Young and Mark Hollis and it was absolutely fantastical. The dream was almost lucid and I had very detailed aural hallucinations in it of the individual songs. Sadly, of course, this record does not actually exist, nor ever will.

This is not the first time I have dreamt of fantastical music that does not exist.

I've dreamed a Smiths a-side which doesn't exist, and a Boo Radleys a-side which does. Good ol' pen and paper by the bed.

I wish I had a dream recorder.

I once dreamt I traveled back in time to see the original incarnation of the Velvet Underground at someone's house party. They sounded a lot like the Cramps and someone next to me kept telling me to "check out this band called the Gun Club," who sounded just like them. I wanted to leave because the show wasn't very good, when I woke up.

I dreamt that the Fall were hiding in my shower once. Everyone involved was fully clothed, thankfully.

six years pass...

There was a more recently active thread like this somewhere around here, but I can't find it. Anyway, I had a dream I was watching a music video and it was some sort of 70s R&B, but now that I think about it, it was pretty unique. The song had lots of distinct phases to it. I may have invented a new genre in my sleep, but it's all pretty vague now.

I also had a dream about watching Skrillex and thinking I was really starting to like him, but the music didn't sound like real life Skrillex. Hard to say what it sounded like though, it was just pretty brief.

three weeks pass...

I had a dream about a song with the lyrics that said something to the effect of: because I feel like you and I are the same person, I have to look at a photo of you to remind me that you are not me and you can say you don't want me. But expressed more snappily than that. It sounded a bit like Hospitality, who I was listening to last night. I forgot exactly how the music went almost as soon as I woke up, but the lyrical content was odd enough that it stuck with me.

I posted this in the Fleetwood Mac poll results thread, but I had a doozy the other week: "Last night, I had a dream in which I was at a very small coffeeshop, and sitting on stage playing solo (yet with full-band sound) was Sir Phil Collins. He played a few of his hits, but I remember him playing a particular song that I thought was undeniably his best one (and I thought of it in explicitly that ILM-poll sense of "oh yeah, this is the one I'm voting for"). The thing was, it wasn't an actual Phil Collins song. My sleeping brain was somehow composing my Platonic ideal of a Phil Collins song and he was right there performing it for me and maybe 25 other people."

I dreamed the best Beach Boys song ever written not too long ago. I wanted to write it all down when I woke up, but by the time I got to scoring the oboe part, I had forgotten how the tune went
