And any other good covers of this one?

I don't know if I'd nominate Jim Belushi croaking this in Wild Palms as 'good' exactly ...

Okay, dorky sci-fi reference, sorry.

Christopher Walken in The Deer Hunter. Arms flung wide, belting out "I LOVE YOU BABY!!" Pretty damn great.

unbelievable classic.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

I just heard a cover of this the other day, but I can't remember who performed it. I just remember being disappointed because they didn't rock the horn part that comes right before the chorus in the original. It's that duh-DUM, duh-DUM, duh-duh-DUM-dee-DUM that just makes this song.

Also, mark this song down for me as one of those classic oldies that I didn't know the name of until I was in my thirties. "Can't Take My Eys Off You" would've been Number Three on my list of possible titles, coming in behind "I Love You, Baby" and "You're Just Too Good to Be True".

It's a shame maybe, but I hate this song, dunno why...

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I can imagine somebody not liking this song - I used to hate most of those 1968-style rock-songs-with-Vegas-horns myself, just on principle - but I think it's just great, myself. That chorus is so jubilant/schmaltzy. Was that the first hit in which Valli started laying off on the falsetto? Every time his name comes up on ILM I mentally chastise myself for not owning a good Four Seasons comp. (Or even a bad one for that matter.)

Is it a false memory of mine, or did Leonard Nimoy (or some other "Golden Throat"-type singer) cover this song?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Fucking Hell, C'MON!!!! Andy Williams? Lauryn Hill?, What about The Boystown Gang - fabulous gay disco version featuring two of the most wooden dancers in the history of popular music. Pure Gold!

Gordon King, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Lauryn Hill. That's the cover I heard that was pretty flat.

three years pass...

Can anybody watch this and not feel a small shiver of anticipation at the chorus?
